Chapter 507 Chapter 507
She looked at him, he tilted his head and then searched her face. When he put his hand on her shoulder it felt like he was projecting calm to her. Her animal responded to it right away.
“Your cat has mine trying to claw its way out to kill whatever has upset you.”
Amari’s eyes widened and she looked at the phone.
“I muted us for a second.”
She blew out a breath and nodded. “I’m just,” she shook her head, “this is trash, this whole situation, Tripp…”
“I know.” He ducked his head down so they were face to face, “listen, we’re going to see this through,” he motioned to the door a few feet from them, “then we’ll track some more and take them down, regardless of who they are.” He put his hand over his heart, “I swear.”
Amari sucked in a shaky breath and then blew it out and nodded, “yeah. I’ll cut them into tiny bite-size pieces.”
He smirked, “atta girl. Focus it on the end result.” He gave her a quick nod while searching her face to see if she was all right and held up the phone.
“I just need…”
He gave her a heated look, “we have company, or I’d oblige you with what would help settle you down. You can go for a run at dusk.” He winked at her and then held his finger over the phone.
Amari’s insides heated and she gave him a look, so he’d start the call again. As far as shutting her up, that worked. Now all she wanted to do was climb him and wrap her legs around him. She still wanted to stab people, just not as much.
“We’re back,” Tripp said while keeping his gaze on her.
“Anyone injured?” Kenzo asked.
“Not yet.” She said and then rolled her head from side to side to try to keep a handle on her temper.
“I was saying,” Nate said, “we need to check on the security team’s families somehow and narrow down who it could be.”
“I’ll mention that to Dad when I talk to him,” Devin said.
“This is bullshit guys,” she said with a lot less hostility in her voice, “are we supposed to start watching everyone we work with?”
“The teams that are out, we can trust,” Jesse told her, “If we couldn’t half the ops would have failed.”
Amari glanced to see Tripp still watching her, he nodded agreeing with her boss. “Just make sure all of them are in the loop, Jesse, no one goes anywhere alone and unarmed,” she shook her head, “I even would have waited for my partner if I’d known they could follow us like that.”
Jesse snorted, “I somehow doubt that. You would have just driven with a gun in your hand.”
She smirked and then shrugged, “maybe.”
“She’s in good hands now, Jesse,” Kenzo said, “Tripp will be her shadow.”
Amari glanced at him again and he winked. Did he have to be so freaking sexy and appealing? She put her hand up and touched the bite on her neck, his eyes tracked her movement, she might even miss this when it was gone after she went for a run.
“I think they’re just lucky only a couple of them ended up dead,” Tripp said, sending her another heated look.
Amari had to force herself to look away from him, “just make sure the girls are carrying their tasers, Jesse.”
Tripp raised an eyebrow at her.
“I’ll pass it along.”
“Are there any other shitstorms you want to share with us, Tripp?” Blair didn’t sound amused.
Tripp shook his head, “that’s it until we meet up with the one that thinks he’s picking up his little Alpha female.”
“I’d prefer him alive,” Devin said, “there’s no way anyone from the top is going to come to retrieve their new prize, so we need information from them.”
Tripp gave her a questioning look, she shrugged, “we’ll do everything possible to make sure they’re still breathing.”
Someone snorted and Amari wasn’t sure who it was.
“Breathing and able to speak, if at all possible.” Kenzo’s clarified.
“Got it,” Amari said, then looked at Tripp and rolled her eyes.
“We’ll be there before morning,” Asher said, “instead of stopping to rest, we’re going to go straight through, he’s going to be a hot commodity by tomorrow.”
“I will give Raymond a heads up and make sure he keeps his arrival off the record.” Devin didn’t sound impressed. “I need to go, keep me up to date.”
Amari paced away and played in the slush as the others left the call one after the other.
“Amari?”
She turned at Jesse’s voice, “yeah?”
“I know you’re used to doing your own thing, but until we have the ones that tried to purchase you in custody, please,” he sighed, “please try to follow Tripp’s lead.”
She looked at Tripp to see he wasn’t grinning or even close to it, points for him. “I’ll behave, boss.” She raised her hand in the air, “promise.”
Jesse laughed softly, “I doubt that. Just get back to us in one piece, okay?”
“You know it.” She smiled at the phone. Jesse and the co-ord team felt more like family than her family.
“Asher has a phone for you, message me after you get a location.”
Amari nodded, “I will.” She waited and he said nothing more.
“Tripp?”
Tripp jerked his head and looked at the phone at his team leader’s voice. “Yeah.”
“You two good?”
Tripp glanced at her and then nodded, “we’re good.”
“Focus and get that son of a bitch tomorrow.”
“You got it, boss.”
The line went quiet.
Blowing out a breath, she nodded her head slowly. She felt better on most levels. The girls on her team were safe, that was a relief. Now, if she could just figure out why her cat’s emotions were all over the place, she’d be able to focus on getting this done. Probably because she hadn’t killed anything in a few days. After what they went through, that might be it.
