Darren's POV chapter 34

The fight lasted, I must commend, the beings who attacked me were skilled, but not as skilled as me. I reached out for their throat, ripping out their lungs with a satisfying grin. Weirdly, they turned to dust.

It wasn’t a natural death if I must say, and it wasn’t something that could be explained away by simple logic.

Witches? Dark magic? I didn’t have enough information to make a call, but one thing was very very clear to myself. Heather was the target and I am not sure if they'd stop anytime soon.

I hell knew Sabrina was back, this was just a warning sign.  I couldn't help but wonder why Heather was her prime target. First, the  picture on the wall, now she's been physically attacked.

Her lips quivered, her body trembling as if she just saw the grim reaper. Well, for someone who wasn't used to seeing something supernatural, I think this was a little bit scary. Seeing her tremble strengthened my resolve to protect her.

I turned to her, noticing the way her emerald-green eyes gazed around nervously, searching for some place of safety. Without a second thought, I grabbed her wrist and pulled her into my arms, with my heart also racing. She fit so perfectly in my chest as if she was on my bed. My wolf stirred, pacing anxiously, but the feel of her steady heartbeat against me calmed us both.

“It’s over,” I murmured softly, though I wasn’t sure I believed it myself.

Heather’s hands clutched my shirt, her knuckles white from the grip. Her voice, barely above a whisper, broke the silence that was alive between we both.

“Who were they?”

“I don’t know,” I admitted, my fingers instinctively running through her soft hair, in a romantic manner. “But I’ll find out. You’re safe now just believe that.”

Her body trembled against mine, her fear alive. My wolf growled low, not in anger but in deep frustration. Whoever these bastards were, they’d made a fatal mistake coming after her. I would hunt them down and make them pay for putting her in danger.

When she finally steadied herself and made fear leave her, I pulled back and parted her face gently.

“Stay here with me,” I ordered, my tone leaving no room for argument.

She nodded, too scared to protest with my own words, and I turned away, pulling out my phone. Kyle answered on the second ring.

“Darren?” His voice was sharp, laced with concern.

“We’ve been attacked,” I said flatly, with my eyes scanning the whole area. “Three men. They turned to dust right in front of me.”

“Witches?” he guessed immediately as I said my words.

“Could be, not really sure,” I replied, glancing back at Heather. “But they were after her specifically from what I saw.”

Kyle let out a low curse from his own end. “I'll get there now,”

“I’m already ahead of you on that. Make sure everything’s ready when we arrive.”

“You got it.”

I ended the call and turned back to Heather. She was still standing in the same spot as before, hugging herself tightly, as fear was written all over her face.

“We’re leaving,” I announced, moving toward her.

Her eyes widened slightly. “Leaving? Where?”

“Home,” I said simply.

Her lips parted in surprise of my words, but she quickly nodded to that. There was no fight left in her, not yet.

We got home and I packed the bags, Heather was close. I didn't let her out of my sight.

“They attacked her?” Kyle asked, walking into the room. He stole a glance at Heather before returning his gaze to me.

“Yup,” I replied.

He traced his steps over to her, his eyes scanning her body I felt a little bit annoyed watching him get close to Heather.

“You weren't hurt,” Kyle noted.

“Yeah, I came just right on time to save her ass,” I smirked feeling a little proud of myself.

“Nice,” he mumbled.

I leaned against the wall, my gaze darting between Kyle and Heather. Heather looked completely lost, her eyes fixated on the wall as if it held her interest.

“I keep telling you that Sabrina was back and you think I'm kidding?” I asked, rolling my eyeballs.

“I trust you,” he replied. His voice lacked the conviction that i needed.deep down, he must be thinking that I was insane or probably just making it up.

“You don't, Kyle. Just come out plain!” I said, my tone harsher than I intended. Heather flinched, my high voice pulled her out of her haze but I didn't care.

He scoffed, crossing his arms,

“Sabrina is really powerful and i doubt the Luna goddess would give her another chance.”

“So?” I asked, my eyes blazing with fury. “Do you have an explanation for the attacks? The death of our house help?” I asked, my lips folding into thin firm lines.

A sigh escaped his lips,

“I don't. I'm off to the pack, you can join later,” he replied, walking out of the room.

My gaze shifted to Heather, she had been observing us for a while. My lips parted and I exhaled slowly, trying to calm my temper.

“  You are staying with me tonight,” I said, my voice leaving no room for argument.

Her brow furrowed slightly,

“I don't like the idea,” she replied.

My thoughts drifted far from me, searching for the last time I asked for her opinion. The last time I checked, I didn't give a fuck about her opinion.

“You don't get to choose, Heather. Once I speak, you obey!” I yelled, anger brewing to the surface.

Her face grew pale and i regretted raising my voice.

A sigh escaped my lips.

Now, I look like the Villian.

“you’ll stay here, where I can keep you safe and atleast monitor you,“ I  explained, my voice soft.

Her jaw tightened as if she wanted to argue at my own words, but she didn’t get the chance she wanted to do so. My hands moved slowly, parting her face.

Her skin was warm beneath my fingers, her lips slightly parted in surprise. For a moment, I hesitated, but my wolf had other ideas.

I kissed her.

The moment our lips met, something ignited between us both which i immediately felt.

It wasn’t gentle or hesitant this time it was raw, a collision of need and possession. Heather melted into me, her hands tangling in my hair as she kissed me back with equal fervor. My wolf growled in satisfaction, the taste of her lips fueling something within me.

When I finally pulled away, she was breathless, her cheeks flushed at those kiss. I brushed my thumb over her swollen lips, unable to stop myself from grinning at the sight of her.

“Get some rest,” I murmured.

She nodded, her voice soft. “Okay.”

The next morning, the scent of coffee and eggs wafted through the air, making my stomach growl. Heather trudged down the stairs, her shoulders shrugged. She sat across the dining table, her gaze fixed on the dining table, she didn't want to look at me.  Her gaze lingered on the ceramic plate before her, her fingers crawling across e dining table, reaching for her fork.

The kiss had changed something since last night. I could just feel it in the air between us, though neither of us had brought it up. My wolf was totally restless, eager to close the distance between us again, but I kept myself in check. There were bigger issues at hand than just sex and kisses.

“We’re going to the pack today,” I said, breaking the tense silence.

Heather froze, her fork hanging mid-air. “What?”

“You’ll be safer there than anywhere else,” I explained, leaning back in my chair at once. “Kyle and the others are already preparing for your arrival.”

Her brow furrowed, her voice quiet but totally firm. “I don’t want to go there."

I leaned forward, resting my forearms on the table with my eyes brown furrowed.

“You don’t have a choice, Heather. Whoever came after you last night isn’t done and won't just give up on that. Until I know who they are and what they want, you’ll stay where I can protect you.”

Her lips pressed into a thin line, her frustration evident, but she didn’t argue further with me or tried to say another word.

Good. She was starting to understand what I meant.

My wolf growled softly in approval also. She was mine to protect at this point of my life, mine to keep safe around. And if anyone dared to come after her again, I would make sure they never lived to regret it.

The drive to the pack territory was tense but quiet. Heather stared out the window, her arms crossed protectively over her chest, with her thought totally visible in her facial expression. I could tell she wasn’t happy about being dragged into my own world, but it wasn’t her decision to make.

Does she need to be reminded daily that I spent a fortune on her head?

When we arrived, Kyle was waiting outside the mansion, his sharp blue eyes scanning the surroundings. He had gone to the pack before me. Taken a night bus back to the pack, just to prepare for my arrival. He gave me a nod before turning his attention to Heather.

“ We meet again,,,” he teased.

Heather glanced at me, keeping her straight poker face.

“She’ll be staying in my quarters,” I informed Kyle, cutting off any potential protests.

Kyle’s brows lifted slightly, but he didn’t comment. Instead, he turned back to Heather. “You’ll be safer here. Darren and the rest of us will make sure of it.”

Heather didn’t respond to those words, but I could see the unease in her posture and her face. She wasn’t used to relying on others for protection and it was visible, but she would have to learn.

As we entered the mansion, I placed a hand on the small of her back, guiding her into the mansion. My wolf purred at the contact, satisfied that she was here, where she belonged and where she should have always being.

“This will be your home for now,” I told her as I opened the door to my quarters.

She stepped inside hesitantly, her gaze sweeping over the room. It was spacious but not overly adorned, with dark wood furniture and large windows that let in plenty of natural light.

“It’s… nice,” she said softly, her voice laced with uncertainty.

I closed the door behind us, stepping closer to her. “You don’t need to worry anymore. No one will hurt you here. You are more safe here.”

Her eyes met mine, and for a moment, the fear and uncertainty melted away, replaced by something I couldn’t quite place.

“Thank you,” she said quietly.

I nodded, my chest tightening at the tone in her voice. She didn’t need to thank me, I’d do whatever it took to keep her safe, whether she wanted me to or not.

“You should rest,” I said, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “Tomorrow, we’ll start figuring out who’s after you and how you make you more safe.”

She hesitated, then nodded. “Okay.”

As she settled onto the bed, I turned away, my wolf growling softly in my mind. Whoever had come after her wouldn’t get a second chance.

They’d have to go through me first.
