CHAPTER 28
BLAIR POINT OF VIEW.
I'm the most professional attorney in the whole werewolf kingdom. I am good at my job, and I take it seriously, but I just can't right now with all these eyes fixed on me. I'm using joy, scared of whoever is looking at me when I speak, but right now I'm concerned. I can't help it with the way Darius is looking at me. The way those eyes are peeling my clothes off my skin, the way they're fixated on me… I'm forced to stutter and pretend like he isn't in the same room with me.
Ronan's eyes aren't fixed on me the way Darius's are.
Ronan is busy; he's scrolling through his phone while listening to whatever I have to say. He hates gatherings like this, so I get why he doesn't care, and I'm glad he isn't staring daggers into my soft skin like Darius is.
My throat goes dry the very second I risk another glance in Darius's direction.
Big mistake. Big fucking mistake in a public space. His eyes are still there, still locked on me, steady, and he isn't willing to blink. I guess he forgot that the cameras are in every corner and everyone is here. If there's anyone he should be looking at that way, it's his wife, Seraphina, and not me.
But then, it's so stupidly ridiculous how something as trivial as a stare from Darius could make my entire body betray me.
And how it could make the most confident and badass attorney in the whole werewolf kingdom nervous.
My fingers won't stop trembling around the pen I'm holding.
I have faced judges, rival lawyers from different states, and even furious patriarchs, but none of these eyes do me like this.
“I won't be using any of this written out here, and I also won't be drafting my own,” I announced to the pack hall, and gasps rippled through the room.
Everyone is shocked that I won't be using whatever they had spent months drafting.
All nonsense. I don't need any of that if I want to fix up these elections and make Darius win against my ex-husband.
There's not much time, but I'm going to give it my best shot.
Everyone inside the room is angry that I would be scrapping what they had spent months working on.
And honestly, I get what their anger is all about, but I also do not care about anyone's feelings when I work.
I do whatever the fuck I want and don't care what they think or what they have to say to me.
Everyone in the room is frowning, except Darius, of course.
He tilted his head slightly, and that infuriating smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth.
I looked down at my phone, as if I had any notes there, just to avoid his gaze.
I hate what those eyes do to me; they strip away every layer of composure I have built over the years, and I hate it.
And yet, somewhere deep inside, I don’t want him to stop.
I work spontaneously. “I continued,” and anyone who wants to argue with that and tell me I need a template to remember working spontaneously has made me win every case I have taken—from sexual assault to murder to rape and other gruesome cases. Just to mention, I also ran the campaign of the last Alpha president, so I promise you that this is my job, and everyone has to do as I say if we want this to work. Trash all templates and only take what Blair Knowles says to you.
“Do you understand what I just said?”
There was an awkward silence that stretched for a while.
No words, just murmurs and glances, but the only one I'm concerned about is Darius's.
While everyone was murmuring, Darius gave me a subtle nod of approval.
He's always been that way—always supporting me. He is the alpha, so if he trusts me that much, I do not care what his team has to say.
“First and foremost, Alpha Darius,” I said, darting my eyes away from his face. “Luna Seraphina and everyone else on this campaign block, I want everyone to know my rules while I take you all to that presidential suite. Number one: I am always right in everything I say, and there are no two ways about it. Two: please do not try to argue or challenge my decisions, which is why you should only listen to me whenever I speak. Any member of the team who does otherwise will be fired by me on the spot, so please do not test me. I have done this before, and I promise I can do it again. Your success in taking this pack to heights it has never reached is my agenda. Listen to me, and this will be a monument. Put all of your faith in me, and this pack going into the presidential suite won't be a novelty but a norm.”
So first, I want the team to book interviews with the top ten biggest media houses for the alpha and his Luna. Get the best team and train them for some lovey-dovey moments that will go viral on the internet. And make sure they're in matching outfits.
For a moment, Darius's face slipped back into a shocked frown, while Seraphina almost leaped for joy.
Her face lit up immediately when I told the team she'd be doing her interview with her husband in matching outfits.
Such an innocent smile. I can't say that fully because I know there's something fake about her.
I glanced around, and everyone's faces lit up immediately. But then Darius suddenly stood up from his chair and started to approach me.
“Miss Blair, can I have a private word with you in the next room?” Darius said, walking past me.
