Chapter fifty-nine
Adrien POV
I opened my eyes, drowsily taking in my surroundings. The morning light that filtered through the curtains cast a warm glow on the room.
I stretched a bit. I was expecting to feel the tiny weight pressed on me throughout the night.
But I didn’t feel it. I turned to the side of the bed and noticed it was empty. Esmeralda's sleeping form was no longer following me.
I wondered when she had left. And if she had spent the night in my room. Last I remembered, we shared a wonderful kiss. Then afterward, I pulled away from the kiss so I wouldn’t lose control of myself.
She didn’t seem to protest against me pulling back. Even though I had wished she did. We eventually fell asleep.
And now waking up. I realized she wasn’t in the room. I was thankful she accepted the offer to stay in the same bed.
It helped calm down my worries and fears from last night.
I exited my bed, freshened up, and headed back downstairs.
The time was eight am. Meaning breakfast was already being set.
And today, Sunday, meant the breakfast would be much earlier.
So I wasn’t surprised when I saw Noah, Nora, Kiela, and Esmeralda seated at the dining table.
When Noah, Nora, and kiela saw me, they shouted joyfully.
“Dada!” They were both beaming happily.
“Hello, my angels, how have you been.” I greeted ruffling their hair and giving them both a kiss on their head.
Then I smiled at Esmeralda and kissed her on her cheeks.
She is making her blush hard.
“Oooh.” Nora and Noah echoed at the sight.
While Kiela blushed at it.
It is causing me to chuckle.
“Momma and dada have become like Princess Aurora and the prince,” Nora exclaimed. Her eyes twinkled in joy.
I sat down on the empty seat, readied for me.
I was about to serve my plates with the food in front of me.
But Esmeralda was ahead of me. She had served me instead, making my heart warm massively.
After breakfast, Nora and Noah complained about going out to the park.
“No way, sweetie. We can watch some movies at home.” Esmeralda cooed. I know she refused to accept. Cause she had terrible memories of the park.
It was where we had almost lost Noah.
Eventually, I got them to stop complaining when I ordered ice cream for them.
Esmeralda was against it. But I assured her not to worry. We rarely let the children have ice cream or anything unhealthy.
So I was sure that this little one wouldn’t hurt.
We watched some cartoons while Nora, Noah, and Kiela ate their ice cream.
Esmeralda was cuddled up against me.
While Noah, Nora, and Kiela were too keen on their cartoon to notice or care.
This was indeed the happy life of any man.
I was invested in it when I heard a phone ping—disrupting the movie. Even the children heard it.
“Sorry, little wolves. Go back to your cartoon.” I cooed.
The noise had come from the phone next to me.
It was Esmeralda's phone. I handed it to her.
Her eyes went from peaceful to troubled when she checked what it was.
“Is everything Alright?” I asked in a low tone. Not wanting to disturb the children.
“I got another text.” She mouthed, handing me her phone.
The text read.
“Hey, beautiful. How was the sleepover in Adrien’s room? And please let the children go to the park. They are wolves. You should train them to be strong warriors. Not cowards. Also, ice cream is bad for five-year-olds. Wolf or human. Adrien is a fool for not knowing this.”
The message read.
This was ten times creepier than normal.
And Esmeralda was beginning to shake up in fear.
“Hey, calm down. Did you text anyone about last night or right now?”
“No. I haven’t been on my phone since last night.” She said.
Does that mean that the house was bugged? But how would they have managed to get past the security in the house and bug it?
They only have to be friends to be able to do so.
That’s right! Friends! Is perhaps one of Esmeralda's friends planting a trick on her?
I didn’t think so, the two friends of Esmeralda are Lizzy and Margaret. Lizzy had spent her entire energy and time trying to save the life of Esmeralda and Noah. She loves them way too much to be behind this foolery.
Margaret also spent her entire time caring for the children and the office. There’s no way that she could be the one.
Who then was behind all of this?
Miss Irene didn’t even have a phone to begin with. Most of the time, she is absent from our conversations.
So she couldn’t be the one.
I have been with Logan almost every time and even had access to his files.
So, I knew that he wasn’t the one.
Who, then, could it be?
“This person knows so much. They had either been in the house when it all happened. Or they got through the house through someone else.”Esmeralda mouthed.
“Momma, are you okay?” Noah was the one who asked. We hadn’t even noticed when they had taken their attention from the cartoon and were watching us.
“It’s nothing, sweetie. Keep watching your cartoon.” Esmeralda cooed.
They both gave her a skeptical look.
“I promise, little wolves. It nothing. Keep watching. Your momma and I would have to talk elsewhere. Don’t stop watching. Cause when I come back, you are telling me everything.” I told them.
They nodded and went back to the cartoon.
“Let’s talk in your office.”
She nodded her head, and we went into her office.
“What if it was Miss Irene?” Esmeralda asked as soon as we got inside.
“What! No way. She doesn’t have a phone to do this. She’s old. She wishes to do her job, I don’t think she would be planning-“
“I don’t mean her. I meant, what if someone was using her to get to us? What if someone asked her questions about us? And she told them. She’s the only one that knew I was in your room. And that the children got ice cream today.”
“There’s a possibility that the house is just bugged. Miss Irene doesn’t have children or a husband. She practically lives with us. Who is she then going to talk to about this?”
Esmeralda bit her lower lips in deliberations. “You have a point. But how would our house get bugged?”
“I know. The security system would have informed us if there was a bug. It’s how it’s built.”
“Would you at least check it out? Maybe the person got through it and bugged it.” Esmeralda had a point. I should never put anything past me at this point.
I took out my phone and called Julian, the head of Helix security, who had fixed all the security issues in our homes.
“Hello. Can you come to Maple Wood Street? Block 205. Right now.”
“Wow. This is weird. Is everything okay? Are you good?”
“I’ll explain everything to you. Just come over. Now!”
“On my way.” He said in a more serious tone. The call cuts.
I knew Julian when I went to a business school to be able to handle my work as the next CEO. He’d been there learning how to be the CEO of a security corporation. And it seemed the work had worked out well. He was amongst the top ten best security corporations in the world. And the best in America.
Julian was close to me cause I had helped him when he had no financial help. I gave him one to start up his business. And helped oversee that his junior sister went to college.
It was why he was forever grateful to me. He would also answer me anytime I called him.
“Have you considered the other possibilities?” Esmeralda asked after being quiet for a while.
“The possibilities of this being from our close friends?”
“Yeah.” I could hear the fear in her voice.
I walked up to her. Taking her hands.
“I have considered the possibilities. And I know they wouldn’t do something like this. They wouldn’t try to freak you out or scare you this way. They wouldn’t think of hurting you. They would rather hurt themselves instead. I trust Dizzy and Margaret. And if I do. Then don’t you think you owe it to them also to trust them?”
She bit her lower lips again in the deliberation of my words. “You are right. Gosh, I’m such a bad friend! After everything they have done for me. And I just…”
“It’s okay, sweetie. You are just trying to be careful. Is all.”
She let out a small smile.
The door to the office creaked open, and Miss Irene stepped inside.
“A gentleman is here to see you both.”
“Let him in here,” I instructed.
She left and, a few minutes later, came back with Julian.
Then she left back. Julian was a tall black guy with a tattoo and a bald head.
He fits the bad black man title so well. Due to that, many people ran away from him. Especially the white.
Which I thought was annoying. When getting to know Julian, I realized that he was pretty sweet and that his appearance was just a demeanor to look mean.
“Hey, man.” He shook me. His eyes came on Esmeralda. He extended his hands.
“And who is this beautiful angel here?”
I rolled my eyes. I forgot that he was a big flirt.
“Hands off. She’s my woman.”
He made a disappointed look. “Well, please let me know if you have a sister or a friend.”
Esmeralda laughed. While I playfully glared at him. Another good thing about Julian is his ability to lift people's dark moods.
