Chapter 37

Chapter 37

Kaiden’s POV

I sat looking at Elara, unsure what to say to her. I didn't look happy to see her and it was clearly written on my face. I wished it was Amelia who came to check on me—she was the only person I wanted to see at that moment. I looked at her for a moment before I finally found my voice to speak to her.

“Please leave Elara, I don't want you here. You don't have to be here with me.” I said calmly, my tone laced with disappointment. She was taken aback at my statement, it was as though she didn't expect me to ask her to leave. ‘How on earth did she find me here?’ I thought to myself.

It was as though she had been monitoring my movement within the palace. I desperately wanted to see Amelia at that moment, nobody else mattered to me—all I wanted was my Amelia. I wanted Elara out of my sight, her presence seemed to make my heart ache.

She stared at me as I wore my clothes after I had completely shifted to my human form. Her intense gaze pierced my soul, I locked eyes with her for a while before I shifted my gaze from hers. I knew she had feelings for me ever since we met, and I wasn't ready to reciprocate her feelings for me.

My heart belongs elsewhere—Amelia had stolen my heart. She was the only person who had the key to my heart. I planned to make things clear to Elara, I didn't want to give her any hope of us being together. Amelia was the only woman I wanted in my life and no one else could take her space in my heart even though things were not going well for both of us.

I believed everything would be over one day and I’d have the chance to spend the rest of my life with the woman my heart truly yearns for—Amelia. I could read all of Elara’s actions, I knew she was in love with me. She had been acting all clingy and she gave me attention that I didn't ask for.

I knew no woman would ever take Amelia’s place in my heart, not even Elara. I was not dumb not to understand that she had feelings for me. I was sure she knew I had a thing for Amelia, but she tried her best to win my heart over her. I wasn’t ready to fake any relationship with her, I planned to set boundaries for her.

I knew the sudden closeness that she formed with me was hurting  Amelia a lot, and I wasn’t ready to keep up with it. Amelia had an excuse for getting close to Damien even though it hurt, but I didn’t have any excuse for forming a close relationship with Elara.

I had agreed to stroll with her the last time we had breakfast together because I wanted to keep an eye on her, but she took it to another level. I saw the hurt in Amelia’s eyes that day, I knew she was pained when she saw her hand hooked into mine.

Elara acted so clingy on purpose that day just to hurt Amelia. She had ruined everything at the last minute when she knew Amelia was staring at us. She held my arms tightly and grinned from ear to ear immediately she noticed that Amelia’s attention was on us.

She was in no position to make Amelia unhappy, her happiness was all that mattered to me and I wasn’t ready to let anyone hurt her. I was very uncomfortable with the way things were going, but I had to keep up with the flow in order not to ruin Amelia’s plan.

My heart began to boil in anger as I remembered what happened that day. I was angry at myself and Elara. I felt like I had given her the chance to come close to me. After Elara looked at me in silence for a long time, she finally found her voice.

“I came from the palace to check on you and the only thing you have to say to me is for me to leave?” She asked, pain evident in her voice.

“I’m sorry Elara, I’m not just in the mood to see anyone right now.” I countered, my facial expression blank without any sign of remorse. I stood up on my feet and walked away from her, my hand crossed across my chest. I thought of how I was going to reduce my closeness with her before things got out of hand.

My mind was filled with different thoughts, I noticed Elara’s intense stare on me but I ignored her—I pretended as if I didn’t know she was with me.

“Are you thinking about Maya?” She questioned suddenly, her voice interrupting my thoughts.

I looked up at her and remained silent, I knew she was keen to know what was on my mind. I ignored her as though I didn’t hear anyone speak.

“I’d take your silence for a yes then.” She said with a sly smile spread across her face. “Well, I’m sure you know that Amelia and Damien are close. I want to let you know that they are closer than you imagined, Kaiden.” She added, with seriousness on her face.

I wondered where all that was coming from, I didn’t ask her about anything concerning Amelia or Kaiden and I had never confided in her before. ‘What gave her the right to interfere in my personal affairs’ I thought to myself. But I decided to keep my calm and listen to all she had to say.

“Maya is trying her best to take Freya’s place in the palace. Damien no longer speaks to Freya about the issue in the palace, he only seeks Maya's opinion in every decision he has to make.” She continued her voice soft and calm.

“So, why are you telling me all this? What is your business with my personal life? I don’t remember confiding in you about anything that concerned my personal affair.” I countered, my tone laced with anger.

“I’m just trying to make you see things the right way, Kaiden. Maya is forcing herself on Damien, she is so desperate to get his attention. Isn’t it obvious to the blind that they are in love with each other? Why do you find it so hard to understand?” She queried, her voice louder this time.

I was infuriated at the utterances she made, but I tried my best to keep my calm.

“She and Damien were once close in the past, don’t you feel like this sudden closeness between them might rekindle their old feelings for each other?” She pressed, as she moved closer to me.

“Can you stop all this Elara?! Please stop! I never asked for your opinion on my personal life!” I barked at her, my eyes burning in anger.

“I’m just trying to help you, Kaiden. It is as though you are blinded by love—you need to see things the right way. She is not interested in you, she looks more interested in Damien. Don’t you see the way Damien looks at her?! Why is it so hard for you to understand?”

“What are you up to, young lady? What's your plan?” I asked her, as I looked into her eyes.

She moved closer to me, her body almost pressing against mine. She raised her hand to place her palm on my chest and I stepped back immediately. I noticed a change in her countenance as she dropped her hand.

“You don't deserve someone like her, Kaiden. She is not worth your attention. You deserve someone better—someone who will love and have eyes for you alone.”
