ALPHA XANDER POV

I stared at both of them in horror.

"He what?"

Anna's father sighed.

"He was going to get mated to Val. They were young and...he was a capable young man and I believed he'd be a good match for Anna. She hated the idea and violently protested it, right until her disappearance. Farron remained devoted. He helped us search everywhere for her. And when we had lost all hope, he stayed by our side helping the pack and us in any way he could. I was going to make him my successor"

"What happened?"

"His attitude changed suddenly. The pack that always praised him began to complain. I noticed some odd behavior from him and cautioned him. He didn't take it so well so I threatened to have him removed as my successor" 

I muttered under my breath. 

"He didn't react violently at first but in a short time, his attitude worsened and then he murdered a pack member. He refused the punishment after making a loud scene. That's the last time any of us saw him"

"They made a good plan, even had us fooled that she crossed to the clearing on the other side of the river. They never left and I have a feeling they're around somewhere. We just need to fucking figure out where they could have taken her"

"We can help" they both uttered but I shook my head. 

"I have no idea how much or how far he's gotten. Plus you're also in danger since he has some grievances against you. I want you protected and safe"

Anna's father tried to protest but his mate stopped him.

"I trust that you'll bring my daughter and grandchild back" she smiled weakly, tears filling up her eyes.

I returned the smile and looked over to Gabriel.

"Have them settled in. Any word from Xavier?" He shook his head. I turned back to Bailey who was still waiting. 

"Was there a tracker on the letter?" She shook her head.

"I didn't bother with it since I was sending...."

"You'll never send a message out if this pack without the use of an authorized messenger"

"Of course alpha" she mumbled and I stalked past her.

"Alpha Simeon just arrived at the border" Xavier announced, showing up suddenly. His hair still dripped with water and he had a weird look ok now face.

"Get changed and be in the office" I muttered and walked away.

Simeon was brought up to my office the moment after I arrived and was seated.

"What is this I hear about your mate being kidnapped"

"An old enemy, from her pack"

"Anyone you suspect?"

"I know who it is. I'm trying to find out where the fuck they are and there's my suspicion that they must have worked with Elderman" Simeon straightened up.

"Why wait for over eleven years?"

"I have no fucking idea. And it's a complicated story. I'm trying to find out where the fuck they have her and they're keeping them"

"What have you found so far"

"A fucking useless traitor in my pack. He let the kidnapper through the border and handed the final instruction to Anna. She left her scent on him so I was able to tell"

"You've tortured him?"

"He's passed out now but they'll be reviving him. The letter instructed her to be at the clearing across the river. But her scent stops at the end of the river on our side. She never made it to the clearing"

Simeon hummed. "The letter was going to lead you astray when you eventually found it"

Exactly. But since I knew what I knew, I wouldn't bother searching on the other side of the river.

"That means they never left your pack"

"Precisely. So where could they be? And who could be hiding them?"

"The guards are prowling the pack. The captive has little to no use since he can't provide any reasonable explanation"

"I can be of help, I'll have my men scouting. If they are still in your pack, it means they'll be looking for means to get out"

I nodded. "Thank you Simeon"

"It's not an issue. We're friends aren't we?" I laughed.

"These people...who are they to your mate. She doesn't have her memory back right?"

"Farron..." he frowned as he stared at me.

"Her ex?"

"He was never her ex. They were supposed to get mated before she left"

Simeon stared at me blankly. 

"So the same thing?" I huffed and continued.

"He's partnering with an old friend of hers from what we know. And according to Anna's parents, Farron and the old friend used to be a thing before their mating was arranged"

"That's...so the old friend wants revenge. But what does Farron want?"

"I'd say revenge as well. According to Anna's parents, he'd been acting up and saying some crazy things about wanting Anna but it was mostly centered around the fact that he was supposed to become the next alpha”

Simeon nodded silently.

“So they’ve most likely teamed up to get revenge” he mumbled and I nodded.

“There could be more, but that’s all I have for now”

The office door opened and Xavier stepped in.

“Simeon” he nodded in greeting and Simeon scowled.

“Where did you crawl out of?”

“Your ass” Xavier said pointedly and Simeon snarled at him. 

I rolled my eyes at their childish behavior.

“Now is not the time” I growled.

Xavier shot me an apologetic look as he settled into an empty chair.

“The guards are searching the pack and with the new information we’ve gotten, we know who to look out for. Since their motive is revenge, they’re slightly unpredictable. They could make demands…or they have something else in mind. Also, we know they haven’t left the pack”

Both of them nodded at me.

“Farron visited here a good number of times. He explored the pack” Xavier reminded me.

“He had over eleven years to get to know our pack under the guise of exploring and we were none the wiser” The words were bitter in my mouth. I’d fucked up there.

“Didn’t you have guards on him all the time?”

“In the beginning. But he never did anything except visit the tavern and find whores. I stopped bothering after some years and pushed the responsibility to Gabriel”

“Gabriel may have something for us but if not, we can visit the tavern. If he was planning something, then he was talking to people and asking questions” Simeon added. I mindlinked Gabriel and two minutes later, he came in through the door.

“Alpha” he greeted respectfully, his eyes going around the room.

“Did you keep watch on Farron whenever he visited?”

“Yes. You ordered me to. But just like the other man had discovered, he only ever went to the tavern. Stayed for hours and disappeared”

“We should go to the tavern” I said as I stood to my feet.

“I asked questions” Gabriel said, halting me. 

“What did you find?”

“He always paid for a room and disappeared inside there for a long time. And once midnight struck, he’d reappear and leave the tavern. Each time he visited, it was the same thing”

I pressed my fingers to my lips as my mind travelled.

“Gather the men. I’ll head to the tavern with Xavier. Once I mind link you, you come with the men” I turned to Simeon.

“What do I do?”

“We may need your men too. Can you have them on standby?” Simeon nodded.

“Do you know where they are?” Xavier asked, studying my face and I nodded.

“Under the tavern”

“What?” All the men looked at me with strange faces.

“Before the tavern was built there, father had an underground weaponry. Only one of the rooms had access underground. Elderman knew about it and if they worked with him, well it explains why he’d know about it”

Xavier nodded with a surprised look on his face and I turned away.

I was going to get my mate and kill that bastard.
