Chapter 250 The Resurrection Man's Last Feat

Chapter 250 The Resurrection Man's Last Feat
POV: Jack | Mobile, London streets during battle
Silas kept his records for forty years and I have been keeping them for four more, and together they represent forty-four years of the supernatural underground's complete operational history, every transaction and every secret and every body and every deal and every piece of information that passed through the network that Silas built and that I inherited, and the records have a value that I have been managing carefully since the day I understood what I had inherited, which is the specific value of something that everyone wants to exist and nobody wants released.
The mutual assured destruction principle, in its human political form, is the principle that two parties who each have the capacity to destroy the other will not destroy each other because the destruction is mutual, and the principle holds when both parties understand it and when both parties believe the other party is rational and when both parties have something to lose that is comparable to what the other party has to lose.
The principle I am about to apply is not exactly mutual assured destruction, because the parties involved are not threatening each other, they are being threatened simultaneously by a third party, which is me, and the thing they each stand to lose is the same category of thing, which is their secrets, and the understanding I am counting on is not the mutual understanding between opponents but the shared understanding of people who have something in common that they did not choose to have in common.
It is seven forty-eight and the battle has been going for two hours and the Veil is failing at the margins and the news reports are multiplying and I am moving through the streets on the edges of the engagement zone with a laptop in my bag and a connection to the network that Tom built and which is still running and which reaches every media outlet and press contact and supernatural community channel that Silas's forty years and my four years and Tom's three years have collectively identified and maintained.
I have Silas's complete records. All of them. Two hundred years of the supernatural underground's complete operational history, which is more comprehensive than the blackmail files Violette released because the blackmail files were Mordaunt's specific collection and Silas's records are the full picture, every party's involvement in every transaction over two centuries, the Covenant's history and the American packs' history and the Parliamentary vampires' history and the dragon syndicate's history and the fae community's history and Callum Brennan's coalition's history and every individual actor who has been part of the supernatural world's operational reality for two hundred years.
Nobody is clean in Silas's records. That is the specific quality of them that makes them the instrument I need, which is that there is no side that can claim the release damages only the other side, because the release damages everyone equally and the mutual damage is the point.
I find a position in a doorway two streets from the main engagement and I open the laptop and I connect to Tom's network and I do not spend time on the decision because I made the decision before I left the Den this morning and the time for decision-making is not in the execution, it is in the preparation, and the preparation is done.
I begin the release at seven fifty-one.
Silas's records go to sixty-three outlets simultaneously, which is the full distribution network, every supernatural press organ and every human journalist who has been on Silas's list as someone who has proximity to the truth and who could receive it and the mainstream outlets that are already running the mass hallucination story and whose receiving of two hundred years of documented supernatural history is going to produce a different story, and the human journalists whose receiving of it is going to produce what it produces when the framework-revision becomes unavoidable.
The release takes four minutes to complete distribution, which is four minutes of the battle continuing at full intensity and the Veil straining and the dragon reserves being deployed and three armies moving through London's streets, and then the release is complete and what happens next is what happens when information is in sixty-three places simultaneously and cannot be recalled.
The Covenant's communications director receives it at seven fifty-six and I know this because the Covenant's field communications go through a channel that Silas's records include the monitoring access for, and what I hear on that channel at seven fifty-six is the specific sound of a communications director receiving something they were not prepared to receive.
The American pack leadership's secure channel goes quiet at seven fifty-eight, which is the specific quiet of a channel where multiple people are reading something at the same time and nobody is speaking yet because they are still reading.
Callum's coalition network receives a message from me at seven fifty-nine which is four words: It's done. Stop fighting.
The battle does not stop at seven fifty-nine. The battle stops at eight fourteen, which is fifteen minutes later, which is the time it takes for the information to move from the leadership channels to the field commanders and for the field commanders to assess what the information means and for the assessment to produce the order.
At eight fourteen the three armies are standing in London's streets not fighting, which is the specific quality of a ceasefire that has not been negotiated but which has been produced by the simultaneous understanding of everyone involved that the alternative is worse than the ceasefire.
The first communication from Vittoria's representatives arrives at eight seventeen: Truce discussion. Where and when?
The American pack's representative arrives at eight nineteen, in person, at the eastern edge of the Rookeries, with a message that says: We need to talk. All three of us. Now.
I close the laptop. I pack it in the bag. I walk toward the Rookeries with the specific quality of someone who has done the thing they came to do and who is now moving toward whatever comes after it.
Tom would have documented this, I think. He would have written it in the records and cross-referenced it against forty other entries and filed it in the correct location and noted that it was the largest single deployment of the network's information capacity in its operational history.
I will write it in the records. That is the job. The job continues.
The three armies are standing in London's streets at eight twenty, not fighting, waiting for a conversation that none of them wanted to have and which is now the only available option, and the conversation is happening because forty-four years of records landed in sixty-three places at seven fifty-one and because Tom built a network that runs without him.
Three armies. One truce. One conversation.
If you keep fighting, humans will see everything.
Truce?
