Chapter 248 The Half-Written Code

Chapter 248 The Half-Written Code
Vella and Thessia looked at each other after Maeve’s explanation. They didn’t think Valeska could figure it out, but she did.

“We want you to come to the office tomorrow and stay there, then attend the party. If possible, give the test and kick his ass. I cannot look at his smug face anymore. Every one of us has given the test, and we have failed. We cannot make that stupid character walk. You make him run!” snapped Thessia.

“I… didn’t understand… what?” asked Maeve, confused.

“Okay, wait!” said Thessia, put Valeska down, grabbed the glass of water, drank it in a gulp, sat next to Maeve, grabbed her hand and explained, “Thor…” she started but immediately corrected herself. Maeve had told her not to use his name. “The new VP has two projects with him. He said that he will give the projects to someone who can pass his exam. He has half-written code; we just have to complete it and execute it. But we have not been able to do it, and he is getting smugger and angrier day by day. You need to come in and bring him down a notch. He looks at us like we are idiots. And then he has this theme party organised for tomorrow. Everyone has to be there. Attendance is mandatory. Whoever does not attend the party will be fired.”

“What the fuck??” shouted Maeve.

“What is fuck, mommy?” asked Valeska, innocently.

Everyone around her made a shocked and embarrassed face and stopped talking. Maeve smiled at Valeska and said, “Nothing, sweetie! This is just what grownups say when they are angry. Kids should never say this. Okay?”

“Okay, mommy! But Auntie Vella and Auntie Thessia brought a bribe for me. Please listen to them and do as they say,” Valeska tried to help Vella and Thessia.

“But I… I cannot…” Maeve had no idea how to avoid going to the office.

“What will happen if he sees you?” whispered Thessia.

“I told you… he… he will try to kill me,” Maeve became sad instantly. She knew she was right. Thorin had already tried to kill her. He sent six bulky men and the serial killer Ozul to kill her. She had no idea how she escaped that day. She had seen the red light escaping from her wounds all her life, but the red light that came out of her was something else. She never felt that intensity before.

Thorin used her body for one night and then discarded her from his life. She even left a note with her details, but he never called her, never even tried to contact her. And the day she approached him, he said that he didn’t want anything to do with her and that she should abort the child. She glanced at Valeska and could not even fathom a life without her. And if Thorin ever came after her, Maeve would burn his whole world down.

“Maybe he won’t remember you,” suggested Thessia.

“Huh!?” Maeve tilted her head and thought for a second. It was true. He might not recognise her. It had been five years since they both saw each other. The way she looked five years ago was way different. She was a malnourished girl then, all bones and less flesh. Now she looked healthy; her cheeks had filled out. She had shorter hair then, and now her hair was almost to her waist.

But then she recognised him in one look. What if he does that too? How will she avoid him then? She knew she could not avoid him forever. No one knew how long he was going to stay. Not going to the office every day was not an option.

“What are you thinking?” asked Vella.

“Fine! Fine! I will come back to the office. But if I am with a client, no one must disturb us. I don’t want the client to think that we are going to take care of his project. No one must butt in. I will give the test after everyone has failed. I already have three projects with me. I don’t want to add to my work. I need to come back to my daughter every evening. If someone can crack the test, that would be good for them. So let’s give that chance to everyone. And what the hell is wrong with you two? How hard is completing a half-written code?” asked Maeve.

“You have no idea! Come and see for yourself!” shouted Thessia.

“Okay, okay, no need to get so worked up. I will come back to the office tomorrow and call the client there. Is that okay?” said Maeve.

“Ohh! That would be brilliant. See you there!” Vella shouted and started clapping with happiness.

“Wait! Mommy, were you not going to the office?” asked Valeska, confused.

“No! Your mommy has been leaving me behind every day,” pouted Vella.

“That is so not true. Didn’t I call you yesterday?” snapped Maeve.

“Yeah, yeah, but no more working away from the office,” said Thessia.

“The new VP is a pain in the A.S.S. I hate him!!” screamed Maeve. She avoided the word ‘Ass’ after her blunder of the word ‘Fuck’ before Valeksa. She didn’t want her daughter to learn curse words.

“Mommy, you can say ass. I know what that means,” said Valeska. “You told me that’s a donkey.”

Everyone looked at each other and started laughing at Valeska’s innocence. Maeve got up and kissed Valeska. “My daughter is so intelligent.”

“Just like you?” asked Valeska, happy.

“More than me!” smiled Maeve.

“Then go and give that test. Show everyone who’s the boss!” said Valeska with pride in her eyes.

“I will do that. I can do anything for you, sweetie!” Maeve looked at Valeska with pride and content in her eyes. “Even if I have to face Thorin, I will do that for you, sweetie. I will make him regret for sending people to kill you. I will make him cry for saying that I should abort you. He will regret meeting me.”

“Okay, see you tomorrow!” said Thessia and stood up to walk out.

“No, no, stay! We can have dinner together. You can tell me everything about the half-written code. What say?” asked Maeve.

“Well! He had said that we must not help anyone. What if he gets to know?” asked Vella.

“How? How will he know?” asked Maeve.

Both Thessia and Vella looked at her. As Maeve was human, she had no idea that wolves existed or that they had powers. Everyone in the wolf community knew about Corvin’s powers. They knew he could figure out that they told Maeve everything.

“Anyway, we don’t really remember every word in that code. How can we?” said Thessia.

“Still! I will take any clue, if you have it,” said Maeve.

“You want to cheat?” asked Vella, laughing.

“I… I have never cheated in my life,” snapped Maeve. “But if you say that everyone’s failing the exam, there must be something he is hiding. Keep talking!”
