Chapter 56 Lycan-King

Chapter 56 Lycan-King
Laura's POV
The true feeling of the death of a loved one came the day after that person died... and that was how I felt. I barely caught sleep throughout that night. I reminisce on past memories spent with my father. I didn't want to lose him at all, I wanted him to live forever in my head, but I was wrong. When morning came, despair became my best friend. I barely had any tears in my tear glands, they had been exhausted the day before. I stared into space, trying to trick my mind into forgetting it but it was useless. It didn't change that I had failed to prove my father's innocence in the matter. A sharp pain tugged at my chest and I bent over. I had finally found a way to create tears in my worn out body. My vision watered severely, I could barely see in front of me. Mack and Blade did everything to console me but it was useless. They didn't understand my pain, they could never understand what I felt. I knew they meant no harm, but they had to leave me to grieve in peace. One time at noon, I slowly turned to Mack who had been keeping me company. I wanted to know if I had been put in some sort of simulation, one that was so real that I couldn't differentiate from real life. "Mack, am I alive?" I asked. She almost choked on the water she was drinking as my question echoed in the room. She was totally befuddled. At the same time, her brows went up as she frantically tried to come up with a suitable answer for that. "No, Laura. You are very much alive and we—" "So my father is really dead?" I cut in. Mack closed her eyes and I could see her fighting back her tears. "Laura, stop being hard on yourself—" Her words hit me like a flame thrown at a river of diesel. "Hard on myself?! Hard?!! I fucking lost my father!" I erupted. "Don't tell me what to do!" "That's right, I don't know what's happening to you!" Mack roared. "Why don't you tell me why you are angry with yourself?" "Because I fucking failed! I failed in my life's mission, I failed!" I screamed. "I was so close... very close until I had that accident. I didn't even get the chance to see him after I woke up, and you tell me to compose myself? Hell, no!" I folded myself forward and I began to cry even harder. I couldn't take this. Why did my father have to die? I cried so much, I didn't know how much time passed but everything suddenly fell silent within me and all I could do was watch. "So you feel better now?" Mack asked. "After all that screaming, you got something out?" I noticed my emotions had calmed down a little and I realized she had riled me up on purpose. "You sly bitch," I muttered. "Thank you," I sobbed and wiped my tears. She walked over and wrapped her arms around me. "Why don't we go to Felicity's place? The hospital seems too depressing for me. I wonder how it is for you." It was a good suggestion. I really needed a change of scenery. "Yeah, I will go." I nodded at her. Mack stood up with a large smile on her face. "That's good, let me call Blade to get your things. The doctor said you should have been discharged yesterday." I offered her a little smile, letting her deal with everything while I watched. She pulled out her phone and dialed Blade's number. She explained the situation to him and before long the door opened with a wheel chair and a cheerful Blade behind it. "Finally, you'd be going home," he said as he moved the chair to me. I frowned and glared at him. "I don't need a wheelchair. I can walk," I said, already trying to get to my feet. "No, your legs have been asleep for too long. Of course you are going to feel disoriented the minute you try to walk," he warned. I would have argued but something in his eyes made me give in. I suddenly felt tired; not physically but emotionally. I just wanted to go home. "Okay," I mumbled and Mack helped me get into it. "Mack please take her to the car, I'll finish the formalities here—" the words were barely out of his mouth when the door opened and a fuming doctor Twain stepped in. "What in the goddess name is going on here?" He growled. We all stopped moving and turned to stare at the red faced doctor. "You may be the King's relative but I'm telling you, she can't leave the hospital! We are still doing tests! She is fragile right now!" He yelled. "I have signed her release forms, Twain. You don't have to get worked up," Blade said, waving at Mack to move. Mack instantly took the lead and began pushing me out of there. "What sort of doctor are you? Didn't you read her data?" Twain retorted at Blade's reply. "I'm a certified doctor, I treat people. You know me Twain, I can take care of her!" Blade roared. "Look, why don't you call the king? He will kill me if he learns she left the hospital without telling him!" Twain added. It was at that point that Mack wheeled me outside and their arguments became nothing but a murmuring symphony in the background. Mack patted my shoulder. "It's alright. You are safe now," she said softly. I nodded in response. Thankful that she had my back. I really didn't want to stay in the hospital anymore. I didn't want a chance to see Julian... I might take the chance not to see him for the rest of my life. His name brought back bitter memories. Blade soon joined us in the car and he drove us to Felicity's house and I was glad they remained silent on the way. I took my time basking in the scenery on the way. The countryside was still quite green at the time of the year. We drove up the hill to Felicity's house, a mansion on top of the hill. "We are here," Blade mentioned as he stopped the car. He quickly got out of the car and brought out my wheelchair from the back. He opened the door at my side and held it open for me. "You need help?" He asked and I shook my head. "No, It's fine." I got out of the car, it was quite an effort because I was out of breath. I didn't remember the last time I ate some food. "Oh dear!" Felicity came out of the house and she wrapped her arms around me. "Your father, he is in a better place now. That's all we should think about," she said as she pulled back to stare into my eyes. My fists tightened as my emotions felt chaotic with sorrow. Even though it was the usual cringe thing to say, I knew she was right. My father wasn't suffering again. I was led inside the house and Blade helped me to the chair. "It's alright, my legs are working fine. It's just weak," I protested. "I will be your crutch if you want to, I just want you to be comfortable," Blade smiled. A small smile formed on my face. "Thank you. But it really isn't necessary." Felicity came back after some time with a glass of water. I realized that I was very thirsty because water has never looked so good before. And from the look of things, it was chilled! I grasped the cup and drank half in one go. I laid down the glass gently and looked in front of me. "I see you have an appetite, why don't we bring some food to you—" "No, I'm not going to eat." I whispered. "My father's body is in a freezer, while I eat and dine here." I leaned back on my chair. "Until my father is buried, I won't eat anything." Felicity glanced at Blade for support and he also looked back at Mack. "Laura, at least eat some—" "You heard me." I cut Mack off. "No matter how long it takes, I won't eat until he is buried." Mack scratched her head. "Fine, how do you want it to be? The ceremony?" "I see you are not aware of anything," Blade spoke from the corner. We both turned our heads towards him. "What?" I demanded. Blade measured his words, calculating how he would spill them out from his guts, his tongue and spewed out to the air. "Well, the Lycan-king has been handling that matter for a while now." "What do you mean? What— what is he doing?" I stood up quickly, but my weak knees trembled and I sagged back to the chair. What did Julian want this time? "He has set a date for the burial. The day after tomorrow, at noon. He passed it as a message to the entire realm and he—" Blade stopped and rubbed his lips. "What is it?" I was impatient. "Tell her," Felicity encouraged him. "He has cleared your father's name. Some kind of evidence has been found. Turns out he investigated on his own—" Blade's words blurred out in my head until there was a low ring in my eardrums. I felt very bitter the way things turned out. "My father had to die before Julian realised the truth?
