Chapter 54 It's My Father
Chapter 54 It's My Father
Julian's POV.
I didn't like where this was going. Seeing Mackenzie crying like this. I knew there was something more than just the fact that Laura was dying. She had already come to her before and this was too sudden. "Mackenzie, calm down." I looked back at the door and lowered my voice. We had to be careful, for Laura's sake. "Tell me what's wrong." Mackenzie wiped her tears. "I passed his ward a while ago and there was an emergency. The doctor on duty said he doesn't have much time, a complication just happened—" her voice shook and she was unable to continue. I frowned. The last time I heard about Laura's father, he was recovering. It wasn't possible for him to just relapse like that, unless he was sabotaged. "Shit, can you take me there—" I started to say but before I could finish Laura barged out of the room. Her eyes were blank, as if she was in shock. Her hands were held out in front of her. "Tell me, what's wrong with my father?" She asked. I clamped my teeth together. She wasn't supposed to know this. Laura stepped forward and looked into my eyes. "Julian! Julian answer me!" "It's nothing, I will just go and check it—" "You are lying! Tell me it's not true!!" Heads turned in the corridor, attracted towards the sudden outburst. Laura's body trembled and she held Mackenzie's hands. "Mack, please tell me what I just heard isn't true." Laura's pale body shook, I feared she might just collapse again. Mackenzie couldn't look her in the eyes as tears streamed down her face. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, Laura. I'm very sorry Laura!" Mackenzie sobbed. Laura slowly sat on the floor and looked straight ahead. "Mackenzie, stay here with Laura, let me go and check it out!" I turned away but Laura had suddenly grabbed my arm. "I'm going with you!" Silent tears streamed down her face. Her eyes were wide open, she wasn't blinking at all. "No, Laura you stay here—" "It's my father!" She screamed into my face. "I have the damned right to see him over you!" I nodded and turned to Mackenzie. "Come with us, I want you to be with Laura." Mackenzie wiped her tears and held Laura's hands and we went to her father's ward. On the way, I kept on praying silently. I was hoping that Raphael wouldn't die. It was unfortunate when we got to the ward, because Raphael was breathing his last and the doctors couldn't help him. They stood around him with their heads bowed low. "No, no, no!" Laura screamed and ran to her father's side. His eyes opened widely when he saw his daughter and he pointed to the door. His breathing was laboured and I could see that it would be anytime soon. It was until when he opened his mouth to talk and started gasping I knew something was wrong. "They were here—" Raphael said before everything stopped. Laura let out a devastating scream and I realized that the man was dead. I had never seen Laura cry like that before. She wailed at his side and buried her face in his chest. "I just needed more time... I would have proven to everyone that you were innocent!" Painful tears rolled down her face. She cried with a lot of pain in her heart. It was a mixture of regret, pain for not accomplishing her life's mission and the loss of her loved one. Mackenzie tried her best to console her, but she wasn't any better because she was crying too. The doctors and nurses gave us some privacy and left the room. Raphael's words lingered in my head. 'They were here—' while pointing at the door. It was foul play. He was sabotaged by someone. They didn't want him saying the truth. Now I didn't like Raphael, I hated him for killing my sister. But seeing this, I knew something was wrong. I started questioning my actions. I shook the thought away, if I was going to solve this. I needed to find out what had truly happened. "Mackenzie," I called. She looked up at me with puffy eyes. Laura continued wailing beside her. "Watch over Laura, be strong. I will be right back, I need to see what happened in the security department," I informed her and took my leave. As I stepped out of the door, one of the doctors approached me. He bowed his head low and cleared his throat. "Yes?" I asked, irritated by the interruption. "My king, I just wanted you to know something. From what we understand, Mr Raphael was poisoned." I felt enraged. This confirmed my suspicion. "For your sake, I hope that is really the case. I won't take incompetence lightly!" I warned him. "Yes!" He trembled. "Okay, I need those results delivered to me. Keep an eye on those women inside until I get back." I instructed. The doctor nodded and I moved towards the elevator. I whipped out my phone and dialled James' number. He picked up on the first ring. "James, where are you?" I growled. "I'm on my way to you. I just heard what happened! I'm so sorry for the Luna!" "Meet me at the security department of this hospital. I need to understand what happened in that room," I said before ending the call. Five minutes later, we were on the sixth floor of the hospital. The security department consisted of both doctors and security officers. The doctors watched their patients, the officers watched out for intruders. James came towards me as soon as I walked through the doors. "Good, tell me what you have," I said as I saw him. "We are checking footage." He showed me to a table where an operator worked furiously on the keyboard. A large screen displayed what happened the entire time. The screen was blank and the operator's brow went up in surprise. "What's wrong?" I asked. He turned towards me. "My king, ten minutes of the footage is missing." "What do you mean missing?" I dragged a chair and checked it by myself. I rewinded the footage and the footage went blank. It resumed coverage until after the doctors appeared and tried stabilising him. "Check that floor, who entered on that floor an hour prior and everything. Check for anybody unusual!" James ordered. The operator resumed at his table. The keyboard clacked furiously as he worked hard. I kept my eyes on the screens the whole time. Something... there had to be something. "I have found the problem." The operator looked up. "We have been hacked, the footage has been scrubbed. Whoever did this, must have gotten their hands on something state of the art for us not to notice." I covered my face in frustration. "Are you telling me we can't recover it?" I asked him. "I can't, my king. It has been deleted from the server directly. Like I said, they are very good." I clenched my fists. "How can a security department not notice when they have been hacked? What's your job here?!!" I moved away from the screen and focused my attention on the rest of the men in the room. "I want all of you to keep your eyes peeled until you find anything!" I roared before storming outside the door. James caught up with me outside and I turned to him. "James, I need you to conduct a search. I doubt whoever did this has gone far. Work with the pack security if you have to." James nodded. "I will do just that, what about you?" He asked. I looked at the bright ceiling. "I will be going back up to console Laura. Do you have anything you want to tell me?" James nodded and lowered his voice and looked around. "I don't think Raphael is the one that killed your sister." My countenance instantly changed as I glared at him. I was going to explode when he quickly raised his hands in protest. "Wait, I know what you are going to say!" He called. The explosion in my heart paused and I whispered. "Continue, let me hear it." "Evidence at the sight, the grip used on the knife and the strength... It didn't look like Raphael had that kind of strength. Even the prints on the knife didn't belong to him, I thought I should tell you that," he replied. Looking back at what happened today, James might not be wrong at all, but I didn't want to buy that it was related to my sister's case. "James—" "Look back at it, my king!" He insisted. "Why would Raphael be attacked now? He was already learning how to talk again." "The doctor told me he was poisoned," I mentioned. "Yes, exactly!" James whispered harshly. "That's proof that we are onto something." The thought of Laura's father just being a victim made me sick in my stomach. If I didn't attack him, he wouldn't be in that situation.
