Chapter 39 A Killer
Chapter 39 A Killer
Julian
A lot of people might have given up on me, but I was still going strong. I still believed Laura and I would make up and become close again. 'She loved me', this thought alone, made me feel like I was soaring. Truly, the words of her diary were getting into my head. Each entry had been an eye opener for me and now, I thrived to make her happy. I thrived to make her happy, just like she had always dreamed of as a little girl. With a smile on my face, I scrolled through pictures of the ideal picnic locations on Google near me and I was impressed. The smile on my face grew wider as I imagined being with Laura on the beach. The sound of her laughter alone would be a great competition to the beautiful sound of the sea waves. Her eyes would compete with the tranquillity the beach brought... Her cheeky smile and the way her eyes watered when she laughed very hard— Sarah suddenly barged into the room and her eyes centred on me. I slowly put down my phone and watched as she came to me. "Have I offended you?" She whispered and I paused. I had to be careful with the way I answered this. No questions, I wouldn't ask questions. "No, you haven't," I replied in a voice that was surprisingly calm despite the turmoil going on within me. —If I asked her why she was asking me that question, it would spiral out of control. She would rant all day about it. "Sarah—" "I'm not stupid Julian." She cut me off, before I could even say two words before she continued. "I am not blind either Julian! I see everything, even the ones you think you can hide from me." Her eyes narrowed on me. I remained silent. Let her do the talking. "I saw the flowers and gifts you bought her. I saw the way you were behaving when dinner was served." I narrowed my eyes on her. I had been caught in the act. Sarah walked to my side slowly, she held the chair and stood behind me. Her arms slid on my shoulders and I shook my head. "Sarah, it's not what you think it is," I tried convincing her. "I'm telling you, I'm just trying to make sure that she's in good morale for our divorce, nothing else." Sarah fell silent, uncomfortably silent. I refused to stare up at her face, because I wouldn't be able to lie to her again. "Are you being honest with yourself Julian?" She lowered her lips to my face. I stared hard in front of me. A bead of sweat slowly rolled down my neck. It wasn't hot, but I was still managing to sweat. "Sarah, what are you doing?" She caressed my shoulders. "I'm making you see the truth, the light. Buying creamy doughnuts, planning a picnic—" I glanced down at my phone, the screen was still on. I turned the screen off and clenched my jaws. "And you are making her uncomfortable. What will your sister say about this?" I turned at Sarah. My eyes were void, signalling her I was angry. "Be careful how you mention my sister's name." My voice was low and menacing. There was a slight hint of bloodlust behind it. Sarah removed her arms and folded them. "You are one to talk, but you are playing love with your enemy, nursing her father back to health. The one totally involved in your sister's death and you dare threaten me, Julian," she spat at me, with a voice full of scorn. My breath quickened. I looked down at my phone and shook my head. Sarah walked around the room. "Doubt me if you want. But we both know that's true. You are fighting to turn a blind eye, but that's the stark truth, Julian." She held up a picture frame of my sister on the table and wiped it with a napkin, placing it back with the picture looking at me. I had never been so conflicted before. I was between rage and disappointment, pity and resentment. "You see Julian, I'm soon to be your mate. I will tell you things people can't say to your face because they are scared of you, but I'm not because I know you." She stood before me. "I love you Julian, so I will be direct." I stood up and went to the window. My eyes darted wildly as I struggled to maintain composure. My heart felt squeezed because I was torn between two places. "Have you no shame, Julian? Leave her. Let her go if you truly want to avenge your sister." Her statement, sliced through me and I erupted. "Sarah! Enough, I've heard you okay? I've heard you!" I banged my fist into the wall and the sound echoed through the room. "I know what I have to do, I know I'm not wrong..." I trailed. Even now, I wasn't so sure of myself again. "Listen to yourself. I hope you will do what's right, and that's family first. Think about it Julian." She was right behind me. She was pressing on, I knew it. But I couldn't ignore her words because she was right. What the hell was I thinking? Running around town trying to please a woman I was divorcing and worse, whose family had murdered my sister? "I—I haven't forgotten about it," I mumbled. "I just need..." Heavy footsteps approached the door and it opened. I sensed Laura's presence as she barged inside uninvited. My heart sank. Not the right time for this at all. What did she want from me? Even if my wolf was jumping in excitement at the very thought that Laura was here. I knew that having Sarah and her in the same place, only spelt trouble. Sarah stared between the both of us and stood at the wall, waiting for us to talk. "Julian! Why did you do it? Why did you postpone the divorce ceremony?!" Laura was livid. I slowly turned to her. Hoping to see some sort of pain in her eyes but I saw none. All that was there was rage. My heart shattered. Everything inside me froze as I couldn't believe my ears, was that what she wanted all along? She couldn't have wanted this? She loved me. Her diary said she loved me. She adored me... How could this same person, request for our end? "Laura, what are you saying?" Laura held her hands to her face as if she wanted to squeeze it. "I know you heard me, I don't need to repeat myself. The divorce has been postponed! How long do you want to keep me here? How long is this madness going to last for?" She glared right through me. I squinted my eyes, my cheeks burning as an embarrassing aura washed over me. "I— I—" I was unable to continue because I thought of all the efforts I had invested. The flowers, the letter of apology, the doughnuts, dinner. All of this, wasted. Sarah chuckled and clapped her hands. "Bravo! Can you see that now? Can you see people like her don't deserve to be with you? Can you see that she doesn't deserve to be treated right?" Laura frowned in confusion. She didn't understand what was happening. "The person you want to be with hates you. Can you see that now? How would our son feel if he knew about this?" She stood between Laura and I. "That his father was ready to throw everything to be with a woman that hated him, plus whose father killed his sister?" "What are you talking about Sarah?" Laura snarled. "He wanted my son to have you as his stepmother, is that hard for you to understand?" "Bullshit, I'm getting a divorce soon," Laura retorted. My face slowly twisted into a sharp sneer. A rage piled inside me and I lifted my phone. I cancelled the reservations I made at the beach and I stared at Laura. There was no love in my eyes anymore. I was dumb for thinking there could be anything between us. I was super dumb for wasting time in her diary when none of those were ever going to happen. She was just like her father. —A killer! To think that I wanted to give her another chance sickened me! Sarah was right, Laura didn't deserve me at all. "You want your divorce ceremony, right? Huh? Answer me!" I roared at Laura. She fell silent and looked at Sarah and I. I went back to the table and wrote a letter. I signed at the end and showed it to Laura's face. "We will have our divorce ceremony tomorrow, and then we can each go our separate ways!" I roared. Laura nodded and turned away. She never even looked back. —Not even once.
