Freya’s POV
We were at another event and by we—I meant I and Oliver along with Ethan and Celine. They had come together as a couple.
This was a fundraiser event. Something the rich people do.
It was different from the event we had last attended—there were no masks covering people's faces, no excessive makeup to hide their pale skin, and most of all it didn’t feel like I was in an animal den—just the unwelcoming gaze I got from the woman around and the lust in the stares of the men.
We had made a deal. I was to follow him to events he was to attend and get paid for it.
The party was going smoothly until he turned to me “I am going to make an announcement soon, I need you to stay here” This was the first statement I had gotten out of him, apart from his one worded answers he usually responded to my questions with.
I blinked “Announcement?”
“Yes, I am sure you would be excited about this announcement” he beamed like he was trying to imprint a message in my brain but I had no idea what was going on in that mind.
I watched him take a pretty lady with blonde hair and the perfect body, contradicting mine, leading her to the stage. All heads turned to me, I guess they were also confused as me—wondering what was going on. To them I was like an abandoned bride watching her husband go away with another lady, ironically I felt like that.
Their gaze felt like hundreds of needles on my skin. I knew no one in this room. I was all alone left at a table that was supposed to be—a table of two.
Celine looked at me worriedly from across the table where I and Ethan stood, different questions in her gaze.
He stopped when he had gotten to where he wanted to be. He looked beautiful bathing in the attention of everyone in the room. The man literally has charisma oozing out of him.
All eyes were on him. He raised his tumbler filled almost to the brim with a glass of champagne, it looked like it would break in his large hand and the last few murmurs all around the room died down.
Clearing his throat “I thought this is something you all would like to know.”
“I want to raise a toast to finding my mate and my new Luna” he announced, setting the strong feelings I had towards him on fire completely and I only watched it burn to ashes.
I remembered Grandma telling me I was his and he was mine—but all her words seemed to fade away along with the faces of people as he uttered that one statement that can destroy me.
I couldn’t explain the pain that started up in my chest and ended up in my stomach. I gripped the table hand enough, my finger digging through the table clothes.
He made eye contact with me, staring at me head-on without blinking. He had brought me here to witness this. To shame me—it felt so much like a breakup or maybe a rejection when we weren’t even together.
I couldn’t let him know he had broken my heart and left me empty. Taking the glass of champagne I had been served earlier, I took a sip through numb lips.
I catch sight of people recording with their gadgets and it is only a matter of time before the thing spreads throughout the internet—Alpha Oliver had a girlfriend, and it was indeed the news everyone would like to know.
I hated the knife-in smile he had always sent to me. I had let him kiss me when I was only a second choice. I hated him, I hated that he didn't choose me. I couldn’t breathe, the cheers around the room made me dizzy. I teetered on my heels to prevent myself from falling.
“Look forward to our engagement party” people went forward to congratulate them—a new wave of hate crashing down on me. All the faces passed in a blur I couldn’t see straight—these people didn’t care about the person he had brought to the event, I had known that from the moment I had stepped foot into this hall.
The party goes on without a problem, but my attention wasn’t on anything but the pain searing through me. Dresses merge as one. The voice and compliment going to her made my ears ring—was this what it felt to be jealous? A scream was starting in my chest but there was no way I could let it escape. It would let them know the amount of pain too big for my body to handle.
Celine eyes were practically shooting daggers at the newly announced couple but it didn’t seem to have any effect as his blank expression was firmly in place.
Like she knew what I wanted, she stood before me looking at me with pity in her eyes” Come on, let’s get out of here” she nodded her head to the opened door.
I looked at them. They had kissed and that was the last straw for me. I fasten my pace on my way to the toilet, Celine running after me. I would have laughed at the way she struggled to walk in her heels if only I could feel the remaining of the food I had last eaten rising up to my throat.
I was halfway to the toilet when I couldn’t hold it anymore and emptied my breakfast in the nearest flower pot.
Celine moved closer holding my head back as I yelped and yelped trying to bring out the last of my food.
“There, there. . . there, let it all out,” she said, patting my back while I tried to catch my breath.
Tears started coming down then I broke out into a full sob, another passerby looking at me weirdly.
“I still don’t get how he could do this to me”. I cried, thank God for my waterproof mascara.
