Chapter 28 Don't bend the law for an omega?
Liam would curse himself for letting his guard down. When Skylar went missing, his mind was in turmoil, leaving him unable to think clearly. He swore that announcing Skylar as a traitor was an impulsive act taken while he was angry and distraught, and that he hadn’t given the consequences a second thought after Skylar returned.
Skylar was locked up in the palace prison, a facility designed for temporary detention in emergency situations. But Skylar’s status as a contract violator would remain a fact, and she’d have to wait for Estines’s law to pass judgment on her.
“I’m taking her out now!” Liam couldn’t stand these people anymore; they knew nothing yet acted as they pleased—even daring to defy him, an Alpha Enigma—a king!
Especially Selena, who grabbed Liam’s muscular arm as he was about to leave the room.
“You’re not taking her out, Alpha. She’s a prisoner!
Liam roughly brushed Selena’s hand aside. Speaking right in her face. “You know nothing, and you’re nobody here to dictate to me what I should and shouldn’t do!”
“Are you going to break your own kingdom’s laws?” Selena asked, cold and confident, “Are you going to destroy the structure that was built hundreds of years ago for a lowly omega and let all the people know about your secret relationship?”
Liam stopped, his face turning but not looking at Selena.
“Go ahead, and you’ll see a far worse end for that bitch of yours—ah!”
Selena’s words were cut short as a force tightened around her neck, choking her breath. Liam didn’t need to touch Selena to prove his power, and now the woman saw a fleeting glimpse of death in the form of Liam Rowan Spencer.
“Alpha—ah—stop.”
“Have you forgotten that I became Alpha for a reason? I could not only refuse to make you my bride, Selena; I could also hang your fucking body in the capital’s square to show them—what they’ll get when they defy me.”
Even so, Selena could still smile—as if dismissing Liam’s rage. Then the door swung open, and Benetta’s eyes widened in horror as she saw Selena’s body floating in the air, her face flushed as if she were being choked.
“Alpha! What are you doing!”
If Liam had already used his psychic powers, there was almost no way to stop him except to beg—or to counter him with equal force.
So when Benetta stood before Liam, her eyes told him to stop, and Liam finally released Selena. The woman’s body fell; she coughed on the cold floor before Benetta helped her up.
“Are you all right, Lady Selena?”
Selena couldn’t speak, but she nodded—assuring Benetta that she wasn’t that weak.
Benetta’s eyes flashed as she stared at her son.
“Are your thoughts so chaotic, Alpha? You could have killed your fiancée!”
“Yes, my mind is in chaos because I was too shocked to see someone so bold as to speak to me and forget their place!”
“I was only saying what I had to say, Alpha. Power doesn’t give you the right to flout Estines’ laws!” Selena finally spoke again, this time more forcefully. “If you insist on defending that omega, you’re the one making yourself look weak! You’re proving to your own clan members—to your entire people—that the Estines laws are very fragile!”
Liam’s eyes were still burning with rage, and as if the fuel she had poured on him wasn’t enough—Selena added.
“Omegas will never find a proper place within the palace, and if you still wish to defend that omega, you will repeat the same dark history that killed the previous Alpha—your father.”
Liam clenched his fist, not because of Selena, but because of the sense of loss that was haunting him once again.
Of course, Liam didn’t want that tragic history to repeat itself. The betrayal that claimed the lives of so many, including his father. Liam would never forget the grief and the disappointment over the Enigma Alpha’s fateful decision back then, which nearly destroyed a kingdom for a ridiculous reason.
‘Equality and justice for the Omegas’
Liam also convinced himself that he was doing this not because Skylar was an omega, but because he needed her to stay by his side. If only Skylar weren’t an omega, Liam would have made sure she didn’t run away from him; like making her a Luna and a queen for this kingdom. He’d do anything to keep Skylar from leaving again; even if it meant making her something important—even if Liam didn’t have to love her.
But because of Skylar’s status, Liam couldn’t act recklessly. Selena was right too; Liam couldn’t bend his own laws to defend Skylar, or everyone would oppose him and new problems would arise.
“Fuck ...,” he muttered under his breath, so frustrated but unable to lash out. A voice in his head kept telling him it was okay to let it all go; like letting a bomb explode, but he held back for fear that a mistake made in the heat of the moment would jeopardize Skylar’s position.
“What do you want?” Liam asked Selena.
Selena, as if she’d finally gotten what she wanted after whining all day, smiled.
“I just want Estines’ laws to be enforced as they should be; that woman will be punished.”
“I refuse exile.”
Selena almost protested, “Alpha—”
“That’s my final decision. You can’t refuse it. She’ll still work for me; wherever I place her, you have no right to protest.”
Selena swallowed hard, unshaken by the firmness of Liam’s decision to insist on keeping Skylar.
“Alright. I have no problem with that.” Selena glanced briefly at Benetta, as if signaling to leave. But she delivered her new proposal.
“You’re so determined to keep that woman close to you, Alpha. I’ll give you a solution so the public won’t suspect your forbidden relationship.”
Liam turned, staring sharply at Selena.
“She will be my servant.” Liam didn’t look angry, and for a moment thought it was the best solution for Skylar and himself. But his composure was threatened when Selena added.
“And I demand full rights over her. Whatever I do to her, you must not meddle."
