Chapter 43

Chapter 43
The late-night journey home had been surprisingly swift. The familiar streets blurred in a haze as Jackson focused on the comforting thought of his bed awaiting him. The cool night air sifted through the slightly cracked window, carrying a faint whisper of the ocean waves they had longed for. But even as he sank into the embrace of slumber, a heaviness settled on his chest, and a relentless weight mirrored the responsibilities piling up in his mind for the coming day.

Morning sunlight felt like a distant promise but cast an imposing shadow over Jackson’s thoughts. Work demands loomed ahead, monstrous like a mountain he could not ignore, with deadlines and expectations threatening to crush him beneath their weight. Yet, overshadowing these anxieties was the shimmering allure of a promise that lingered in the air, a shared dream woven between him and Zoe that seemed to glow with possibility.

Once Wyatt was finally dealt with an obstacle that felt like an unyielding storm cloud hovering over them, they would seize their chance to escape. The vision of returning to their island that cherished sanctuary so many miles away filled Jackson with a bittersweet yearning. It was a place brimming with memories of laughter and tranquility, a refuge where they could rekindle their spirits and reconnect with each other, away from the chaos of their everyday lives. With this thought, located warm and alive inside him, he gradually succumbed to the pull of sleep, clinging tightly to the hope of brighter days beyond the horizon.

He watched her as she moved around the room. “Go get a shower, love. I’ll unpack,” Jackson said, his voice a low rumble.

Zoe, her eyes sparkling with affection, rose onto her tiptoes, reaching for him. Her kiss was a gentle greeting at first but quickly deepened, igniting a fire within her. The pregnancy had amplified her desires, turning every touch and glance into an overwhelming need for Jackson. Her core throbbed a primal ache that demanded his attention.

Jackson chuckled against her lips, a knowing sound that vibrated through her. “Someone wants something,” he murmured, amusement dancing in his eyes.

A giggle escaped Zoe, her cheeks flushing crimson as she realized he could sense her arousal, the scent of her desire a potent invitation.

With tender care, Jackson guided her towards the bed, his movements deliberate and sensual. He peeled away her dress, his gaze never leaving hers, and gently lowered her onto the soft mattress. Settling between her legs, he inhaled deeply. “You smell so good,” he whispered, the words a caress against her skin as he tore away her underwear.

Even after all this time, Zoe couldn’t help but blush at his words, at the raw desire in his eyes. He pressed kisses along her inner thighs, each touch sending shivers of anticipation through her. Then, his tongue found her center, teasing, tasting, before latching onto her clit, sucking with a fervor that stole her breath.

Zoe threw her head back, a moan of pure pleasure escaping her lips. “Oh, Jackson,” she cried out, her body arching as he inserted a finger, joining the dance of his tongue. He moved in perfect sync, his touch both demanding and exquisitely tender, driving her relentlessly towards the edge. A strangled cry tore from her throat as she shattered, her climax a wave of pure, unadulterated bliss.

Climbing off the bed, Jackson’s eyes darkened with lingering passion. “Go take a shower,” he said, his voice husky. “We’ll finish this tomorrow when we’ve had more sleep.” He punctuated his words with a playful smack on her ass, earning a squeal of delight from Zoe.

After her shower, wrapped in her softest pajamas, Zoe crawled into bed, snuggling against Jackson’s chest. His steady heartbeat was a soothing rhythm against her ear. She couldn’t imagine a life without him, couldn’t fathom being more blessed than to have Jackson as her mate.

The fragile peace was shattered by the intrusion of the mind link. Jackson’s Beta’s voice, urgent and laced with concern, filled his thoughts. His cousin is here again.

A snarl rumbled in Jackson’s chest. He had come once before, a harbinger of doom, warning of Wyatt’s growing army. He better have information, Jackson snarled back, unwrapping himself from his mate and heading for the bathroom. He knew he couldn’t delay the inevitable any longer. He needed to tell Zoe about his family, about the darkness that haunted his past.

Making his way back into the bedroom, he found Zoe sitting on the edge of the bed, her growing belly a testament to their love, a radiant glow surrounding her. He found himself mesmerized by her beauty, by the strength and vulnerability that coexisted within her.

“You’re staring,” she said softly, a playful smile gracing her lips.

He hadn’t realized she had gotten up and walked towards him. She snaked her arms around his neck, pulling him down for a kiss, her touch sending a jolt of electricity through him. “I love when you look at me that way,” she whispered against his lips. “You make me feel like I’m the most beautiful woman in the world.”

“That’s because you are,” Jackson said, his voice thick with emotion.

The giggle that bubbled up from Zoe sent a wave of warmth through him, compelling him to kiss her again. He broke the kiss with reluctance, his expression hardening. “I have something I need to attend to.”

Zoe’s eyes narrowed, sensing the shift in his mood. “What’s going on?” she asked, her voice laced with concern.

“The rogue is back. He better have information about Wyatt.”

“I want to come,” Zoe said, her voice firm.

“No! If things go bad, I don’t want you in the way.”

“I can take care of myself,” Zoe retorted, her eyes flashing with determination. “Besides, who is this rogue, and why do you hate him so much?”

The question Jackson had dreaded had finally surfaced. He knew he couldn’t lie to her, not about this. His gaze dropped. “He’s my cousin,” he confessed, the words heavy with pain.

“He’s your what?” Zoe exclaimed, her voice rising in disbelief. “Why is your cousin a rogue? And why would you kill him? If you think I will stay here now, you’re crazy.”

Jackson cupped her face, his thumbs gently stroking her cheeks. He knew that once she was in this frame of mind, there was no reasoning with her. She was a strong, stubborn woman, and he loved her all the more for it.

He leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss on her forehead, his expression softening as he took a deep breath. “All right, I promise I’ll share everything with you once the meeting wraps up,” he said, his tone a mix of reassurance and concern. His eyes locked onto hers, a palpable urgency underlying his words. “But you need to stay close to me during this. If anything feels off, I want you to get out of there immediately,” he added, his hand instinctively moving to rub her belly, a protective gesture that conveyed both love and a deep-seated desire to keep her safe. His words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken fears and unyielding devotion.
