Chapter 42

Chapter 42
Jackson had meticulously planned a week-long getaway for himself and Zoe, presenting her with an elegant envelope containing their destination. Zoe’s heart fluttered with unbridled excitement. Given everything that had transpired, a vacation seemed the perfect remedy for their souls. The absence of news about Alpha Wyatt and their impending parenthood made this trip even more special. Jackson had lovingly dubbed it their combination honeymoon and babymoon, recognizing their need for an intimate escape. Little did they know, this journey would not only be a physical escape but also an emotional rollercoaster.
Zoe was perched on her plush bed, surrounded by a colorful array of clothes, with Katelynn and Erica by her side, offering their opinions and assistance. “I honestly don’t understand why you’re bothering with packing so many clothes,” Erica remarked with a mischievous glint. “I seriously doubt Jackson will let you wear them for long,” she added, wiggling her eyebrows suggestively, prompting a burst of laughter from Katelynn and Zoe. Zoe playfully threw her shirt at Erica, her cheeks flushing a deep shade of pink. She couldn’t deny the truth in Erica’s words, especially considering how her pregnancy hormones had affected her lately. Just last night, she had surprised Jackson in his office while checking on him. Something about his intoxicating scent had sent her hormones into overdrive. Before she knew it, he had her sprawled across his desk, his mouth expertly exploring her most intimate areas.
Zoe unconsciously clenched her thighs together, feeling the familiar throbbing sensation between her legs. Although her doctor had assured her that such heightened desires were perfectly normal during pregnancy, she still felt a twinge of embarrassment. However, she remembered how Jackson had tenderly kissed her flushed cheeks the previous night as she adjusted her nightgown, assuring her that he thoroughly enjoyed her passionate advances.
When the time came to leave, Zoe handed her carefully packed luggage to Jackson and settled into the car for their thirty-minute drive to the airport. As they approached the private plane Jackson had arranged for their journey to the beach house, Zoe felt her anxiety spike slightly. Though smaller than commercial planes, the aircraft was luxuriously appointed, promising a comfortable journey to their destination where a week of sun-soaked beaches and crystal-clear ocean waters awaited them. Overcome with excitement and comfort, Zoe fastened her seatbelt. She snuggled against Jackson’s warm body, quickly drifting into a peaceful slumber.
She awakened to the gentle sensation of Jackson lifting her from her seat. His deep voice whispered soothingly, encouraging her to return to sleep as he carefully placed them both in the waiting limousine. Zoe rubbed her eyes, now fully alert and buzzing with anticipation. “I can’t possibly go back to sleep now,” she declared with an infectious smile. Jackson reached across her body to secure her seatbelt, kissing her forehead tenderly. “That smile of yours is what I want to see every day,” he murmured affectionately. Zoe’s cheeks warmed with a blush as she gazed at her husband. “I love you more than words can express,” she began, her voice thick with emotion. “I’m grateful for everything you do for me. I know I don’t say it enough, but I am the luckiest woman in the world…” Her heartfelt declaration was interrupted by Jackson’s passionate kiss, one that conveyed every ounce of emotion he felt for her. It was a moment that would be etched in their memories forever, a testament to the depth of their love.
The beach house that awaited them was nothing short of spectacular. Its modern open floor plan was complemented by floor-to-ceiling windows that brought the outside world in. One could gaze directly at the magnificent ocean vista from the comfort of the plush couch in the front room. Jackson’s thoughtfulness was evident in every detail - he had arranged for the house to be fully stocked with provisions before their arrival, including an ample supply of orange juice, Zoe’s current pregnancy craving. As she took in their surroundings, Zoe couldn’t help but marvel at how blessed she was to have such a caring and attentive husband. In her eyes, Jackson was nothing short of a god. She knew with absolute certainty that she couldn’t possibly be any luckier than she was at that moment, watching the sunset paint the sky in brilliant hues while nestled in the arms of the man she loved, carrying their precious child beneath her heart.
After a refreshing dip in the ocean to cool off from the warm afternoon sun, Jackson made his way to the kitchen to prepare their evening meal. When Zoe offered assistance, he gently but firmly insisted she sit and relax. The sight of him moving confidently around the kitchen sparked her curiosity. “You can cook?” she asked, suddenly aware of how little she knew about Jackson’s formative years. Every attempt she had made to learn about his childhood had been met with resistance, his walls immediately going up at the mere mention of his past. This time, however, a small chuckle escaped his lips as he responded, “Yes, I can cook; my mother taught me how to cook.” The unexpected mention of his mother caught Zoe off guard. While she knew his parents had passed away, he had never voluntarily spoken about them before. Drawn to him, Zoe approached Jackson from behind, wrapping her arms around his muscular waist and pressing a tender kiss between his shoulder blades. “I hope you tell me more about your parents,” she whispered softly against his skin. In one fluid motion, Jackson spun around, lifting her onto the counter and capturing her lips in a passionate kiss. Though Zoe melted into the embrace, savoring the familiar taste of his lips, she recognized this for what it was - his practiced method of deflecting conversations he wasn’t ready to have.
The following two days passed in a blissful haze of swimming, sleeping, and intimate moments. Zoe wished she could freeze time and remain in this peaceful bubble forever, but reality had other plans. On the morning of the third day, their tranquil paradise was shattered by the sound of urgent voices. Zoe’s eyes fluttered open to find Jackson, clad only in shorts, engaged in an intense discussion with one of the guards in the kitchen. Despite her resistance to having security personnel present during their honeymoon, she now felt grateful for Jackson’s insistence on bringing them. The patrol had reported spotting rogues in the vicinity. While they hadn’t received any intelligence about Alpha Wyatt or his growing army of rebels, Zoe’s hope that this might be an unrelated incident was quickly dashed by Jackson’s reaction.
A deep, menacing growl rumbled from Jackson’s chest as he questioned the guard. “Are you sure that it was Wyatt?” he demanded, his voice thick with barely contained rage. The guard’s solemn nod confirmed their worst fears, prompting Jackson to act. He immediately began issuing rapid-fire orders, instructing everyone to prepare for immediate departure. His protective instincts in full force, Jackson determined they would be safer within the confines of their pack territory and set a deadline of one hour to evacuate the beach house.
Zoe hurried to their bedroom, her trembling hands gathering their belongings as tears rose. The weight of their reality came crashing down around her as she folded their clothes and packed their bags. Her heart ached with the unfairness of it all - why couldn’t she have an everyday life? Why couldn’t she and Jackson enjoy their honeymoon without the constant threat of danger looming over them? The tears she had been fighting finally spilled over, leaving wet trails down her cheeks as she continued packing. Their perfect escape, their brief moment of peace and normalcy, was cut short by the dangers they had hoped to leave behind. The sound of waves crashing against the shore, which had been so soothing just hours ago, now seemed to mock the tranquility they were forced to abandon. As she zipped up the last bag, Zoe took a final look around the beautiful beach house, trying to memorize every detail of what should have been their perfect honeymoon retreat but was now tainted by the harsh reality of their supernatural world.
