Chapter 265 - The Ravens Pack
Anastasia.
“What information do you have regarding them?” I asked.
“After your dad’s death, your mom did something strange,” Sebastian replied.
“Strange? Like what?”
“She signed some contracts two days after his death and gave away all the lands that your dad had in his name to your uncle. And I don’t understand what was the need for that.”
“Lands? You mean the nearby ones?”
“Yes, which your dad had bought 10 years ago.”
“Why would mom give them away to him? He’s only the dad’s beta. As there hadn’t been an Alpha chosen yet, Mom can’t give away her authority to someone of lesser rank than her.”
“Did her uncle ask for the authority of the lands?” Nikolai asked.
“I don’t know. That’s their insider issue. But, there’s more than just possession of lands. According to the information I’ve gathered, her uncle handles their business and makes vital decisions for their pack. His son is merely acting in his shadow. Most of the work is being done in his name. You can say he has become the authority now. And there had been many shady illegal trades under him and no one is aware of that.”
“Why would Uncle be doing something like this? He’s misusing his power just because there isn’t anyone responsible enough to stand in his place.”
“If his son is not capable then why would he become the Alpha?” Leon grunted. “I think they are using his name and someone else will be handling the power in the back.”
“Yes, as you thought,” Sebastian replied. “This is what I had assumed as well. His dad is no ordinary fellow, I’ve met him face to face. The eyes of a cold killer is what I see in him,” Sebastian explained.
I was lost in my tracks. I couldn’t understand what was going on anymore.
“Her mom was supposed to be mourning 2 days prior after her husband’s death. Why did she go away to give land to her husband’s Beta right after that? Usually, people do that after 2-3 months at least. Then, was she really mourning after all?” Nikolai remarks drawing our attention.
When I recalled how she was crying and blaming me, it gave me a reality check.
“But….she was crying so much for him. Why wouldn’t she be mourning? That’s her husband, there’s no way. Even for mom–“
“If she was acting in front of you, it was easy for her to make you believe in her,” Sebastian joked. “Cause you are quite gullible. You believe anyone easily.”
Acting? Mom was…acting? She wasn’t sad about Dad’s death after all? Then why did she always accuse me of his murder? Was that a show-off as well?
“Everything is so strange about your family, and its affairs,” Leon comments. “Have they always been like this?”
I clenched my fists unable to believe what I was hearing.
“No, they weren’t like this when Dad was alive. Things seem to have changed a lot after his death. No one is the same anymore. And I wasn’t there to witness anything, so we can only assume.”
“And according to our assumptions, your Mom is doing pretty well even after losing her husband. Almost too cheerful than what she’s supposed to be like. Which is something you should suspect,” Sebastian added in a serious tone. “Your sister’s marriage is done in a hurry as well. Maybe they just want to let them act as their face while they do their work in secret.”
What does all of this mean? What’s going on between Mom and Uncle? What do they want to achieve? They even kicked me out of my own home. What else do they need?
I can’t even claim my rights to property. Ryan and Freya will be the sole owners of everything.
“If the truth comes to light, you’ll be most hurt out of all,” Nikolai added, looking away.
What?
“What are you–“
“For now, I think you should stop having any weakness for your family. They are clearly in the bad here,” Sebastian suggested. “We’ll find out the truth tomorrow. Be prepared to face it when the time will call for it.”
“I agree with Sebastian,” Nikolai asserted. “Go to bed, we will leave also. Let’s go boys!”
“Goodnight, see you tomorrow,” Leon said, giving me a quick hug.
“Uh…goodnight.”
They left one by one and I went to sleep without pondering over it too much. Even if I did think about it, it would prove to be meaningless either way.
Morning came and after breakfast, we made our way towards the pack in one car.
“Are you worrying?” Sebastian asked, sitting at the front he was the one driving.
“Uh, no. Just feeling nervous that I have to face something which I wasn’t prepared for.”
“No need to feel nervous. I’m with you,” Leon said, sitting next to me.
“Thanks, Leon.”
“How long is the ride anyway? I’m getting bored,” Leon grunted.
“Just bear with it a little,” Nikolai replied.
We arrived by the afternoon and as planned, Leon and I would be going our ways while Sebastian would go to our packhouse to interrogate Mom and Uncle.
Nikolai will be entering searching the house thoroughly for any clues against them.
“So, what is our task again?” Leon asked, looking around.
“To search for the maid who found my earrings in Dad’s room,” I replied. “She used to live in the packhouse, but I heard she had quit after Dad’s death and is living somewhere around here. But, it’s hard to trace her down among so many houses here.”
“Why did she quit working? Any particular reason?”
“Uh…..I don’t know. Her wish, I guess? We’ll find it after seeing her in person.”
I spotted a young girl and approached her. After getting my answer we walked down the dark alley and suddenly came upon a decent-sized house for a previous maid.
“Is this where the maid lives?” He asked, looking around. “Pretty big place to live in it seems.”
“I’m surprised as well. Let’s see if she’s at home or not.”
I stood outside the gate and heard a voice from afar.
“Hurry up and finish this work. Can’t you move your hands a bit faster?”
This voice….this was her! Definitely.
The gate was half open so I just snuck inside while Leon came behind me. I saw that maid sitting on her lawn underneath a big umbrella while two women in worn-down clothes were pulling the weeds in her garden by hand.
She on the other hand was wearing a beautiful gown with her nails painted, sipping on her afternoon tea.
“She looks quite wealthy for a maid,” Leon whispered behind me.
“Uh, that is my question as well. Let’s go and ask her then,” I said, walking towards her direction.
She holds all the answers to my questions.
