Chapter 43 - A Suspicious Movement
Janine.
My eyes fluttered slowly, and someone shoved his face in front of me. The familiar scent filled my nostrils, I squinted my eyes at him, he was saying some words that I couldn’t hear, and the ringing in my ear didn’t stop for a while. It was just like the time I had an accident.
I closed my eyes and took in a deep breath.
“Janine, can you hear me?”
“Are okay?”
His hands touched my face and I reopened my eyes. “Do you need me to get the doctor for you?” He asked.
I blinked my eyes, staring at the worried face of Kaden.
“Should I get the doctor?” He asked again.
I shook my head slowly, there was no need for him to get the doctor.
I glanced around the room.
“You’re home. With me. You passed out at the hospital, you’ve been resting since last night.” He muttered and sighed.
The ringing in my ear stopped, and I was able to hear what Kaden was saying to him. He climbed the bed and pulled me into his arms. “I was fucking worried about you. Your grandpa told me Monica came to the hospital but I didn’t meet her. She must’ve heard that you visited the asylum.” His fingers stroke my hair. I snuggled close into his body with my head on his chest, his back leaned against the headboard, and he wrapped his other hand around me.
“I already asked the maid to prepare breakfast, it will be served soon. Breakfast will be brought here. How are you feeling?” He asked, and I nodded slowly.
While he went on to talk, all I did was listen to the sound of his voice, and how beautiful it sounded in my ears and I fell asleep in his arms.
When I woke, Kaden was sleeping beside me. I sighed and pulled myself from him a little.
He stirred but didn’t open his eyes, I came down from the bed and went to the bathroom to take a shower, there was breakfast on the table which had probably turned cold because it was almost lunchtime.
I came out of the bathroom and met Kaden seated on the bed and was staring keenly at his phone, he put the phone away when he noticed me. “I was going to hold you on the bed but you weren’t there, and that’s why I got up, I thought you’d gone out until I heard the shower running.” He stood up and made his way towards me. “Are you feeling better now?” He asked while leveling himself to my height. “...you didn’t wake me so we can shower together. I was waiting to run you a bath.”
I felt a warm rise on my cheek and nodded that I was feeling a lot better. He didn’t break eye contact, his intense gaze made me swallow.
He smiled and withdrew. “The concert is tonight, can you make it? I already picked a dress for you some days ago, and it’s gonna arrive today. If you don’t want to come, I’m not gonna force you, you need to get some rest.” He straightened himself and placed a kiss on my forehead. “I will leave you to get dressed.”
I held his arm before he left the room, and he stared at me. “What is it, Janine?”
I contemplated if I should say anything to him, and then shook my head and let go of his arm, saying nothing.
”I will give you time.” He kissed my cheeks this time and strolled out of the room. I turned towards the mirror the moment Kaden left the room, I wanted to find out the truth, and why Dad was in the same photo with my birth mother.
I have to pay a visit to the Baron’s house.
I got dressed and took a taxi to the Baron's home, I gave the taxi driver the house address which I wrote on a piece of paper.
I sent a message to Kaden that I needed to get something from the Baron’s house. He hasn’t seen my message yet because he hasn’t responded. He didn’t know when I left the house.
“The Ma’am isn’t home, she has gone for a meeting, Sir, Baron is in his study room. Should I let him know that you’re here?” A maid asked.
I shook my head.
I didn’t want him to know that I was in the house until I hadn’t gotten what I came here for, and I hoped I would be able to get them.
I opened the door of his bedroom slowly and shut the door behind me.
I hurried into his drawers, searching through his things, his study room was close to his bedroom and I tried to be as discreet as I could.
I was about to open the last chest of drawers but found it locked.
I would need a key to unlock it.
I searched the table, if any of the keys could open the drawers but there were none, it wasn’t among the rest of his keys.
I groaned mentally and palmed my forehead. I couldn’t think of any place where the key might be.
I saw his hair comb at the top of his wardrobe, I climbed a stool and stretched to get it. It was still wet, and there were strands of hair on it.
It wasn’t long before he used it.
Trusting my instincts, I removed some of the strands of hair from his comb before I heard his footsteps approaching the door.
I hastened up, there was not enough time to put the comb back at the place I took it from before the door opened, and I flung it towards the wardrobe, and could make it seem as if it had fallen off, and I clutched tight the strands of hair in my hand.
“Janine?” He was on his causal wear, and his brows were knotted in a puzzled frown. “What are you doing here?” His voice sounded calm but I swallowed fearfully and didn’t want him to come closer to me.
“You thought I was in here, and you came to look for me?” His eyes went over the room, I hadn’t gotten a chance to arrange it properly but I didn’t ransacked most of his things.
“Or you came to steal.” He grunted, his eyes blazing with anger.
I shook my head.
“Prove that you didn’t come to steal from me, and show me what’s in that hand you’re hiding behind your back.” He moved now, and I retreated my steps.
He can’t be my father.
I need a reason to doubt him, and there was some mixup somewhere.
“You want me to beat you? You came into the house, and the first thing you did was to move around like a thief.”
I shook my head, that I didn’t steal anything from him.
“I can never understand a mute girl like you! Now give me what you stole, you little thief.” He ordered.
I slipped the photo out of my shirt, and showed it to him, making sure I kept enough distance from him, I could hear my heart drumming against my ears even at the distance between us.
“How did you get that?” He sputtered, his voice sounding weak.
