Chapter 42 - I did not save her

Kaden.

I gave Janine some space to talk to her grandfather before I could come in, maybe that would be after she was done talking to him and I could go in and introduce myself as her mate.

I received a call from Gemma Lucas and left the door of the ward, the guards stood outside and I took a walk around the hospital with the phone on my ear.

“I told you that I would be busy today.” I said on the phone.

“I called to inform you about Jojo, Alpha. That was the reason I called. You were right that he will make a move.”

“Did he do anything suspicious?” I asked, and looked for a place to sit down.

“He went back to the Baron’s mansion Alpha.” Lucas said and I halted. “He went back there.”

“Yes, Alpha Kaden. I was the one who had followed him cautiously and saw him sneaking into the mansion without being seen, he stayed for about ten minutes before he came out.”

“Who did he meet?”

“Strangely, it was Stephane.”

I ran a finger through my hair, what was this?

Why was he going to the Baron’s mansion? There has to be a reason for it, and I have to find out what he had with them.

Jojo was a criminal in the pack, what he did affected Janine and he’s messing around with the family that Janine was adopted into.

Weird.

“What should I do, Alpha?”

“I need his records, everything about his past and his family, anything you can lay your hands on.”

“I will carry out your orders and do my research, Alpha.”

“Hold on…” I said when he was about to hang up on the phone.

I cleared my throat. “You said Janine saved you, how did she do that?” I have been curious but forgot to ask him about it.

“It was during the time I lost my mate, I had slipped into depression and had gotten drunk. She was coming from school, and I had walked into the road without looking, I wanted to get hit by the car. She ran after me, and pulled me away from getting hit by a truck. When she shook her head at me, I understood what she meant, that I shouldn’t do it, she cried with me and consoled me. That was three years ago.”

I was speechless when he was done speaking, I hadn’t expected to hear that from him.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t know you lost your mate.”

He chuckled. “It’s fine, Alpha.”

“I will get to work now and inform you of anything that I found out about Oscar Jojo.” He hung up on the phone, I exhaled deeply and tucked the phone into my pocket.

I went back into the hallway, searching for the ward of Janine’s grandfather and eventually found it. I knocked and pushed the door open. Janine was on the bed, and her grandpa was beside her, holding her hand.

I hurried towards the bed, panicking. “What happened to her?”

“She fainted.”

“Why?” I asked, and he looked at me, and sighed before taking his gaze back to Janine. “I think she got suffocated in the wardrobe where I hid her.”

“Why would you hide her in the wardrobe?”

“Monica was here, my son’s wife.” He squeezed Janine’s hand.

“The doctor has checked her, and you can take her home, you must be the Alpha’s son.”

I nodded curtly, and greeted him properly. He didn’t look sick to me, why was he kept here in an asylum and far away from the pack city.

“Take care of my Janine. I don’t know how long I will continue to fight, I am full of regret for everything that happened. She’s innocent in all of these, doesn’t deserve to suffer.”

He stretched his hand on the table and took a photo. “I found this with her, when I took her out of there, she has seen this photo, give it to her to keep it.” He placed the photo on my hand.

“A lot is happening outside the hospital that I am unaware of, but I want to protect my granddaughter in the way that I can. I feel sorry for her, this is my document. It’s very important, I want you to keep it safe.”

He was entrusting everything to him.

“What about your son?”

“Monica has him wrapped around her fingers. He won’t listen to me, she will come back here.”

“You’re not safe here. I will make arrangements for you to be taken away from here, she might come here and do something to you but what is she after?”

“Everything that we owed. She wants to take everything for herself and her daughter.”

He took a bottle of water and wanted to uncap it but his hands were shaking, I took the bottle from his hand and opened it for him.

He drank from the water. “I don’t know what’s happening most times, I do feel lost.” He muttered and kept the water on the table.

I saw him the day he came to visit Janine at the hospital, he didn’t glance my way. He just wanted to see Janine.

I stared at the photo in my hand.

It was a picture of Janine’s mom if I was correct, I’ve got to know because of the painting that I saw.

“Who is Janine’s Mom?”

His eyes gleamed with sadness, and he averted his gaze from my face.

“You know her, who is she? Why do you have a photo of Janine’s Mom?” I rasped.

He began shivering, and speaking gibberish, he walked into a corner of the room and started hitting his hand on his neck.

“…She died in the fire, I was there. I was at the place it happened, I hit Janine with a car. No, I didn’t save her. She screamed, Help! Help! I didn’t save her…” He mumbled at the corner of the room.

What was he saying?

He was interacting well, a while ago. Did something happen to him now?

“Who was it that you didn’t save?” I squatted before him and asked.

He shook his head at me and pointed to the picture in my hand, and began to scratch his head.

Janine’s Mom.

“Stay away from the patient!” A doctor barged into the room. I backed away from him, went to the bed and carried Janine in my arms.
