Part Fifty-Three
“Kane,” I spoke in his mind the moment I ported back into the house, “computer room.”
“Is that an order Alpha?” he asked me and yawned.
“Trust me, you want in on this,” I said to him.
Kane didn’t answer me but I knew he’d meet me. He was loyal when it mattered and only gave me shit about things that didn’t matter. When it came down to it, Kane always had my back and I wanted him with me when I did this.
“I’m here, what’s the emergency,” he asked me.
“The Council has asked for our protection and we’re going to take them to a safe location,” I said to him.
“You woke me up for babysitting duty?” he growled at me.
“We’re babysitting the men responsible for Damon’s death,” I said to him.
“What the fuck Griffin…. oh, I get it,” he said as realization dawned on him.
“I’m not an idiot Kane,” I said to him.
“Debatable, how did you manage this one?” he asked me.
“Seems Grant was murdered in his office and now they’re running scared,” I said.
“And who killed Grant?” he asked me flicking his tail up and down.
“I might have played a little too rough with him,” I said and he grinned at me.
“You blocked me out,” he said with another growl.
“The opportunity suddenly presented itself and if you weren’t so wrapped around Sierra the whole time, you would’ve been with me to enjoy it,” I said as his bloodlust levels rose.
“If you wrap yourself around her so can I,” he states sounding a little jealous.
“Are you coming or not?” I asked him.
“Did you just ask me that?” he said fiercely.
“Asshole,” I murmured.
“What are you going to tell Sierra?” he asked me.
“Shit, I’ll think of something,” I said to him.
Jett found me in the bedroom as I changed out of the suit and back into jeans with boots. I wanted to be comfortable when I started eliminating them. I didn’t pack anything since I still had some clothes at the house in Greenville, it was quiet and remote and that’s where I planned to take the Council members.
“Where are you going?” Jett asked me.
“I have a Council thing,” I said as I faced him.
“Stop bullshitting me Griff,” he said.
“I’m not.”
“There was no legislative meeting in New York, where were you really?” he asked me.
“Are you checking up on me now?” I asked him.
“You keep on disappearing, feeding us all some bullshit line about the Council and non-disclosures, what are you hiding?” he asked me.
“Nothing!” I said angrily.
“Are you cheating on Sierra?” he whispered with wide eyes.
“Don’t be an idiot Jett, of course I’m not cheating on her!” I said.
“Then tell me what the hell’s going on,” he said.
I felt bad for not including him. He really was my best friend, my brother, but I wouldn’t involve anyone with this. The vengeance was mine to take and I didn’t want to share it. Kane didn’t count, he was a part of me.
“I can’t tell you, but just trust me that everything will be fine,” I said to him.
“I do trust you Griff, I just wish you’d let me in,” he said.
“This is just something I need to do,” I told him.
“Whatever man,” Jett said and walked out of the room with his shoulders slightly slumped.
I ported back to New York without talking to Sierra because I wasn’t sure that I could lie to her more, not when she was looking me in the eye. Their heads turned when I appeared in the middle of the room and they all relaxed when they saw me.
“Ready to go?” I asked.
“Yes, we got some clothes and food and asked not to be disturbed under any circumstances,” Chester said as he picked up a bag and stepped toward me.
“Good, let’s go,” I said.
They followed me through the portal and even I felt slightly queasy when I opened a second portal while we were inside the other one to take us to Greenville. We stepped into bright sunshine and the air was cold, the snow had melted but it was still cold up here.
“Where are we?” Louis asked as we all stood in the clearing behind my house.
“Some place nobody would ever think to look for you,” I said with a smile.
My smile made them feel more at ease while I was thinking of ways to kill them. Kane stepped forward and led the way around the house to the front door which I unlocked and they all stepped inside. I switched the heating on and left the front door open.
“There are two guest bedrooms upstairs which you guys have to share, this is a safe space, not a hotel. Don’t venture into the forest and don’t go down to the lake, easiest way to be spotted, you have no idea who’s after you, let’s keep it that way,” I said.
“Is this your house Griffin?” Chester asked as he looked around.
“One of them yes, it’s remote and the nearest neighbour is about seven miles away, make yourselves at home but stay off the internet for now, we can’t afford any of you being traced,” I said.
“We all really appreciate this,” Phil said.
“Don’t thank me yet,” I said and smiled again.
I left them to look around and make themselves comfortable as I walked back to the clearing and took my phone out to call Sierra. She was going to be pissed but I had to do this, this was my one chance at having them all together.
“Hey,” she said sounding somewhat out of breath.
“I’m going to start this off by apologizing,” I said.
“Where are you?” she asked me instantly.
“There was a crises at the Council building. I’m escorting four members to a safe house, I didn’t tell Jett all this because it’s on a need to know basis, I promise I’ll be back as soon as I can,” I said to her.
“Griffin, we’re getting married in two days!” she said.
“And I won’t miss it for anything,” I said to her.
“Promise.”
“Sierra, I love you, the timing sucks I know, but I will not miss our ceremony for anything, I promise you that, nothing’s more important than you,” I said.
“I don’t like this Griff,” she said.
“Neither do I,” I said.
“Look after yourself, don’t get shot!” she said and I smiled.
“I’m just taking them to a safe house then I’m coming back,” I said.
“I love you Griffin,” she said.
“I love you too,” I said and put my phone away when she disconnected.
“Liar, liar,” Kane said as he walked towards me.
“Shut up, everything will be fine,” I said to him.
“I’m still not wearing that damn bow on Sunday,” he said and I laughed as we walked back to the house.
Kevin had taken over in the kitchen and he was busy cooking dinner for everyone as the rest of them sat in the living room. Kane watched Phil as he sat on his spot on the couch and mumbled something before going upstairs to our room.
“Sorry for taking over your kitchen, but you didn’t really strike me as someone that cooks,” Kevin said as I switched on the kettle to make coffee for myself.
“I don’t mind,” I said to him.
“I was really surprised that you agreed to this,” he said.
“To you cooking?” I asked and he smiled tentatively.
“Helping us,” he said.
“How so?” I asked him.
“With everything that happened to your father,” he said and glanced at me.
“The Council is there for a reason right, I was surprised at the harsh penalty, I had already told Chester that I would sit through an extraction to show exactly what happened that night,” I said to him.
“We were all surprised when Alpha Damon showed up, he didn’t offer any evidence just said he waged war against them and took full responsibility for the whole pack being killed,” he said.
“It is what it is right,” I said not wanting to discuss this with him anymore. I might just strangle him over the boiling pot of water.
I opted to eat dinner with Kane in the kitchen while the four of them ate in the living room, looking too relaxed for my taste. After dinner I boiled more water and made coffee for them all, adding a mild sedative that would help them sleep.
I sat in the dark living room for three hours with Kane as we talked about our plan and what we were going to do. The house had grown quiet and Sierra had texted me goodnight. I hadn’t spoken to Jett again and that was the main reason I hadn’t told Sierra that we were in Greenville. Jett wouldn’t stay away if he knew the truth, he’d blindly follow me on this path.
“Who’s first?” Kane asked me.
“Kevin McClaren,” I said.
“Why him? Why not Chester?” he asked.
“Kevin just lied to my face before dinner, I want Chester for last, I want him to know it’s me killing them and why. I want him afraid for his life,” I said.
“This is why I’ve stayed with you all these years,” Kane said licking his lips as I felt the bloodlust rise.
“And the steak,” I said as he chuckled.
“And the steak,” he said.
