Chapter 55: Part Fifty-Four

I took a knife from the block in the kitchen and walked slowly upstairs and stopped at the first guest room. Kevin and Phil were sharing the double bed with a pillow placed between them. Phil was snoring and they were both lying on their backs.

I walked right up to Kevin, one floorboard creaking but they didn’t even move in their sleep. I watched him for a few minutes as he lay there peacefully, not knowing that they willingly came with me to their deaths.

I slit his throat quietly and had my over his mouth and nose to minimize the noises he’d make as he struggled for air. He never even opened his eyes, the cut had severed the arteries and not just nicked them.

I removed my hand when I heard his heart stop and I stuck the knife deep into his chest, leaving it there. Kane was already on the bed when I closed the door behind me and took a shower to wash the blood off. Some of it had sprayed onto my face and my hand was covered as well.

I slept peacefully that night and I was awake but still in bed, waiting for Phil to wake up and discover Kevin dead next to him. I smiled and placed my hands under my head as a loud scream and cursing started in the guest room.

“Fuck! Shit! Griffin! Griffin!” he screamed and I stood up from the bed.

I rubbed my eyes as if I had just woken up and made my way into the guest room, stopping short as I looked down at Kevin’s body. Phil was shaking and he looked ready to wet himself, his face was ashen and he was shaking.

“Did you do this?” I yelled at Phil as he turned toward me with wide eyes.

“I swear Griffin, no! Kevin was my friend!” he said as he looked wide eyed at me.

“What’s all the shouting about?” Louis asked as he walked into the room, “holy shit Kevin!”

“Don’t touch him,” I said and Louis froze next to the bed.

“How the hell did this happen?” Louis asked me.

“I thought you said this place was safe!” Phil said sounding close to hysterics.

“Calm down, go wake Chester and we’ll all meet in the living room, I have a few theories,” I said and left them in the room.

“You know if this Alpha thing doesn’t work for you, you could always take up acting,” Kane said from the bed without opening his eyes.

“Piss off,” I said with a smile and headed to the bathroom for a quick shower.

I was in the living room downstairs fifteen minutes later with a cup of coffee when the three of them joined me. They all looked shaken and distraught and Kevin’s body was still in the bed upstairs. The three of them looked at me like I had all the answers.

“Can you explain how the hell this happened?” Chester asked me folding his arms over his chest.

“Can you?” I asked him.

“Why would I be able to explain anything?” he asked sounding somewhat pissed off.

“There are no fresh scents in the house which only tells me that no outsider was in here, one of you three killed Kevin,” I said as I looked at the shocked expressions on their faces.

“One of us?” Phil said as he looked at Chester and Louis.

“It wasn’t me,” I said as Phil backed away slightly and sat down on the couch.

“Why would one of us want to kill Kevin?” Chester asked.

“Maybe one of you is the inside person that got Grant killed as well, maybe whoever did this is also involved in some other illegal dealings, how the hell should I know?” I said.

“Can we have a moment alone?” Louis asked as he looked at me.

“Sure, watch your backs though, one of you is a killer,” I said and walked out onto the porch with Kane trailing behind me.

Kane shook his head lightly, “I’m going to check the perimeter,” I nodded my head and walked down to the jetty. I had an idea of how that conversation was going, they were going to blame Chester, because he was the one blackmailing them all.

I returned back to the house when Kane was done with his run, reporting nothing. Nobody ever came out here, so I wasn’t surprised at all. The front door was open now and they were all sitting in the living room just looking at each other.

“You guys okay?” I asked as I sat down on the recliner.

“Obviously we all say that none of us killed Kevin, this is a fucked up situation, how the hell do I stay here not knowing if I’m going to die next?” Louis said.

“I suggest that we all stay in the same room and Kane can stand guard tonight, make sure nobody steps out of line,” I said.

“It’s better than nothing,” Phil said.

“Maybe we should call in some warriors,” Chester said.

“And bring in more people that none of us trust?” Louis asked.

“Louis is right, I’m fairly certain that whoever killed Grant also killed Kevin and if his goal is to kill everyone involved with whatever this really is about, he’ll try again, because I strongly believe that the killer is in this room,” I said to them.

The three of them glanced at each other again and not once did they even consider that it was me. I was an Enforcer and to them that automatically made me the good guy. I wanted to smile at that, but I stopped myself because Kane was already enjoying this too much.

I needed to move things along. I was getting married tomorrow and I needed to be back in Newport by tonight. I had a plan and I wasn’t leaving here without them all being dead. You could cut the atmosphere with a knife when Chester finally stood up.

“I’m going to take a shower,” he announced and went upstairs. I waited until I heard the shower upstairs and turned towards Phil and Louis.

“I think it’s time you two told me the truth,” I said.

“What truth?” Louis asked me.

“Did you two even think about anybody but yourselves when Chester blackmailed you into murdering my father?” I asked them.

“How did….” Phil began and shut up as Louis glared at him.

“You killed Kevin,” Louis said as he looked me in the eye.

“Yes, I’m going to kill you too, did you really think you’d get away with it?” I asked him.

He opened his mouth and I moved swiftly as I pressed the gun against his head. Phil backed away from me in horror as he realized the truth of the situation. I aimed the second gun at Phil and shot him in the face. Louis screamed as Phil’s face exploded and I turned back to face him.

“I know everything Louis,” I whispered to him as the front door barged open and gunshots rang out. I was hit twice in the back as I fired my own gun towards the door and the man ducked outside again. Now I knew exactly who Williams was.

I shot Louis as he ran for the stairs and his body slumped down on the floor. I checked my magazines and peeked around the corner. I knew Chester wasn’t in the house anymore. He had probably left through a window the moment he turned the shower on.

The porch was clear and Kane came bounding around the other corner. The sky had turned orange and would set within the next twenty minutes. I hadn’t heard a car so I believed that Williams had left it somewhere and they were making their way there on foot.

“I found the car,” Kane said as he sniffed the air.

“Where?” I asked him.

“About a mile out next to the dirt road, next to the incline of rocks,” he said.

“Shit, they could be there already,” I said as I started towards the other side of the house.

“Not unless he has two spare tyres,” Kane said and I looked at him.

“You bit the tyres?” I asked him.

“Of course, let’s go, I’ve got their scents,” he said.

I holstered the guns and I followed Kane out through the trees as we started tracking them. They had moved in a semi straight line towards where Williams had left his car and following them was fairly easy although slightly painful with the two bullets still lodged in my back.

Kane and I hide in the foliage and watched as they reached the truck. Williams swore and kicked the mangled tyre as he looked around. Kane circled the rocky outcrop and I saw him move quickly. He was circling them now so that we were both on either side of them.

“What the hell do we do now?” Chester asked him.

“We head for the main road, flag down a car and get the hell out of here,” Williams said.

“What if he finds us?” Chester asked.

“Doubtful, I shot him twice in the back, he’s bleeding out as we speak,” Williams said.

I moved out of the foliage and kept the noise to a minimum as I stepped out from my cover and walked towards them. They stood with their backs to me and Chester stiffened first as he sensed me. He turned around and took a step backwards.

“It takes more than two bullets for me to bleed out,” I said loudly and Williams turned around.

“We meet again Griffin,” he said and raised the gun in my direction.

“You orchestrated this whole thing,” Chester said as he looked at me.

“It was fairly easy, you agreed to come with me so quickly, not telling anyone,” I said as Kane crept closer to Williams.

“The Council knows you were there, you won’t get away with this,” Chester said as he looked at Williams.

“How the hell did you become a hunter Rosco?” I asked him.

“I was recruited by Samantha’s father, right after the attack on your pack,” he said.

“It’s called a clowder, if you’re going to be killing supernatural beings at least know what they are and how to kill them properly,” I said.

“Like I care what you filth call yourselves,” he said.

“Nice friends you have Chester,” I said.

“Time for you to die now Griffin,” he said as Kane launched himself onto his back.

Rosco went down quickly under Kane’s weight and Chester’s face paled as Kane dragged him deeper into the trees and his screams rang out loudly around us. I looked at Chester and that was the moment he realized his defeat.

“Walk,” I said and motioned in the direction back to the house.

“Just kill me already, we both know I’m not leaving here alive,” Chester said.

“I thought we should talk first,” I said to him.

Rosco’s screams died down and I saw Chester shudder as Kane walked out of the trees licking the blood from his lips. Kane had blood almost everywhere and I knew I’d have to pull him into the shower before we ported back home later.
