Chapter 27
ALPHA LENNON
The only way to find out about the person who had taken the responsibility to look after Daphne was to inquire about it at our university. I patiently waited in my chair as my man dialed the dean's phone number. After two rings on the other side, it was received by the staff. Before my man could have uttered a word, I asked him to hand over the receiver to me.
"Yes, this is Alpha Lennon you are speaking to." I cleared my throat and greeted the person with an authoritative tone.
"Good afternoon, Alpha. How may I help you?" The response from the other side sounded more modest and counted as the girl speaking to his Alpha for the first time.
"I wanted to look after Daphne's records. Daphne Forster." Her name felt so foreign and distant as it rolled off my tongue in a plain manner.
"What would you like to know about the records?" the girl asked.
"It's just that I want to know who collected her records and documents from the university and where her admission has been transferred to." I tapped my boot impatiently on the floor as I heard her typing her name on the keyboard.
"Please give me a minute, Alpha," she replied before putting my call on hold again.
My heart excitedly beat against my ribs as my mind wandered off to the time when we had first attended the classes together. Daphne had been a little scared of the new place and the loud students. I would go and check up on her after every class to ensure she was safe and happy in the circle of her new little friends. We had always been there for each other, and no one could have separated us but my father. Because of just one wrong decision taken in haste, I lost my mate.
"Um, hello... " The voice on the other end came to life, and I found myself clutching the cord tightly as sudden emotions erupted in my heart.
"Where is she?" I asked without wasting another second.
"We are sorry, Alpha, but the person is not identifiable. I mean, we don't know who collected her records from the university." She was scared when she heard me growling with anger in my voice.
I angrily smashed the telephone against the wall, breaking it into several tiny pieces. My men took to their alert mode and didn't dare stop me while I destroyed my belongings in the chamber.
"Why is this happening to me? Why can't I find her?" I shouted as I grabbed one of my men by his collar.
"Listen. Listen very carefully. This time, find her out, or else you won't see the next day's sunshine!" I pushed him out of my way and shifted into my wolf to take a run outside the pack.
My paws hit the dry leaves on the ground, and I sprinted in the air to reach the highest point of the mountain. The cold air flew across my face, and I could hear soft murmurs coming from the pack members. My wolf wanted to howl in response to missing his mate, but I had to control my feral side because I didn't want anyone to know how badly I was missing her.
A small movement in the bush behind me caught my attention. The red-furred fox looked at me in horror, and my adrenaline rushed to dangerous levels. I leaped forward for it and managed to grab it by the throat. I tore its skin open and played with the contents inside the body. My wolf could breathe properly again after killing another animal.
After around twenty minutes of deep introspection, I was finally ready to head back to the pack. As I headed inside the chambers, my eyes caught Yvette coming out of her room. She seemed to have just taken a bath. Her face was glowing red, and her wet hair stuck to her shoulders. Her wet lingerie showed too much cleavage to be visible to the eyes of a man without a wolf. Whatever I told myself, I couldn't make myself leave the place while respecting her boundaries. Somehow, for me, she wasn't more than what Alaine was for me.
She was just a woman who could satisfy my hunger.
She noticed me after a few minutes of my staring at her face intently, and her lips spread into a warm smile. Even though the smile never reached the corners of her eyes, she pretended to be happy and normal again in front of everyone in the pack. Deep down, she was suffering. She was still suffering from the loss of her daughter, who died so suddenly and without a hint of the future.
I nodded to acknowledge her presence and walked down the hall to my chambers. It only took a few seconds for me to turn away from her, a wide smirk forming on my lips as I imagined myself fcking her pretty little mouth. The heat transferred to my lower region again, and I sighed heavily before entering my chamber.
Beta Jaime was telling a few soldiers about the new daily duties that he had assigned to the new batch of patrol units. We had already discussed guarding the pack borders to avoid any attack behind our backs. The men stood still when they noticed me, and Beta Jaime greeted me before explaining the new patrolling rules.
"Alpha Lennon. I have made the night shifts easily accessible to everyone so that no single group of soldiers is assigned the duties every consecutive night. We will guard the borders in groups at designated hours. For tonight as well as the next three consecutive nights, I will be with the soldiers to help them with the new rules."
I nodded as I listened intently to him.
But the most important thing that my head could grasp was that he wouldn't be in the chambers for the whole week, which meant Yvette would be sleeping alone in this cold weather, and I wouldn't like that if she suffered from any problem.
"What do you say, Alpha? Is the plan okay with you?" Beta Jaime asked, and I came out of my thoughts.
"Yes, it's wonderful. You should patrol at night," I replied with a vibrant smile.
