Chapter 45 Chapter 45
Martha's POV
"Good evening, sir," I greeted Mr. Elliott when he reached the table where I was enjoying my dinner.
"Evening, Martha. I am sorry to follow you here, but it's urgent that I come to see you," he said, his tone sounding polite even when I knew that he wasn't happy that I had broken off the wedding with Mark, which was supposed to happen the upcoming Saturday.
"It's fine, sir. Why are you here to see me?" I asked him, gesturing for him to have a seat.
As he sat across from me, Mr. Elliott said, "I brought the company's records for you to see, and to understand why the partners and shareholders are clamoring to withdraw. You need to forgive your stepmother so that she can return to the company until you are ready to lead."
I looked at the file that Mr. Elliott set on the table as he plopped down on the white plastic chair across from me.
"You don't have to bring this here. I will come over to the company by tomorrow to see it," I replied calmly, my eyes meeting his gaze as I ate my meal.
"For now, I will not understand what this report is. When I come to the office, I will. So you don't have to worry. It's just tomorrow," I added, meeting Mr. Elliott's stern gaze as I chewed the delicious meal in my mouth.
Mr. Elliott's jaw tightened, but he maintained a calm demeanor and asked, "Martha, you have no working experience. If you do not understand this report, how can you understand your father's company?" His voice was cold.
Before I could respond, Bolu stepped into the restaurant and looked around. When she spotted me, she hurried over to the table where I sat.
"Excuse me, sir. I am being polite with you. Just let me be for today. The company, like you called it, was my father's company. Not yours, not Sandra's, so let me deal with it when I am ready to. Excuse me," I replied sternly.
Mr. Elliott looked at me for a brief moment and rose to his feet to leave. "It's alright. We will see you tomorrow at the company." He turned and walked away, while I muttered, "Good."
"Martha!" Bolu exclaimed as she strode to the table to meet me. Her lips curled up as she wrapped her arms around me in a comforting hug. Her sweet banana scent filled my nostrils. "I have missed you so much."
"Me too," I replied, watching Bolu pull away from the hug before settling on the seat across me.
The soft music in the restaurant soothed my mood while I watched Mr. Elliott stride to meet Mark and Elena. Their gazes were on me, cold and glaring, but I didn't waste my time glaring back at them.
"How have you been, Martha?" Bolu's voice brought me back to reality.
Looking at her face, I responded, "I am fine," my lips curling in a smile.
"Are you sure? How about Mark? Is he troubling you now that you found out he was cheating on you with Elena?" She pressed, but I shook my head as I scooped more food into my mouth.
"Mark wouldn't dare to disturb me. The police gave him a strict warning." I finished my meal and picked up a bottle of water and drank. Its coolness soothed my body and cleared my throat.
"The police gave Mark and Elena stern warnings to avoid me, unless they risk joining Sandra in jail. So I am sure that's what is holding him back." I met Bolu's relieved gaze and said, "You need to keep away from me at a time like this so that they do not attack you or use you against me."
"What?" Bolu's eyes widened in shock. "Do you think they will stoop so low as to abduct me or you?"
"I don't know," I replied calmly. "I have a feeling they wouldn't just back off."
Bolu frowned and glanced around at the fear of getting abducted.
"I hope not. So how do we reach out if we don't check on each other?" She asked anxiously.
"We will get to chat. I think it's for the best now, until I have completely won the case."
Bolu breathed out and said, "This is serious. I just want everything to calm down and for you to move on. I never liked Mark."
I smiled and held her hands across the table. "I will be fine."
Just then, Mr. Weston stepped out of his office. His gaze landed on mine as I picked up a napkin to wipe my lips.
"I will be heading home now. I am actually living with my boss for the meantime," I whispered into Bolu's ear, skipping the fact that my boss was a werewolf.
"Wow!" Bolu's jaw dropped. Her lips curled and she said, "That sounds better. So we get to talk over the phone then. Take care, Martha."
"Alright." I looked away from Bolu as she stood up to leave the restaurant. She lived around, and I watched Mr. Weston approach me.
"Martha, are you set?" He asked when he strode to meet me.
Mark and Elena sat looking at us, even as they had finished their meals.
"Yes, boss," I replied with a smile.
"Let's go." Mr. Weston escorted me. He acted as my personal bodyguard, and I followed him out of the restaurant.
When we arrived at the car park, Mr. Weston pulled his car for me, and I got into the front seat. Just as Mark and Elena strode out of the restaurant and met us in the driveway.
As Mr. Weston shut the car door, he moved over to the other side, while Mark stood at the front of the restaurant glaring at me.
I smiled and looked away from them, waiting for Mr. Weston to enter the car. When he did, he shut the door, fastened his seatbelt, and ignited the car.
"Do you feel any better or still nervous?" Mr. Weston asked teasingly as he drove out of the parking lot.
"I am fine. Have you finished your work, sir? I don't want it to seem like I am troubling you," I said, looking over at him as he kept his gaze on the road path.
The road was free, and I didn't feel that uneasiness again.
"You are never a burden to me to me, Martha. Know this and understand that I did not lie to you about liking you. I feel happy doing this. My wolf and I."
I trembled at the reminder that he was a werewolf. How could I forget that?
"Alright," I muttered, my voice low as I reclined in the car seat, watching the road.
The car ride was silent until Mr. Weston reached his house. When he did, he waited for the gatekeeper to unlock the gate. The magnificent black gate swung open, and Mr. Weston pulled up in the driveway.
"I already contacted the bodyguard team. Tomorrow I will assign you a new bodyguard," Mr. Weston said after he finished parking his car.
"Sir, I haven't gotten the money or taken over my father's company yet," I quickly replied, knowing that I hadn't gone to the bank to withdraw the cash.
Mr. Weston smiled and raised his hand to touch my cheek. "I cannot sit comfortably in my office and allow anyone to kidnap you. So I hired the bodyguard for you. You don't have to worry about paying him."
Meeting Mr. Weston's intense gaze on me, I asked, "Sir, is the bodyguard a human or a werewolf?"
Mr. Weston laughed and replied, "A human."
