Chapter 40 Chapter 40

Chapter 40 Chapter 40
JASPER'S POV:

When I walked into the women's clothing store, most of the female shoppers stopped and glanced at my brother and me. Their eyes widened in surprise, and they gossiped amongst themselves.

"Oh my goodness. Are they gay? Why would a man bring his fellow man shopping?"

"Maybe they are gay. Besides, King Kendrick supports homosexual relationships," the two shoppers gossiped, and another lady standing next to them with some clothes in her arms cooed. "They are so handsome. I haven't seen men like them in a while. God made a mistake creating them as men when they were supposed to be women."

"Hmph." My eyes narrowed at the women blushing at us before a saleswoman hurried over.

"What do you want, sir?" She asked, maintaining a professional tone.

"Women's clothes," my brother replied, and some of the patrons gasped.

"I knew it. He is gay."

My brother only shook his head, but his gaze remained on the clerk attending to him. She donned a blue top and brown skirt, and though she was a young lady, she didn't lust after us, only smiling.

"I am not gay. I want to buy a present for my girlfriend. Is it a crime for men to come into a women's store?" Steven asked before the gossiping ladies looked relieved and continued with their selection.

"No, sir. Our store is open to both men and women," the clerk clarified.

"Alright. Let me see the dresses available. My girlfriend is a bit thick-skinned, tall, and slender. She loves orange and red dresses—something that makes her look flashy," he described Zoey's preference, and my heart ached at the thought of what color I believed Martha liked.

I recalled that Martha loved wearing blue outfits. I decided to buy a blue dress for her. Besides, she had asked me for some clothes before Tina lent her some of her smaller dresses.

I moved to select some dresses for Martha, and I knew that Tina was going to make a fuss. Though Tina was not my mate, she was aware that Martha had slept with a werewolf—even though Tina wasn't sure if it was Alpha Andrew or just another Alpha from another pack. But she was aware that I had an interest in Martha. So I wanted to bribe her to ensure that she didn't spill anything to my brother or inform Alpha Andrew either.

"How many dresses are you picking out?" Steven asked when he saw me selecting two different sizes of dresses.

"I have two friends. So it's not your business," I replied dismissively, and my brother hummed.

"What? Jasper, you cannot mean to tell me that you have two girlfriends, yet I am still trying to find time for one," he groaned, and I smiled.

"Focus on your duties. Your job is to serve the Alpha."

"Alright." My brother didn't say much. When we finished selecting, he waited for the clerk to pick out the dresses that he assumed Zoey would like.

I paid for all the purchases with my credit card, which I pulled out of my trousers pocket, and we set out to leave the store.

When we stepped out, the sun had set and the clouds gathered, but the rain didn't fall.

Steven shifted his gaze to mine and said, "I have to be on my way now, brother. We will get there late."

"Alright. Take care," I waved at him as his taxi arrived to take him to the seaport.

I sighed and went back to my car, stuffing all the things I had shopped for in the trunk. When I moved to get into the driver's seat, I heard someone calling my name.

As I glanced backward to see who it was, I spotted Dr. Tina rushing ahead to meet me.

"Jasper, what brings you here? I thought I saw someone who resembled Beta Steven just now," she asked when she reached where I stood.

Tina wore a brown dress that accentuated her figure. I could feel the human men's eyes on her as she had a sexy, curvy figure.

"Yeah. He came to retrieve something. So he is gone."

"Why didn't you call me to say hello to him?" She asked, groaning like a child, and I assured her.

"Next time. You know that Alpha Andrew ordered him back immediately."

"Alright. So what are you doing here? I saw you coming out of that store. Did you go to shop for Martha? Are you serious about her? You know that it's against pack law to marry a human. You will never take her home."

"I know. I am not getting married to Martha yet. I only shopped for some dresses for her because I saw that she doesn't have many clothes."

Tina crossed her arms over her chest and pouted. "How about me? Since we came to this city five years ago, you haven't bought any gifts for me."

I sighed and pulled a gift bag from my rear seat.

"These are for you. I know you are going to make a fuss, so I already bought you some gifts," I said before handing the gifts to her.

Tina's eyes widened in excitement, before she jumped up and hugged me firmly. "Thanks, Jasper." She pecked my left cheek before I could stop her.

Though my wolf felt happy, I wasn't pleased about the peck.

"Tina, we are not mates. I am only doing this as a friend," I corrected her as she was a young woman, a werewolf, and she wanted me to marry her. But I simply didn't feel that way about her.

"I know. I got too excited. Thank you, Jasper." She purred, happy about the gifts.

"Alright. What brought you here?" I asked her when I studied her face. I wondered—was she stalking me?

"I came to shop for some clothes too and some groceries. But I saw you here, so I hurried over," she explained, and I nodded.

"That's fine. You can carry on with your task," I said before I turned to enter my car. I remembered and called her back.

"Tina," I said, my tone shifting to a serious one.

"What is it?" She asked, looking at me with confusion and worry on her face.

"If Steven asks you about my human friend, do not tell him anything about Martha or send her photo to him." My voice was serious, and she asked, "Why?"

"He doesn't like humans and he believes she cannot be trusted with our real identity. So you mustn't tell him. Tell him I told you not to tell him anything."

"Alright. But Martha is a good girl. I don't think she will reveal our secret. Are you serious about her?" Tina asked, a wave of melancholy crossing over her features as she frowned.

"I don't know. But Ivan and I like her."

Tina appeared hurt to hear me say that. She turned away. "Fine. Do whatever you like. I won't tell Steven anything. Let's hope that Martha doesn't betray you."

"Good," I replied, watching Tina stride away. I knew that she loved me, but she wasn't my mate. Maybe if we were in the pack, Tina would have found her real mate. But she had been attracted to me for a very long time.

Sighing, I got into my car and drove off to my restaurant as I was relieved that my brother had gone back to the pack.
