CHAPTER 25

CHAPTER 25
I wanted to ring Lark to get me from school, or possibly get a cab. I needed to get home soon, because I rang Rory thrice and he wasn't taking his phone.

“Lay, you should be chill.” Skai said to me.

“Chill? No, Skai. I'm an Alpha. I cannot be chill when there's probably something going on and I have no idea.”

Rob looked at me, “An Alpha?”

My breath caught. I wasn't about exposing myself to Rob and Dylan. It wasn't something I think I wanted to do. Of course I knew most people were aware that werewolves cohabited in the city, but they hardly knew which was which.

Only Skai knew I was a werewolf, and I wanted it to remain that way. Who knows? What if Rob and Dylan see me differently when they find out I was a werewolf? Worse off, an alpha. Then, the most shaking of it, what will be Tatum's reaction to knowing I was werewolf and an Alpha at that?

Dylan hit me off my thoughts when he said, “I just booked a ride for you. You could rush home if there's an emergency.”

“Thank you so much, guys.” I said, faking a smile. Then they got up, leading me outside to wait for my ride. Funny enough, Tatum didn't stand up, he still didn't say a word to me. And I felt sad about it. How pathetic!

“Would you want us to join you?” Dylan asked.

I shook my head, “No, thank you. That's so thoughtful of you. It's a family matter.”

Skai squeezed my hands as I got into the car, it was our normal way of saying, “I've got you, Lay. Call me when you can.”

When I got home, a young girl met me by the door and told me that the elders had requested my presence. “Urgh! Not again.” I murmured.

When I got to the council, I knew everything wasn't right when I saw their faces. Rory was seated by the side too. “What the heck has this fool done?” I said to myself.

“Alpha Alaya.” One of the elders started. “This meeting is supposed to be brief because we still have an emergency at hand.”

An emergency? What emergency? I was confused, I couldn't place what was going on.

I remained mute and allowed him to continue, “we have spoken about choosing the pack or college severally, yet—”

“This conversation again?” I cut in. “I'm doing my best to balance both of them.”

“You cannot balance both of them, Alaya.” One of the elders shot back. “Balancing college with leading a pack is what you think you've been doing. How do you think you can handle this when your mate is sick, yet you have no idea. Or did you have an idea, and still him there?”

Then it struck. Dolphus. What happened to him? Gosh! I had a feeling but I rushed up to college because I was late.

At that point, I didn't know what to say. I just looked at them in shame.

“Didn't you feel that Dolphus wasn't alright? Both of you are mates, so you should have sensed it, felt it, something….” Rory said.

I swear that I could have slit Rory in the throat for opening his mouth, but he was right. If we were actually mates, I should have felt something. But I didn't feel anything in this case. Well, maybe I was concerned in the morning as to why he didn't come check on me, but I didn't feel what I should have felt if he was actually my mate.

“Can I see him, please?” I asked softly.

One other elder looked at him for a while, then said, “You can. Alaya, we just want the best for the pack and leading a pack begins with leading yourself. You and Dolphus are one, you should lead well there. Again, I'll appeal that you quit college and focus on the pack.”

“I support that notion.” Rory said.

My gaze moved from the elders to Rory, and it switched to a glare when it got to him. He was just a thirsty idiot sometimes, but maybe he cared for the pack, just a bit.

“Can I see my Dolphus?” I said.

Even I couldn't believe that I called Dolphus mine at that point, but maybe he was mine actually.

When I got to his room, I saw him lay there quietly. He looked pale. I moved to the side of his bed and held his hands in mine.

“Dolphus, I'm sorry.” I said. It wasn't the time to be emotional, but I was at that point.

This was the point where I might have had to agree with elders that maybe I just couldn't handle the back, or maybe I'm just a girl and girls couldn't be leaders. Or maybe I'm just as worthless in the pack as the thought, because I'm halfblood. How pathetic!

“It's fine, Alaya. It's not your fault.” He said. His voice was shaking and I could feel that he was sick from the inside.

My wolf could feel his, and this was the first time it ever happened. It felt like my wolf wanted to come out and hold his. My wolf could feel his whimpering.

“What happened?” I asked, my voice full.of concern. “You're sick from your wolf out.”

“How did you know that?” He asked with a grin.

“Because I'm Alpha Alaya.”

She tried to sit up, and I helped it, propping him up with a pillow. He gave me an eye, signaling that he wanted us to be alone. So, I signalled the helpers in the room to excuse us.

“Talk to me, Dolphus. What happened? You were okay yesterday.”

He coughed, then started, “I followed someone into the woods yesterday. It was crazy but I had to. I didn't know who exactly it was, so I followed so that I could find out who it was. When he found out I was following him, he wolfed and fought the wolf out of me. I almost died last night, Alaya.”

My heart skipped for a beat, that it forgot how to beat. That had not happened in our world in a while. Our wolves were always in peace. We barely fought ourselves.

“You don't know this person?” I asked.

He shook his head. “He looked like Rory from behind, but his wolf wasn't Rory's. I think I know Rory's wolf well enough.”

I got up from the bed, and paced back and forth in the room. “Who could it have been?” I asked no one in particular.

“No one has
to know this. But we've got to find out who did this to you, Dolph.” I said to him.
