Chapter 72 Who Is Your Teacher
Matthew squinted at Emily, a bit thrown off.
He'd pictured Med Mastermind as some wise, middle-aged dude, but nope, it was a woman. And aside from her white coat, nothing screamed "doctor" about her.
Especially that cute mask she had on—it was just too much.
"Are you Med Mastermind?" Matthew asked, unsure.
Emily tilted her head. "Yep. Do I not look the part?"
Her masks were custom-made, complete with a voice modulator, making her voice all raspy and deep, just like when she called him before.
Matthew hesitated at the sound of her voice. It was odd for a woman to sound like that, and it threw him off a bit.
"Let's go. Isn't this urgent?" Emily shot Matthew a glance, dropping her usual demeanor for a cold, distant vibe, though she kept sneaking glances at him.
Matthew found her gaze weird but didn't question it. He always remembered Med Mastermind's rules. He motioned for her to go ahead.
Emily nodded and led the way, hopping onto the helicopter, with Matthew right behind her.
The other soldiers with Matthew were shocked to see Med Mastermind was a woman.
But being soldiers, they were all about following orders, so they pushed down their doubts and got on the helicopter. Their job was to protect Matthew and make sure Med Mastermind got back to the base safely.
On the helicopter, Emily and Matthew went over the patient's condition again. Once Emily had a rough idea, she closed her eyes for a quick nap.
Their destination wasn't far, but since it was a top-secret spot, the helicopter was the way to go.
Matthew sat nearby, sneaking glances at Emily. Med Mastermind didn't look old; from her eyes and smooth hands, she seemed to be in her early twenties.
He thought, 'How did she become such a medical genius?'
Since he got into the medical field, Med Mastermind had been the most famous and mysterious doctor. He'd heard the name for over ten years, meaning Med Mastermind was just a kid ten years ago.
He'd always admired Med Mastermind. Finding out she was around his age, or even younger, made him super curious about her.
Matthew's staring was so obvious that Emily couldn't ignore it. Without opening her eyes, she asked, "Got something you wanna ask?"
Caught in the act, Matthew felt awkward and coughed. "Can I ask anything?"
Emily was quiet for a moment. "Sure. but I might not answer if I don't want to."
Matthew had a ton of questions. After thinking for a bit, he asked, "Who's your teacher?"
She was so good at medical stuff, her teacher had to be a big deal.
Emily's expression shifted slightly. She opened her eyes and looked at Matthew, seeing his curious face. She pursed her lips.
Seeing her reaction, Matthew thought he'd messed up and was about to change the subject when he heard her raspy voice, "I didn't have a teacher; I taught myself."
Matthew's eyes went wide as he stared at Emily, thinking, 'How can she be self-taught to this level?'
Emily didn't elaborate and clearly didn't feel like explaining.
The helicopter ride got awkwardly quiet. Matthew scratched his head and switched the topic to medicine.
When they talked about medicine, Emily's tone stayed pretty flat, but Matthew could tell she was a bit more into it.
Soon enough, the helicopter landed.
Before it even fully touched down, Emily heard the sound of soldiers marching outside. She raised an eyebrow and looked out the window, seeing a bunch of soldiers jogging to the helicopter and lining up neatly, waiting for them to get off.
As soon as Emily stepped out, she was hit with a loud, "Welcome, Med Mastermind!"
Emily frowned. "Let's go! Time's ticking."
Steven walked up to Matthew, his voice a bit stiff, "Is this Med Mastermind?"
Matthew nodded.
"But how can it be a woman?" Steven clearly didn't buy it. "Mr. Johnson, you need to take this seriously. The patient can't wait."
Matthew shot Steven a cold look. "I'm serious. She is Med Mastermind."
After their chat on the helicopter, it was clear to Matthew that Med Mastermind's medical knowledge was on par with his own.
Even if she wasn't Med Mastermind, her assistance in the surgery significantly increased the patient's chances of survival.
Steven still looked skeptical, but seeing Matthew's serious face, he couldn't help but eye Emily with more curiosity. "Med Mastermind, this way, please."
"Yes, time is tight. Take me to the patient first," Emily said, noting their reactions but not caring. She was used to it.
Hearing her voice, Steven perked up. It was exactly like the voice on the phone that day.
But the mix of a young girl's figure, an old woman's voice, and a cute mask was just weird.
"Steven, I'll take responsibility if anything goes wrong," Matthew said, noticing Steven's hesitation.
Hearing this, both Emily and Steven looked at him.
"Understood. Follow me," Steven said, knowing the urgency and not wanting to delay any further, especially with Matthew's assurance.
Soon, they reached the patient's ward.
The room was dark and sealed tight, with only a ventilation machine humming away.
As they walked in, a dim light flicked on.
Emily could now see the patient clearly. A man with his head wrapped in bandages lay weakly on the bed.
The room was cluttered with brain CT scans and various medical reports.
Emily sat by the bed, carefully checking his pulse. As time passed, her expression grew more serious.
Matthew watched from the side, holding his breath, not daring to interrupt.
Steven could no longer contain himself and finally broke the tense silence, asking, "Med Mastermind, how is he?"
Emily didn't respond. Steven was about to speak again when Matthew's look stopped him.
Steven was anxious, but since Matthew hadn't spoken, he kept quiet.
His eyes stayed on the patient. If the man didn't wake up, all their previous plans would be for nothing.
