Chapter 149

Chapter 149

Sophia was furious. She thought hard but couldn't figure out who she had offended or what she had done wrong to make someone so angry that they would sell her off to a remote mountain village.

"How can you two do this? Making money by trafficking people? Don't you know this is illegal? And don't you have children or grandchildren? Why can't you do something good for them? Doing such terrible things will bring punishment sooner or later."

The more Sophia cursed, the happier these two men seemed.

"Punishment? There are tons of people in our line of work, and I haven't seen anyone get punished. Besides, in this big world, there are all kinds of businesses. We make money with our own skills - who are you to say we'll be punished?"

Sophia was speechless hearing their twisted logic. They were doing something illegal yet acting so righteous about it.

"Tell me, how much did the person who hired you pay? I'll pay double right now. Just let me go, and I'll give you whatever you want."

Sophia figured since they were only in it for the money, she could use money to keep them calm.

No matter what, she absolutely couldn't go to the mountains. She had seen things online about those mountain villages - once you go in, you can never get out.

Thinking about this made Sophia shudder. If she really got trapped in the mountains for life, it would be worse than death!

"Stop trying to trick us. We've done many deals, and everyone we've caught tries this same trick. I don't care if you have money or not. I just want to complete each job and get paid. I never back out halfway, otherwise who would hire us in the future?"

Sophia found it strange that such shady business could have its own rules, and that this illegal activity had become an actual industry.

"Let me tell you both - if you really do sell me to the mountains, I won't just accept it. If I'm going to die, at least let me die knowing the truth. I just want to know who's behind this."

Sophia struggled unwillingly. She couldn't understand who she had offended. Could it be the Brown family behind this?

Although she and Veda never got along, she didn't think Veda would go this far, at least because she'd worry about what Hayden would think.

After all, she still had value at the Brown Group. If she died, Hayden would lose an industry expert and the company's profits would drop sharply.

Veda might compete with her jealously, but she wasn't smart enough to pull this off.

Thinking this through, Sophia narrowed her eyes slightly. Could it be Hazel?

Sophia's heart sank. Hazel was indeed more vicious than Veda, but over the years she had only fought with her over small things. Could their recent arguments have made Hazel want to kill her?

Sophia couldn't figure out who would do such a thing.

Just then, she heard someone calling her name in the distance.

"Sophia... Sophia..."

Hearing someone call for her, Sophia immediately got excited and struggled even harder.

"Here! I'm in the cattle shed!"

Hearing Sophia shouting, the two men got startled. They quickly covered Sophia's mouth with their hands.

"Shut up! Do you want to die? If you dare bring people here, I'll kill you right now."

Despite the warning, Sophia wasn't afraid. Even with her mouth covered, she kept making muffled sounds.

If she was going to be sold to the mountains anyway, life would be worse than death. Even if these two killed her now, she had to call for help.

As long as whoever was looking for her could hear, she'd have a chance to survive.

But no matter how hard Sophia struggled, she couldn't match the strength of these two men. When Sophia was too tired to shout anymore, she had a sudden idea. While the two men were restraining her, she lifted her foot and kicked a cow's rear end.

She kicked hard. The cow suddenly bellowed and turned its big head to look at the three of them.

Sophia turned to look at one of the men beside her - he was wearing red clothes. Sophia suddenly thought of a good plan. This was a cattle shed, and cows react strongly to red things.

With this idea, Sophia desperately pulled at the man in red clothes next to her. The more the man moved, the more it attracted the cow's attention.

The cow was already on alert after being kicked. Now with this man moving around in front of it, the cow became aggressive.

The old cow lowered its head, raised its horns, and charged at the man.

Sophia felt her chance had come. She pushed hard, shoving the man to the side. Sure enough, the cow took the opportunity to gore him with its horns, sending him flying.

Cows are very strong. The man was thrown several feet away, and his screams echoed throughout the cattle shed, immediately attracting the people who were searching for Sophia on the road.

Sophia took the chance to shout loudly.

"I'm here! Help! Evelyn, I'm here!"

At that moment, James was searching for Sophia on the village road when he suddenly saw a man fly out of the cattle shed and land heavily at his feet.

Although the man was screaming miserably and rolling on the ground in pain, James had no interest in getting involved. His mind was focused on calling Sophia's name.

Just then, he suddenly heard a response. The voice was faint, but he was absolutely certain it was Sophia's voice.

"Sophia, is that you? Where are you?"

Sophia kept responding, but her voice got weaker each time. She was running out of strength, and the man beside her kept pulling her toward the small wooden house.

The man in red had been gored by the cow and thrown out, so the man beside Sophia panicked.

He just wanted to quickly drag Sophia back into the small wooden house and then disguise himself as a villager.

Although there was noise all around, Sophia could clearly hear James's voice. For some reason, hearing James's voice immediately made her feel secure.

She felt she was truly saved this time. James's voice seemed to give her unprecedented strength. She pushed hard, and the man beside her was shoved aside.
