Chapter 38 Arthur's Sudden Concern
Chapter 38 Arthur's Sudden Concern
Jennifer was so engrossed in her conversation with Melissa that she didn't notice Ethan passing by the coffee shop.
Ethan quickly found Beatrice at the agreed location.
Beatrice handed the bag to Ethan: "What do you think about giving this bag to your mom as a birthday gift?"
The bag wasn't something Beatrice bought for herself. Although she still had some money, she didn't care much about material things and would never spend two hundred thousand on a bag.
"I don't know much about these things, that's why I asked for your help."
"Don't mention it. I happened to be out shopping with Melissa today anyway, so it was no trouble."
At the mention of Melissa, Ethan's expression changed slightly. He told Beatrice about what he saw when he passed by the coffee shop earlier.
Beatrice paused: "Why would Melissa be with Jennifer? Are you sure you didn't see wrong?"
"I'm absolutely certain. Melissa is usually so thrifty, there's no way she'd go to such an expensive coffee shop. Jennifer must have been treating her. I suspect she's up to no good."
"Thanks for telling me. I'll keep a closer eye on Melissa from now on."
Given the previous lab explosion incident, Beatrice immediately guessed that Jennifer was planning to use the same trick again—bribing Melissa to set her up.
Beatrice didn't take Jennifer's cheap tricks seriously at all.
"Do you think if Melissa really was bribed by Jennifer to set you up, could they succeed?"
Beatrice felt like Ethan was underestimating her a bit.
"If I didn't know about it, that would be one thing. But now that I do, if they still succeed, I might as well stop working for Mr. Morris."
Beatrice's only concern now was whether Melissa, who was usually so innocent and kind and got along well with her, would really be bribed by Jennifer to set her up.
From then on, Beatrice started paying extra attention to Melissa and the people around her.
Not just in the lab—even after work when walking on the street, she would watch for anyone suspicious nearby.
After all, she'd been kidnapped before. That crazy woman Jennifer was capable of anything once she held a grudge.
About a week later, just when Beatrice was wondering if she was being too paranoid and was about to relax her guard a bit, she really was being followed.
From the moment she left home for the lab that morning, she could clearly sense a man following her at a distance.
Beatrice stayed calm on the surface. She secretly took out her phone, turned on the front camera, and pretended to check her makeup while secretly photographing the man behind her.
After doing this, Beatrice didn't rush to call the police. After all, there were so many people on the street, he definitely wouldn't dare do anything. And if he was just going the same way, that would be awkward.
After a busy day at the lab, when she got off work, the man appeared again.
Beatrice stopped in a crowded area and looked coldly at the man: "Who are you? Why are you following me?"
Caught, the man looked embarrassed: "Miss, I think you've misunderstood. We're just going the same way."
"Stop pretending. You've been following me since this morning. Do I need to call the police and check the surveillance footage?"
Beatrice's attitude was firm, and the man couldn't keep up the act: "Sorry, Ms. York. I'm just a chemistry enthusiast. I've always admired you, so I followed you."
Seeing the man still wouldn't tell the truth, Beatrice laughed coldly: "I see. I thought Jennifer was behind this, but I can't completely trust what you're saying. I'll go ask her myself."
She was sure Jennifer was behind this, but seeing that the man was relatively polite and completely different from the kidnappers before, she wasn't entirely certain anymore and decided to test him.
Sure enough, the man panicked immediately: "Don't go to Miss Rivera! It was Mr. Capulet who told me to do this."
The man had only been afraid of Mr. Capulet finding out that his surveillance was exposed, but compared to letting Miss Rivera know, it was better to confess.
Jennifer being Arthur's mistress was common knowledge. If Miss Rivera found out that Mr. Capulet was secretly concerned about another woman, things would only get more complicated.
This result surprised Beatrice, and she frowned deeply: "Why would Arthur have you do this?"
"I don't know the specific reason." Afraid Beatrice wouldn't believe him, the man showed her his communication records with Arthur.
"I'm just doing a job for money. I never meant to harm you. If you have questions, please ask Mr. Capulet. Just please don't call the police!" The man ran off after speaking.
Beatrice was speechless for a moment.
After arriving in Oceancrest City, she called Arthur for the first time on her own initiative.
When he answered, before he could speak, Beatrice asked directly: "Why are you having someone follow me when you have nothing better to do?"
He seemed surprised she found out so quickly. After a moment of silence on the other end, he sighed: "I was just curious about what you've been doing lately."
Hearing this, Beatrice felt like she was hearing a joke: "Arthur, if you're trying to get revenge for Jennifer, just say so."
Arthur laughed bitterly. After all this time, when he received Beatrice's call again, he had wanted to talk to her properly.
Including having someone follow her—he just wanted to know how she was doing.
Her work, her real abilities in chemistry, and what kind of relationship she had with those men around her.
Arthur didn't know why he was doing this, and even wondered if he'd gone crazy from work.
But regardless, he was concerned about Beatrice, and she actually thought this of him!
"Beatrice, if I wanted revenge on you, would I need to go to all this trouble?"
Arthur was powerful enough that if he simply wanted to deal with her, he really wouldn't need to be so complicated. But how could he explain having someone follow her?
"Arthur, you're not telling me you're concerned about me, are you?"
Even as Beatrice asked this, she found it laughable herself.
She thought Arthur would mock her as before, calling her narcissistic and lacking self-awareness.
But after a moment of silence on the other end, his low voice came through: "What if I am?"
Beatrice froze slightly, then came to her senses, a self-mocking smile appearing on her lips.
If Arthur had said this before, even if he was lying, she would have been overjoyed.
Now Beatrice only found it ironic: "Arthur, we've been married for seven years. I revolved around you for seven whole years, and you never even looked at me properly. Now that I don't want you anymore, you suddenly come saying you're concerned about me. Don't you find that ridiculous?"
