Chapter 31 The Man Beside Beatrice

Chapter 31 The Man Beside Beatrice

Beatrice's career was going smoothly, but the Capulet Family wasn't having such a good time.

After that day, Arthur's mind was in chaos, and he started avoiding Jennifer, whether intentionally or not.

After being turned down several times when she took the initiative to ask him out, Jennifer felt an unprecedented sense of crisis. She decided not to just sit around waiting, so she swallowed her pride and came to the Capulet Group.

Everyone at the company knew Jennifer and treated her as the future Mrs. Capulet, so no one dared to stop her.

Jennifer made her way smoothly to Arthur's office, but heard him on the phone with someone.

She couldn't help but stop and listen for a bit, only to discover that Arthur was asking someone to find out about Beatrice's recent activities.

Jennifer froze outside the door for a moment. When she came to her senses, her nose started to sting.

She had swallowed her pride and come here to make peace, but Arthur's mind was on Beatrice.

He used to not care about Beatrice at all.

Feeling betrayed, Jennifer was both hurt and jealous, wanting nothing more than to burst in and confront Arthur face to face.

But she held herself back in the end. Arthur clearly didn't care about her as much as he used to. If she acted impulsively, it would only push them further apart.

Besides, she wasn't like Beatrice, someone whose whole life revolved around romance. Her career always came first.

Without Arthur, she'd never find another man who could give her such strong support in her career and finances.

Inside the office, after Arthur hung up the phone, Jennifer composed herself and pushed the door open.

Seeing her, Arthur was a bit surprised: "Why are you here?"

"We haven't seen each other in so long. I missed you, so I came."

Jennifer said this as if it were obvious, her tone carrying a hint of grievance.

Only then did Arthur realize that he had indeed been cold to Jennifer lately.

"I've been busy recently. When I have time, I'll spend quality time with you."

Jennifer smiled, pretending she hadn't heard the phone call he just made.

As usual, after acting cute and affectionate with Arthur for a while, Jennifer stated the main purpose of her visit.

"Arthur, if you're busy, don't worry about me. After all, company matters are important. I came to see you not just because I missed you, but also for work."

Arthur liked and appreciated Jennifer's ambition and independence. He smiled and said, "Whatever problem you've run into at work, just tell me."

"It's not about my job. You know my greatest passion is still chemistry. I heard a new chemistry company just opened. The founder is a genius in the chemistry field, a prized student of Professor Sean. Because it's a new company, they're holding a chemistry symposium to recruit members. I've been staying up late these past few days writing a proposal that I want to bring to the symposium."

Arthur was stunned: "Sean? You mean Henry's uncle?"

"That's him."

Jennifer had no interest in joining that newly opened small company. Her main target was Sean.

She hoped to connect with Sean through the company's founder.

Seeing what she was thinking, Arthur said, "I heard from Gavin that Sean recently organized a new chemistry team, all top people in the field. You want to join too?"

Jennifer nodded. Ever since learning that Beatrice got into Orion Global Research Institute on her own merit, she couldn't let it go, even thinking that the reason she couldn't get into Orion Global Research Institute was because Beatrice was sabotaging her behind the scenes.

What's so great about Orion Global Research Institute? Compared to Professor Sean's team, it's nothing.

"Arthur, I'll be honest with you. With my talent and ability in chemistry, it's only a matter of time before Sean recognizes me. It's just that he's Henry's uncle after all, and I did have that conflict with Henry before, so I'm a bit worried. I'm attending this symposium partly hoping they'll see my abilities in person, and partly hoping you can invest some money in that new company, in my name."

Jennifer knew that new companies needed not just talent, but also funding.

She wanted to use the company's head as a connection. Ability was one thing, but funding was essential too. But she didn't have that much money, so she could only come to Arthur.

Arthur fell silent. It wasn't about the money—he just felt Jennifer's self-awareness was a bit off.

Her chemistry grades were indeed good, but there was still a gap between her and real geniuses.

Still, since this was Jennifer's wish, he would agree to this small matter.

"Where's the symposium for this new company?"

"Oceancrest City."

Arthur was startled. He'd recently been having people investigate Beatrice's whereabouts after she left Orion Global Research Institute, and had just learned that Beatrice was now in Oceancrest City too.

Arthur's hand around Jennifer's waist tightened: "Just tell me how much to invest. I'll go with you to this symposium."

Not knowing that Beatrice was also in Oceancrest City, Jennifer was thrilled and kissed Arthur on the cheek.

Sure enough, Arthur cared most about her. He easily agreed to invest a large sum to pave the way for her, and even agreed to accompany her to the symposium despite being so busy with work.

This was treatment Beatrice never got.

Even if Beatrice used playing-hard-to-get tactics to briefly get Arthur's attention, as long as Jennifer used a little strategy, Arthur would eventually come back to her.

Full of joy, Jennifer didn't notice that Arthur's mind had already wandered.

The next day, Arthur and Jennifer set off for Oceancrest City and arrived at the newly opened company.

They had barely started their tour when they ran into Beatrice and Ethan.

"Beatrice, what are you doing here?"

Beatrice was also a bit surprised: "I should be asking you that."

Jennifer snapped out of her shock, suddenly remembering the phone call Arthur made to find out about Beatrice's whereabouts.

So that's why Arthur suddenly put aside his work to come with her to Oceancrest City!

Jennifer clenched her hands into fists, her nails digging into her palms.

Ethan keenly sensed that Beatrice and they didn't get along, and spoke up: "My colleague's new company just opened, and he specially invited Ms. York and me to come inspect and provide guidance."

With one casual sentence, he explained why Beatrice was there while also elevating her status.

Jennifer immediately snapped out of her humiliation and anger, replaced by disbelief.

Ethan said this company was opened by his colleague, which meant he was also Sean's student.

So that's how Beatrice had the qualifications to be here—she was relying on a man again.

While feeling upset, Jennifer couldn't help but speak with contempt: "First Henry, now this man. Beatrice, I really underestimated you before."
