Chapter 332
Chapter 332
Diana POV
Lily had prepared a full table of dishes.
The estate had been quiet for so many years. Now it was finally lively again. Both young ladies had married wonderful men. Lily's eyes were red—clearly moved.
We were in the middle of eating when the doorbell suddenly rang through the living room.
The four of us exchanged glances.
None of us expected visitors at this hour.
After all, Jane and I had only arrived home this evening.
Lily said, "I'll go see."
She returned quickly.
She jogged back, still catching her breath. "It's a woman. She's acting crazy, ramming our gate. Says she needs to see Ms. Diana York. I asked her name, but she won't say."
At those words, everyone's eyes turned to me.
James said, "I'll check it out."
Frank cut in. "Just some crazy woman. Why not just send her away? Why bother checking?"
James ignored him.
Seeing him head out, I stood as well.
Whoever she was, she'd come looking for me. I needed to know what this was about.
Frank watched us leave, then turned back to Jane. "What's the rush? Never seen a crazy person before?"
Jane calmly continued eating, explaining, "Tomorrow is James and Diana's wedding. What if this lunatic shows up to make a scene?"
"Oh!"
Frank understood. "Mr. Howard's eliminating potential problems. Looks like he really wants to marry Diana."
---
As James and I approached the gate, we saw a woman with long hair hanging loose, repeatedly banging her head against the gate's iron bars. She looked completely unhinged.
But I still recognized her from her silhouette. "Katelyn?"
By the time I spoke, we'd reached the gate.
It remained closed. We stood inside, Katelyn outside.
Hearing my voice, she looked up. The moment she saw me, her eyes filled with joy.
She reached through the bars, trying to grab me, shouting, "Diana, Diana, please save Robert. I'm begging you to save Robert..."
I stood at a distance, watching her frantic state coldly, my tone devoid of warmth. "I can't save him. Leave."
"How can you not save him?" Katelyn screamed. "If you just write a letter of forgiveness, he'll get a reduced sentence. Diana, please let him go. I'm begging you—he was someone you loved..."
The instant those last words left her mouth, I felt a wave of cold fury shoot toward her.
She shivered involuntarily. Following the source of that chill, she met James's cold, indifferent face.
Katelyn froze completely. "Mr. Howard..."
Her teeth chattered. She couldn't meet James's gaze.
James didn't bother looking at her. His eyes were on me.
I took his arm and looked at Katelyn, my tone flat. "Katelyn, I don't know how you still have the nerve to come find me. Robert brought this on himself. If he weren't locked up right now, I'd be the one in prison. When you two plotted against me, you didn't leave me any way out. If I show him even a shred of mercy, I'd be condemning myself to ruin. So no—I won't forgive him. And I definitely won't write a letter of forgiveness."
"But he was someone you loved! How can you be so cold, so heartless?" Katelyn shouted in disbelief.
I laughed coldly. "Yeah, I'm pretty heartless. Not like you—you can still forgive a man who's rotten to the core. What, did all the other men in the world die out?"
Katelyn's lips trembled. She couldn't respond.
I had no interest in wasting more words on her. James and I went back inside.
I was genuinely puzzled.
Robert was such a mess, thrown into prison—and Katelyn was still trying every way possible to save him.
Love really was an eye-opener.
When we returned to the dining room, only Frank remained, still eating.
"Jane finished already?" I asked casually.
"Yep. Ms. York is so busy, she leaves me alone all the time."
He sounded like a neglected spouse.
James fired back. "You're living off her, and you're complaining?"
Shameless.
Frank replied cheerfully, "What's wrong with that? My wife lets me live off her. You're just jealous."
James and I both fell silent.
Fine. We conceded defeat.
---
As for Katelyn outside the gate, she refused to leave. She stayed there, keeping vigil.
It seemed she wouldn't go until Diana agreed to write that letter of forgiveness.
In the middle of the night, Harvey showed up with his men. They hauled Katelyn into a car.
In the pitch-black night, they dumped her at the entrance of a prison.
I don't know what Harvey said to her in the car, but when they threw her out, she looked completely unhinged, her mind scattered.
Standing at the prison entrance in the deserted outskirts—no people, no light, only gusts of cold wind assaulting her—she had no idea how she survived the night.
When the sun rose and light flooded the world, she seemed dazed, disoriented.
That morning, she went inside the prison to see Robert.
Robert was a complete wreck, nothing like his former self.
The moment he saw Katelyn, he grabbed the phone through the glass partition and demanded, "Did you see Diana? What did she say? She'll write the letter of forgiveness, right? She'll get me out, won't she?"
Katelyn didn't answer.
Seeing her silence, Robert lost it. He roared, "Say something, Katelyn! Say something! What happened? She'll save me, won't she?"
This prison was no place for a human being. He couldn't last another day.
The guard, seeing his agitation, moved to take him away.
Katelyn finally spoke into the phone. "She's getting married today."
"Who? Who? Who's getting married?"
Robert had a sinking feeling, but he didn't dare believe it could be that name.
Diana wouldn't get married.
Who would she even marry?
She must be outside waiting for him to get out.
Katelyn looked at his frantic, disbelieving expression and laughed coldly. "Diana. She's getting married today."
"No! No! No! That's impossible!"
Robert's face drained of all color.
He refused to accept it.
