Chapter 193 Committing Murder in the Street

Chapter 193 Committing Murder in the Street

Leona observed Richard's expression and sensed something was off. She quickly whispered a warning, "Something's wrong with him—his eyes look unfocused. Don't provoke him. If he does something reckless, we won't be able to handle the consequences."

Evelyn suppressed her anger and forced herself to calm down. "What do you want? Let's talk this through."

Seeing Evelyn's softened attitude, Richard immediately shouted, "I want you to take me back. I want to go home."

Evelyn only wanted to placate him temporarily and find a chance to escape with the children.

"Fine, I agree. I'll take you back."

"So can we leave now?"

As she spoke, Evelyn shot Leona a meaningful glance, signaling her to take the children and leave while she kept Richard occupied.

While Richard seemed momentarily distracted, Leona quickly pulled the two children behind her and slipped away from the side.

Suddenly, Richard's eyes widened as if something had triggered him.

When he looked at Evelyn, fury blazed in his eyes. "It's you! It's all because of you that our whole family ended up like this. You're the one to blame for everything."

As he spoke, Richard suddenly pulled a knife from his clothes and lunged at Evelyn.

The attack came so suddenly that no one expected Richard to commit violence in broad daylight.

By the time Evelyn turned around, Richard's knife had already pierced her shoulder.

Blood instantly flowed down her arm. Witnessing this scene, the surrounding crowd screamed in shock, yet no one dared step forward to intervene.

Leona was also stunned by what she saw. She wanted to help but had to protect the two children behind her.

Fortunately, Evelyn managed to shove him away, though this only widened the wound. The bleeding wouldn't stop.

Seeing this, Richard felt a perverse sense of excitement and shouted loudly, "An ungrateful daughter like you deserves to die! I wish I'd never given birth to you."

The pain jolted Evelyn back to clarity. Looking at the man before her, she found the situation deeply ironic.

She was also grateful she'd never softened toward him. Clearly, they were meant to hate each other forever.

"Mom!"

Julie and Leo had long been terrified by the scene before them. If Leona hadn't been shielding them, they might have been hurt as well.

More and more onlookers gathered around, yet no one dared intervene. In desperation, Leona grabbed a nearby chair and smashed it hard against Richard's head.

A dull thud sounded as Richard's body went limp and collapsed to the ground, twitching twice.

The knife fell from his hand, and both women's hearts finally settled.

"What are you all standing around for? Call the police!"

After recovering her senses, Leona shouted at the gawking bystanders while moving forward to support Evelyn.

Shortly after, police cars and an ambulance arrived almost simultaneously. Richard was taken away again, but not before continuing to shout, "Don't arrest me! What right do you have to arrest me? I don't want to go back to prison. Evelyn, tell them not to take me away."

Hearing this, Evelyn looked up at him briefly and watched as the police led him away once more.

Even Leona couldn't stand it anymore. "Disgusting! He actually expects you to help him get off? What a delusional fantasy."

Leona helped Evelyn onto the ambulance with the two children.

At Evelyn's request, Leona called home to have someone pick up the children first.

Fortunately, Evelyn remained conscious throughout and didn't pass out. The wound was simply treated.

Though the two children were somewhat frightened, they weren't seriously harmed.

Leona accompanied her while the wound was being dressed. Thinking back to the earlier scene, she still felt shaken.

"That kind of person should never have been released. He should've been locked up for life."

"Letting him out just endangers society. You were lucky today—if something had really happened, how would I have explained it to these two children?"

Evelyn smiled and shook her head. "It only looked scary. The wound isn't actually that deep."

"After being locked up for so long, he's not the pampered man he used to be. He doesn't have much strength left."

Seeing that Evelyn could still smile, Leona felt both helpless and relieved. "That may be true, but don't forget—he aimed for your chest. You only got stabbed in the shoulder because you dodged."

"No way. When Louis gets back, I'm definitely telling him."

Hearing this, Evelyn snapped back to attention and grabbed Leona's hand, whispering urgently, "Promise me you absolutely won't let him know about this."

Leona looked puzzled. "Why not?"

"He's been so busy lately. If he finds out, I'm afraid it'll distract him."

Leona rolled her eyes hard, unable to fathom what was going through her mind. "At a time like this, you're still thinking about him?"

"Besides, even if I don't say anything, with so many people there, someone must have recorded it. If you don't want him to know, you'd better pray he doesn't check the news."

Evelyn realized then how foolish her earlier thought had been.

Meanwhile, at the police station.

Richard was brought in for questioning. He'd sobered up considerably. "Officer, how many times do I have to tell you? I didn't do it on purpose. She's my own daughter—how could I possibly hurt my own child? I don't know what happened. My mind was completely confused at the time."

Once back at the station, his file was immediately pulled up. Due to his prior record, he received special attention.

When he returned, his unfocused gaze prompted them to run a blood test, which indeed revealed residual drugs in his system.

"You still think you're getting out? You just got released, and now you've committed assault with a deadly weapon in public."

"We found drug residue in your blood. Even if you didn't mean to do it, those hallucinations and erratic behavior were caused by drug use. So we can't release you."

Hearing the officer's words, Richard's eyes widened in disbelief. "That's impossible! I would never use drugs."

"I still know what I should and shouldn't do."
