Chapter 191 Mrs. King Lost Contact
Chapter 191 Mrs. King Lost Contact
Evelyn stared at the vial in her hand, visibly hesitant. "Since you've already obtained such crucial evidence, why not analyze it yourself?"
The attending physician shook his head helplessly. He wished he could. After all, everyone had their curiosity. "If I could, I certainly would. But you know as well as I do—if we tested it at our hospital, they'd find out immediately. When people can be planted right under our noses, what's impossible?"
Evelyn gave a wry smile. Thinking it over, it made perfect sense. "In that case, I'll take it. I'll let you know once I have results."
She rose to leave, but the attending physician stopped her. "Aren't you going to see him?"
Evelyn froze, somewhat puzzled. She had no relationship with Ryan—what was there to see?
Seeming to read her confusion, the attending physician smiled. "I mean, see the patient's condition. It might be useful for analyzing the drug."
Hearing this, Evelyn hesitated but ultimately agreed.
Arriving at Ryan's room, she could see through the doorway—he lay quietly on the hospital bed, just as he had during her last visit.
Evelyn still pushed open the door and entered. Only now, Ryan appeared noticeably thinner, his complexion poor.
Even with meticulous nursing care and the best medications, there was little they could do.
The nurse conducting routine checks muttered quietly, "Can someone who's been lying here this long even wake up?"
Whether she was talking to herself or directing the comment at Evelyn was unclear. Evelyn took a deep breath and answered from a professional standpoint. "As long as vital signs remain, there's a possibility of waking."
That's what she said, but anyone in medicine knew—maintaining vital signs was easy; actually waking up was another matter entirely.
After recording the relevant data, the nurse glanced at her indifferently. Though they weren't close, they could exchange a few words. "I do hope he wakes up. Dying this young would be quite a shame."
With that, the nurse turned and left.
Evelyn carefully examined Ryan's vital signs. The hospital had cared for him well—his body showed no problems, yet he still wouldn't wake. Perhaps it truly was related to the drug in her hand.
Just as she turned to leave, Ryan suddenly spoke from behind her. "Evelyn, Evelyn don't go..."
The words made Evelyn freeze instantly. She turned around, her face full of shock.
The room fell eerily silent. Ryan, who had just spoken, showed no signs of response.
She stepped forward to examine him carefully, confirming he showed no signs of regaining consciousness. What she'd heard was likely just unconscious murmuring.
Evelyn felt somewhat helpless, a bitter smile crossing her face, but not a shred of sympathy for him.
Belated affection was cheaper than grass.
Did Ryan think his obsession with her represented deep feelings?
From the day he became entangled with Hannah, he should have known they were destined to become strangers.
And now his murmured utterance of her name struck Evelyn as nothing but a joke.
Returning to the institute, Evelyn immediately analyzed the drug the attending physician had given her. She discovered it was a medication meant to treat coma.
However, this drug's potency was extremely strong. Continuous use over a period would lead to brain death.
No wonder Ryan remained unconscious. If not for the hospital staff forcibly maintaining his vital signs, he would already be dead.
Evelyn informed her overseas mentor about both the drug analysis and the previous detection of X1350.
After discussing business, her mentor couldn't help teasing, "You're becoming more and more outstanding. That advertisement your family of four filmed—I can even see it abroad now. And the medication is selling very well overseas too."
Hearing the phrase "family of four," Evelyn's face inexplicably flushed. Some soft place in her heart seemed to be touched.
"That's all the director's excellent filming. We just followed the director's instructions."
Hearing Evelyn's bashfulness, her mentor laughed cheerfully. "Seeing you doing well puts my mind at ease. But speaking of which, how are things progressing between you two? From the advertisement, you really do look like a family of four."
"Everything's good, quite good."
As she spoke, Evelyn didn't even notice that the smile never left her lips.
Meanwhile.
Since Layla left, Hannah had been unable to contact her. Calls went unanswered, other communication methods received no response, and even sent messages remained unread.
This made Hannah wonder if she'd been abandoned.
She sat in the living room of the luxury apartment Layla had left her, appearing calm on the surface but actually so nervous she began muttering to herself.
Suddenly the front door opened and a middle-aged man walked in. His gaze carried a predatory quality, constantly lingering on Hannah.
Hearing the noise, Hannah immediately stood and rushed toward him. "Well? Did you reach her?"
The visitor was none other than the estate manager Layla had left behind.
Seeing him shake his head, Hannah deflated like a punctured balloon, returning to her chair. Fear crept into her eyes as she muttered continuously, "It can't be. How could something happen? Nothing will happen."
Watching Hannah's near-manic state, the manager calmly walked over and sat beside her.
"Don't overthink it." As he spoke, the manager placed his hand on Hannah's body, his fingers constantly tracing over her exposed shoulder. "Overseas business was always tricky, involving many aspects. The speculation is that Windsor Corporation is sabotaging us from behind, cutting off our funding chain. We can't get final payments for many projects, or receive subsequent goods. Plus many companies are creating difficulties together, so things aren't easily resolved. Not being able to contact her temporarily is normal."
Hannah nodded repeatedly, repeating his words as if brainwashing herself.
After a moment, she suddenly noticed the manager's hand on her shoulder. She quickly shifted aside, creating distance between them.
"If you ask me, why don't you take this opportunity to eliminate those troublesome people?"
Hannah's instinctive reaction clearly displeased the manager. His tone became noticeably less courteous.
He'd thought Hannah had some brains, but unexpectedly, the moment he finished speaking, Hannah suddenly stood up, staring at him warily.
