Chapter 182 A Blessing in Disguise
Chapter 182 A Blessing in Disguise
Louis looked down and noticed Evelyn staring at the two children, lost in thought. He knew her mind was elsewhere. "What are you thinking about?"
Evelyn gradually came back to herself, smiled, and shook her head. "I'm thinking about how we can get married as soon as possible," she said softly.
Louis's body visibly stiffened, but his eyes betrayed uncontrollable excitement.
He understood the implication behind her words—she wanted to resolve the Hannah situation quickly.
And the real force behind Hannah, Layla, was who they truly needed to deal with.
"By the way, I just got word today that the Taylor family had business dealings with Mrs. King a while back."
Hearing this, Evelyn was somewhat surprised. She looked at Louis and, seeing he wasn't joking, still found it hard to believe. "How is that possible? That doesn't make sense."
Marcus wouldn't have chosen to form a marriage alliance with the Taylor family unless it was a strong partnership. He shouldn't have been unaware of this.
Either the Taylor family had secret overseas business with Mrs. King, or Marcus hadn't investigated thoroughly before.
But either way, this was actually good news for them now.
Louis looked somewhat helpless, but more than anything, relieved. "It's true. Grandfather investigated and found out."
"So now he's no longer insisting on the Taylor family alliance. He might even voluntarily dissolve the engagement before long."
Seeing Louis's pleased expression, Evelyn felt happy too. For them, this was truly a blessing in disguise.
Just as they were chatting and laughing, a phone rang.
Evelyn saw it was an unknown number and assumed it was a business partner. When she answered, she was surprised. "Yes, this is she."
"Alright, I understand."
Seeing Evelyn's expression suddenly change, Louis couldn't help feeling startled and quickly asked, "What happened?"
Evelyn hadn't recovered from her shock yet. She shook her head faintly. "It was the prison. They said I can take my father home now."
Louis looked shocked. He had indeed arranged for someone to pull strings to get Evelyn's father released early on good behavior.
But he'd specifically instructed that once it was done, they must notify him first and absolutely not contact Evelyn. He hadn't expected them to call her phone.
"What were they thinking? Didn't I say not to disturb you?"
Louis blurted out instinctively. Only then did Evelyn realize he'd been working behind the scenes.
"Forget it. What difference does it make? Though I don't know what the situation is at the women's prison."
He could tell she was still worried about her mother.
After discussing it, they decided to have Ethan take the two children home while they went to the prison.
On the way, Louis inquired about the women's prison and learned her mother hadn't been released yet.
Even Louis was somewhat surprised at how smoothly things had gone.
Thinking this, he unconsciously increased his driving speed.
More than ten minutes later.
The car had just pulled up outside the prison when a group of reporters suddenly emerged from the corner, surrounding the vehicle.
Seeing this, they exchanged glances, immediately guessing someone had deliberately done this to lure her out.
"Don't get out. I'll handle these people."
Louis's face turned cold. He dropped this line and was about to open the door when Evelyn grabbed his arm.
Her expression was troubled, but her eyes were extremely determined.
The surrounding reporters didn't miss this opportunity either, already frantically photographing them both.
"Forget it. Can't you see? Today was specially prepared for me."
Evelyn knew that once she appeared, her identity as Evelyn could no longer be hidden.
Since she couldn't avoid it, she might as well face it directly.
Seeing Evelyn like this, Louis felt deeply pained, but he understood that once she decided something, she wouldn't easily change her mind.
Evelyn took a deep breath, calmly opened the car door, and stepped out.
From the moment she got out, Hannah, hiding in the corner, wore a triumphant smile.
The surrounding reporters swarmed forward, pointing cameras at her and continuously asking, "Ms. Maria, are you Evelyn?"
The sudden questions surprised Evelyn. Just then, she noticed Hannah nearby.
Their eyes met. Hannah's smug, ugly expression was on full display.
At this moment, Evelyn finally understood—everything today had been calculated by her.
Before Evelyn arrived, Hannah had already made an appearance before these reporters, not only being praised for not despising her imprisoned biological father but personally coming to pick him up.
She'd even revealed that Evelyn had changed her name, refused to contact her family, and hadn't visited once in four years.
Originally these reporters didn't know who Hannah was talking about, but with Evelyn's appearance, everything became self-evident.
Facing their questions, Evelyn didn't answer, knowing that if she responded, these reporters would certainly take her words out of context.
Neither confirming nor denying became the best response.
But how could these reporters easily let her go?
"Ms. Maria, please answer our questions."
"Is what Ms. Hannah said all true?"
"During these four years, you ignored your biological father and even changed your name to distance yourself from your family. Isn't that too cold-blooded?"
"As a daughter, you should have a responsibility to support your elderly parent."
As soon as the words were spoken, Evelyn suddenly stood still, hands hanging at her sides, clenched into tight fists. Scenes from the past suddenly flashed through her mind.
"Cold-blooded?"
Evelyn suddenly laughed coldly, finding the word particularly ironic.
She no longer dodged, but instead raised her head to face the reporters' cameras directly. "Back then, he tried to kill his own biological daughter for the sake of his adopted daughter. Does he even deserve to be called a father?"
"If that's the case, since he went to such lengths for Hannah, then Hannah should naturally support him in his old age."
"What happened back then was known to everyone. If you'd just spend a little effort investigating, wouldn't you know everything?"
As she spoke, Evelyn walked past the crowd, looking toward Hannah standing not far away.
The provocation and mockery in her eyes overflowed, but to Evelyn, it only seemed disgusting.
After all these years, Hannah still had only these tricks.
"I won't respond to this matter again. If you have any other questions, go ask Hannah."
Louis quickly stepped forward, protecting her in his arms, and they left directly.
