Chapter 16: What Is He Doing To Me?
Chapter 16: What Is He Doing To Me?
Yvonne
One day, I was talking about an assignment with one of my course-mates when Samuel came from behind and wrapped his arms around my neck casually, listening to my conversation with her and also taking part in the discussion. Suddenly I felt weird as if someone was looking at me and when I glanced around casually, my eyes caught Nathan glaring at me and Samuel.
He was enraged, if looks could kill, we would be six feet under the ground by now. I averted my eyes immediately, not knowing what to do. Why was he looking at us? Or maybe I misunderstood, I looked up again but he was nowhere to be seen. Strange.
Some days later, I was done with lectures so I went to the parking lobby for my car when I stopped. Noticing Nathan talking to some blonde girl in the distance but I couldn't hear what they were talking about. And all of a sudden, that girl hugged him and he put his hands on her shoulders when his eyes landed on me. I got rooted to the spot, unable to move. He stared at me with a cold and dark expression and then moved his arms around the girl, hugging her back and glaring at me.
My eyes welled up with tears as I quickly averted my gaze from his piercing glare and looked at the ground before hurrying to my car and driving off. I realized from that day that I have fallen for him.
Just like that, our second year started and I got to know later that the girl I saw with Nathan was a fresher and her name is Sash Carter and she was a sister of one of his best friends and she joined college recently. Whenever I saw Nathan after that, she was always by his side, clinging to his arm and I avoided them like a plague but somehow I still end up seeing their glimpse. I made sure to keep myself away from them, to protect my heart. I didn't want to see how that cold man turned into a kind and gentle person only for her.
I was in the cafeteria with my friends and Samuel couldn't come to college today due to some important work. We were eating when we heard Sasha talking to her friends on the table next to us, she was telling them about how sweet of a boyfriend Nathan is and how caring he is and so on. I got up and excused myself as I lost my appetite. I made my way to the library to study and wait for my next lectures, I was engrossed in my thoughts while going downstairs. Absent-mindedly, I missed a few steps and fell down.
"Ouch!" I landed on my butt and my foot twisted painfully beneath me.
I touched my ankle and it seemed sprained, I tried to stand up but winced in pain. I gathered my things from the floor and looked down at my feet, thinking what to do now.
"Can my day be worse than this?" I looked heavenward and complained.
I sighed and looked around and instantly got the answer that my day can be worse than this. Nathan was coming towards me from around the corner, probably wanting to go upstairs and I panicked. What should I do now? Should I just stand here, pretending to use my phone? No, he will still think I am stupid, using a phone in the middle of nowhere.
Then should I just walk past him, we are not in the greeting terms anyway. Yes, that is a good idea but the question is how? I tried to stand properly and winced. I clenched my team, closed my eyes for a second and took a deep breath before turning around and walking confidently. I didn't give him a glance and looked straight ahead. Just a few more steps and I will succeed.
The small beads of sweat formed on my forehead due to suppressing pain and finally, two more steps and I walked past him without faltering. I was not even able to congratulate myself on my brave act just now when I felt a strong hand hold my arm firmly as he took a few steps backwards and stood right in front of me.
"Are you stupid?"
Although it was posed as a question, his eyes staring back at me intently was implying that I was stupid.
"What are you talking about?" I said dryly as I tried to free my arm from his strong yet strangely gently grip. He looked at me, raising an eyebrow and inspected my foot with his eyes.
"I am fine," I tried to walk past him when he suddenly hoisted me up in his arms bridal style and I shrieked.
Instinctively, my arms went around his neck, awakening my senses and his sudden nearness made my inside all jumbled up.
"What are you doing? Put me down!" I whispered-yelled at him, he didn't listen and kept walking and I felt people staring at us.
"People are looking at us weirdly, please put me down. I am fine." I tried to hide my face in the hollow of his neck embarrassed and I felt his arms tighten around me and he chuckled.
'What a beautiful sound.' I thought in awe. We were in the parking lobby already, I still have classes. What the hell is he trying to do?
"Put me down!" I said annoyed this time.
"Nathan!" I yelled, he stopped walking and turned his face towards me.
I gasped at the sudden closeness, his nose was almost touching mine and I looked at his eyes just to meet with intense emotions swirling in those tantalizing green eyes of his. I can stare into these eyes forever.
'He has a girlfriend, Yvonne. He loves someone else, wake up!' a voice rang in my head, bringing me back to reality. I looked away from his eyes and said in a polite and distant manner.
"I am okay, thank you for trying to help me but please put me down. I can manage on my own now."
He put me down gently but didn't let me move, I looked at him questioningly. He signaled towards his car, he held my waist firmly before bringing our car keys from his pocket and opened the door for me.
"Get in," he ordered and made me sit inside the car, not letting me speak.
"Be careful with your foot," he added, because closing the door and settling in the driver's seat.
"I told you that I can manage, you don't have to do this." I said, a little annoyed at his caring attitude. I don't want to drown deeper than I already have.
"Can you just accept someone's help without over reacting?" He said coldly.
"Look who is taking," I mumbled under my breath but when he turned his head to me sharply, I knew he heard me.
I immediately looked at the window, ignoring the handsome devil beside me. He stopped the car at a hospital and came towards my side to help me out and picked me up again, taking me inside.
"I am not disabled, Nathan. I can walk on my own." I said firmly and noticed a small smile appeared on his lips before we reached the room and he put me down in the bed carefully.
"It is just a little sprained," the doctor said.
"Thank…" I was about to thank the doctor when he interrupted me.
"It is not anything serious, right? She also put pressure on her foot before coming here. Will it have a bad impact on her healing process?" He asked the doctor.
Is he worried about me? I shook my head, it is impossible.
The doctor started to examine my ankle again, I looked at him perplexed at his behavioral change. He glanced at me and extended his hand, wiping the beads of sweat on my forehead and around my eyebrows. I closed my eyes at the sensation.
What is he doing to me?
