Put Me Out Of Misery.
Put Me Out Of Misery.
Spades – Point of View
Once again, I woke to the beeps of the monitor and Ace beside me.
This time was different, though. I felt broken down and merged. I felt out of place. I didn’t know where I was, but I didn’t care. Ace was here, and that was all that mattered.
My mouth was dry. I shifted on the bed, and Ace woke up, suddenly. His gaze connected with mine, and my breath hitched. I found everything in his eyes. All the words unsaid. All the apologies. Everything was in his eyes.
“Hi.” I smiled at him. My heart raced, and the monitor confirmed it.
He glanced at it, frowning, then back at me.
“Hi. Can you – do you want me to get the doctor?” He asked, uncertainty colouring his words.
“I’m fine. Just happy to see you.” I flashed him a grin. I felt better. I really did. A bandage was wrapped around my midriff. My left shoulder was fucked. My leg was held high. I think they broke a finger. I still have bruises, and I still feel like shit, but seeing Ace made everything feel so insignificant. I was here and so was he. We were fine. We would be fine.
“O – okay, good, good. How do you feel? Anything hurt?” He moved closer to me, and I craned my neck to get a good look at him. He was tall. He needed a haircut and a shave. I wanted him to keep his hair low. I loved his long hair, but I hadn’t gotten to enjoy him this way. Life had been chaotic ever since my birthday. We needed to go back to that peace.
“I’m fine. A lot of things hurt, but I’m happy to see you, Ace.” I smiled at him, but yawned. Exhaustion settled in my bones. My eyelids grew heavy.
“I’m so fucking sorry, Spades. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” Ace’s words were all I heard as I slept. I wanted to tell him there was nothing to apologise for, but I couldn’t. I was half asleep already.
When I woke hours later, the sun had set, but Ace was still there. He had a tray of food before him. He was serving.
“Is that for me?” I asked, smiling, my voice hoarse. My head felt so heavy. My leg was no longer hanging up. I wasn’t sure whether I felt better or worse. One thing remained, and that was Ace. He was here.
He smiled at me, “If you are feeling up to it.”
My mouth was dry and sticky. I wasn’t. Food was the last thing on my mind, but I knew I had to eat.
“When I wake up. Can you come sit beside me for a moment?” I asked, my heart racing.
He looked at me, dropped the spoon and walked to me. He sat beside me, and I reached for his warm hands. I inhaled him in. I missed him terribly. He was everything I wanted and more.
“How do you feel?” He whispered, and I smiled.
“Better now that you are here.”
“This is not your grave, Spades.” He reminded me, and I nodded.
“We have so many plans. We are getting married, remember? We are adopting a daughter. A beautiful baby girl who looks so much like me, but has your calmness. I hope she doesn’t inherit my anger.” He teased, and I chuckled lightly.
“You need to see yourself the way I see you. You are golden, my love. We’ll be lucky to have a fiery daughter like her father. Babies are blessings. She’ll be ours.”
Excitement thrummed through my veins, and I wanted to dance with happiness. I couldn’t, though. My leg was fucked, and so was my shoulder. It was actually better, which made me wonder how much time had passed.
“I can’t wait to start my life with you.” He pressed his lips to mine fleetingly, but I held on to him greedily, and kissed him back, sliding my tongue into his mouth. I groaned softly as he slid his fingers through my hair, pulling at the roots tenderly.
He pulled away with a smile, “Your heart is going insane, my love.”
I rolled my eyes, flushing. “You are my heart.”
He climbed the big bed and wrapped his arms around me. I fell asleep within seconds. The next couple of days were filled with healing. Our friends checked in every couple of hours. I spoke to my Mom, spoke to Irina, and even Valentina. They all hated what had happened, but were glad I was healing quite well.
Our soldiers and Cateleya’s had been wiping out Moscow, which was why we remained there. This was our home. We were not leaving anymore. No more running. Ace asked for his father’s house to be rebuilt and fixed. It took some hits in the war. Lee was in our custody. I wasn’t ready to see him quite yet. He was the orchestrator of everything.
It had been a week since the surgery. I felt better. I could walk now, which was why I was taking a walk with Ace. These events have changed Ace. It had all sharpened him into a different man. Which was nice, because I loved him, every version of him. I would always love him.
“Why are you smiling to yourself?” He asked, nudging my shoulder lightly. The good shoulder.
I chuckled, “Just thinking of how much you’ve grown. I’m proud of you, my love.”
He flushed at the praise, “Thank you.”
We walked silently. Our arms were linked. I frowned when he reached into my pocket.
“Do you have something in your pocket?” He asked, and froze when he saw the ringbox.
If I were still hooked to the monitor, my heart would be going awry.
“You weren’t supposed to see that yet.” I took it from him, my cheeks aflamed.
He was silent, but he reached into his pocket and pulled out a ring.
“Oh,” I said in shock.
“I’ve been carrying this around for two weeks. Put me out of my misery already.” He grinned.
