Chapter 166
Chapter 166
Edward walked in, chuckled twice, and sat down at the table.
The whole family finally had their first breakfast together.
"Oh, Alice, why don't you invite Mr. Ford to tonight's dinner?" Hannah reminded her.
She had originally planned to invite him herself, but knowing William had feelings for Wendy, she figured Wendy should be the one to reach out.
As a mother, Hannah could see William's feelings plain as day. She had a good impression of him and was happy to play matchmaker.
"Me?" Wendy tilted her head.
She'd been so caught up in the family reunion these past few days that she hadn't been in touch with William at all.
"Of course. William has been working so hard for our family, and I haven't properly thanked him yet. After tonight, take him out for a nice meal and show him how much we appreciate him."
Hannah smiled.
Wendy nodded. She felt the same way. William had put in so much effort without a single complaint. A dinner was the least she could do.
All the big names in Novaria received invitations. The Green family's influence in Bay City was well known, and anyone looking to expand there knew they needed to stay on good terms with them.
So plenty of people were happy to come. And with the Greens hinting at a major announcement, nobody wanted to miss it.
The entire day, everyone in elite circles was buzzing about what the big news could be.
But Edward said nothing.
By afternoon, Jeffrey had arrived, and even Aurora and Mandy showed up.
Mandy walked in complaining that Aurora had blown her chance. Now that Alice had been found, the Green family's fortune had nothing to do with them anymore.
Word was that Edward had already started transferring assets to Alice.
Aurora wasn't in a great mood either. She had been too full of herself.
When Jeffrey saw Wendy, his face lit up with affection. He hauled in a stack of property deeds taller than a person and handed them to her. "Here, all for my precious granddaughter. Take them. They're yours now."
Mandy's eyes went wide standing right beside him.
Wendy tried to refuse. Hannah and Edward had already given her so much, and she felt embarrassed taking more.
"Grandpa, Mom and Dad have already given me so much. It's really enough."
Jeffrey pretended to be annoyed. "What they gave you is nothing compared to this. These are properties all around the world. Wherever you want to travel, you'll have a place to stay."
Wendy glanced at Hannah, who smiled and nodded. Only then did Wendy accept. "Thank you, Grandpa."
Aurora was so furious she could barely keep it together.
She was a Green too. She had been raised by the family since childhood, so by all rights she should have been the favorite. Why did Wendy get showered with everything the moment she came back, while she got nothing?
The living room filled with laughter and warmth, until Hannah took Wendy upstairs to get ready for the evening.
Wendy remembered to message William, and he said he'd come to the dinner.
At the grand hotel.
Many guests had already arrived early, and Edward was there ahead of time greeting them.
"Mr. Green, you look as sharp as ever," said Christopher, who knew the Greens had pulled their funds last time and was going out of his way to be charming.
Edward kept his expression neutral. "Not at all, Mr. Landon. You're the impressive one, with banks stretching across the country and overseas."
Christopher smiled. "If Mr. Green ever needs anything, we're always here for you."
The implication was clear — he wanted Edward to take out a loan through his bank.
At the level of the Green and Ford families, their wealth was beyond measure. Every bank was competing for their business.
"Good to know," Edward said, without bringing up what had happened before.
He couldn't stand people taking advantage of Wendy. Someone who played both sides like that deserved a little lesson.
Guests kept streaming in, and speculation was running hot about what the evening's announcement would be.
"Word is it's something huge. The Greens have been moving a big chunk of their fixed assets, transferring it all to some woman."
"Seriously? Who could she be?"
"You haven't heard? Mrs. Green lost a daughter years ago. They've been searching for over twenty years. Maybe they actually found her."
The picture was starting to come together.
Then Wendy appeared, surrounded by the whole Green family. She wore a pale yellow silk gown that showed off her figure perfectly.
Her hair was swept up, giving her a gentle, graceful look. Her features were delicate to begin with, and the right makeup brought out every one of them.
"Wow, Alice is absolutely stunning. She reminds me of myself when I was young," Hannah said admiringly.
Wendy flushed at the praise and ducked her head shyly.
The banquet hall was alive with conversation and the clinking of glasses.
Backstage, Wendy was a bundle of nerves when William pushed open the door and walked in.
"What are you doing back here?"
He shrugged. "Mrs. Green asked me to come. She said you'd be nervous on your own."
Wendy lowered her head and let out a long breath. "She was right."
"Don't worry. You'll get used to it," William said with a smile.
One day all of the Green family's business would be in Wendy's hands, and he had no doubt she would handle it brilliantly.
Wendy wasn't sure she was ready to go public with everything. But when she looked out at the hopeful faces of everyone who had waited so long for this moment, she couldn't bring herself to say no.
They had all been waiting for this day for too long.
"Thank you, William." Wendy's eyes shimmered like stars.
She meant every word.
William's heart skipped a beat. From the moment he walked through that door, he knew — it had to be her. There was no one else for him.
He couldn't bear to see her hurting. All he wanted was to carry some of that weight for her.
Wendy smiled — soft and warm, just like those early moments between them. In a moment this big, she was glad William was by her side.
And somewhere in the quiet of that feeling, she knew. She was falling for him.
But she wasn't sure how he felt, so she kept it to herself.
William took her hand and held it in his. "Things are only going to get better from here."
Downstairs, Edward had already made the announcement — he had found his daughter.
Wendy walked down the sweeping spiral staircase step by step, holding her gown, like something out of a dream.
"This is Alice, the daughter the Green family lost all those years ago. She will be the one to take the Green Group even further."
Those words made it official. The Green family's legacy was now in Wendy's hands.
And she hadn't even changed her last name yet.
"Wait, is that real? Isn't that the woman they called the most beautiful researcher online a while back?"
"She's a Green? That's incredible. Who wouldn't be jealous?"
In the crowd, John's face darkened.
Lisa leaned in and said, "Wendy is actually a Green? We're in trouble. After the way we treated her — what if she comes after us?"
