Chapter 165
Chapter 165
After Evelyn got home, Christopher exploded.
"Who did you manage to piss off out there? The bank just got a notice that nearly 100 million in cash flow will be pulled next month."
Christopher's face was dark. "What exactly did you do?"
Evelyn was startled. No matter what she'd done before, Christopher had never blown up at her like this.
Just who was that middle-aged woman?
"I didn't do anything." Evelyn's voice came out small and guilty.
"You're still not admitting it? I went to find out why, and the other party told me to come ask you myself."
Christopher was furious. The bank's cash flow had already been in bad shape after William's scheming, and now a hundred million was suddenly being pulled out on top of that.
If things kept going this way, the shareholders would vote to remove him from his position.
Evelyn's voice trembled. "I really didn't do anything."
Christopher adored his daughter, and seeing how scared she was, his heart softened. "Fine. What's going on between you and William?"
He'd known they were dating and hadn't pressed the issue. A connection with the Ford family would be the best possible outcome.
Evelyn looked down and didn't tell the truth. "It's going okay."
"Then get engaged soon. Stop dragging your feet. The Ford family is out of reach for most people, and it's rare that William has feelings for you. It would be good for our family too." Christopher said earnestly.
Even though he wanted to build ties with the Ford family, what mattered most was that Evelyn was happy.
Evelyn nodded. "I know."
After Christopher left, Evelyn sank to the floor, her eyes burning with jealous rage.
If it weren't for Wendy, she never would have been scolded by her father. He used to not even be able to bring himself to speak a harsh word to her.
Evelyn gritted her teeth. She would make Wendy disappear, sooner or later.
It was often said that fine feathers did not make fine birds.
Ever since Hannah had found Wendy again, she'd been getting better day by day, buying things for Wendy every single day.
She'd just pushed Edward into buying a villa in Novaria for Wendy to move into.
Where Wendy was living now was just too small.
"Alright, dear, I'll take care of it. I'll arrange a driver and a housekeeper, so don't worry." Edward said helplessly, watching Hannah bustle around all morning.
"No, what do you know about what a girl wants? I need to go take another look and get the villa set up — give Alice a nice surprise." Hannah huffed.
Marlowe watched the house come back to life with its old cheerful energy, and just smiled, exchanging a glance with Edward.
With Wendy here, the family finally felt truly warm again.
"And all those assets in your name — transfer everything to Alice. The dinner party is tomorrow, so go get ready." Hannah ordered.
Edward smiled. "Got it. I won't keep a single thing — it all goes to our daughter."
Hannah nodded, satisfied, then hurried out with Marlowe.
Wendy's head was spinning from all the assets Hannah had handed over to her. She knew the Green family was wealthy, but she hadn't realized just how wealthy.
She tried to refuse again and again, but couldn't get out of it.
"Wendy, that outfit looks so familiar — I think I've seen it in a magazine. It must have cost a fortune." Emily said the moment she saw Wendy.
Wendy glanced down. Hannah had bought her so many clothes that she probably couldn't wear them all without repeating an outfit for a whole year.
"Just picked it up on a whim."
Wendy smiled.
"It's gorgeous. When I have money, I'm buying one too. Oh wow, Wendy, that bracelet is stunning." Emily said enviously.
Wendy gave Emily a light knock on the head. "Shouldn't you be working? Have you figured out that data yet?"
"Not yet. I'm going right now." Emily scurried off.
Wendy looked down at what she was wearing and smiled. Having a mom felt so good.
Everything bought, everything taken care of — all she had to do was wear it and let Hannah see her, and Hannah would be happy for the whole day.
Hannah dressed Wendy up like a doll, wishing she could buy Wendy the most beautiful things in the world.
Wendy was becoming very wealthy, and she still wasn't quite used to it.
After work, Hannah took her to see the villa, and that evening had a moving company help Wendy settle in.
Wendy stood in the vast living room of the villa, feeling a little dazed. How had she ended up in a place like this so suddenly?
"What's wrong? Don't you like it? I'll have your father buy another one." Hannah saw Wendy standing there in a daze and reached for her phone.
Wendy quickly stopped her. "No, it's not that. I'm just not used to it — living in such a big place all of a sudden."
"Silly kid. Everything I can give you, I will. Don't worry, and don't feel like it's too much. You're my child. You don't need to think about anything — just live happily." Hannah said, patting Wendy's head.
Wendy's eyes quickly filled with tears. "I know. Thank you, Mom."
Hannah and Wendy held each other in a moment of warmth they had both waited more than twenty years for.
"Oh, don't forget about tomorrow night's dinner. We've already sent out the invitations — all you need to do is dress up beautifully."
Wendy nodded.
"Alice is the most beautiful of all." Hannah said lovingly, touching Wendy's face.
"Mom, why don't you and Dad move in here with me? There are so many rooms." Wendy said.
Hannah looked surprised, her eyes going wide with delight. "You want to live with us?"
She had originally thought that since she'd just found Wendy again, she didn't want to put too much pressure on her, so she hadn't brought up living together — afraid that Wendy might feel even the slightest bit uncomfortable.
She never expected Wendy to bring it up herself. Hannah's eyes grew red at the corners.
Wendy smiled. "Of course. I want to live with my parents. Besides, a house this big — I'd be scared living here alone."
Wendy leaned against Hannah's shoulder and said in a playful, coaxing tone.
Hannah's whole heart felt full. She agreed right away. "Okay, okay. My sweet girl. I'll have your father move over tomorrow."
"Can Mom sleep in my room tonight?"
Hannah nodded and sent Marlowe off to pack some things.
When Edward heard that Hannah wasn't coming home, he wasn't happy. "Why does she get to stay at our daughter's place and I don't? I want to go too."
Marlowe laughed so hard she nearly doubled over. "Mrs. Green says to pack your things here first and move over tomorrow."
"Really? I can come too?" Edward perked up immediately, his eyes brightening, the wrinkles at the corners crinkling with joy.
"Yes." Marlowe confirmed.
"Alright then. I'll just stay here one more night."
That night was the happiest night Hannah had ever had. Her daughter lay beside her — sweet and thoughtful and everything she'd hoped for.
She had waited so long for this day.
God had finally answered her wait and brought her daughter back to her.
When Wendy woke up the next morning, breakfast was already set out on the table.
"Mrs. Green, Ms. Green, breakfast is ready!" Marlowe called out cheerfully.
Hannah took Wendy's hand, and they had just sat down when the doorbell rang.
"It's Mr. Green." Marlowe glanced toward the door.
Hannah let out a little huff. "He's here this early just to eat breakfast."
