Chapter 157
Chapter 157
"Not only is she pretty, but she's so patient too." Zachary kept going on and on until I noticed the man beside me glaring at him with hatred.
Only then did Zachary's voice gradually die down.
He thought, 'No way, did Wendy really not reply to William's message?'
William patted him on the shoulder and reminded him, "Study hard."
Then he left Zachary with a lonely view of his back.
Zachary shuddered. He felt like he'd just brushed with death. It was all because he couldn't shut his mouth.
The more William thought about it, the angrier he got. He pulled out his phone and sent Wendy a message: [What are you doing?]
Ten minutes passed, then half an hour, and Wendy still hadn't replied.
During this time, William checked his phone irritably dozens of times.
Even when his phone showed low battery, he kept checking.
Seeing this, Jack quickly said, "Mr. Ford, Ms. Moore needs to come to the Ford Group for a meeting tomorrow. I forgot to notify her just now. Why don't you send her a message?"
Normally, if Jack dared to forget to notify someone about a meeting, William would have chewed him out countless times.
But now William just looked up and glanced at Jack casually, saying quietly, "What time?"
"One in the afternoon. Ms. Moore could come early at noon and have lunch with the suppliers."
Jack had an impeccable sense of timing.
Only then did William pick up his low-battery phone and send a message: [Tomorrow at noon, lunch with suppliers. Meeting at the Ford Group at one in the afternoon. Don't be late.]
Two seconds after sending the message, the screen lit up again.
Wendy: [Got it.]
This brief reply made William so angry his face turned red.
What did that mean?
Earlier he'd sent her a friendly message and she didn't reply, but she instantly replied to a work message.
Was she trying to draw clear boundaries with him from now on?
William angrily threw his phone aside. "Take me home."
Jack quickly started the car.
On the other end, Wendy had actually seen William's first message when he sent it.
She thought about it for a long time but didn't reply. If this was before, when William was single, Wendy would have replied.
After all, they used to chat about all kinds of topics.
She and William had things in common.
But Wendy had seen the news saying that William and Evelyn were about to get engaged.
Wendy had feelings for William.
They'd also spent some happy times together.
But now she had no connection to the Moore family. She was an orphan, and to the Ford family, she was useless.
Actually, with William getting engaged, Wendy felt somewhat relieved. She didn't have to guess about their relationship anymore.
Didn't have to wonder whether William knew she was the one from that night.
It's fine, Wendy told herself.
Keeping her distance was the best approach now.
The next morning, William went to see Shirley.
It was time to get results about the birthmark investigation he'd asked her to do last time.
When Shirley saw it was William, her eyes lit up. Charlie said he'd pull strings to get her out, but there'd been no word for ages.
Finally William was here.
"About the birthmark, do you have results?" William got straight to the point.
Shirley was disappointed for a moment. She thought William had come for her, but he opened with questions about Wendy.
"Speak." William never had much patience for anyone besides Wendy.
Shirley's shoulders shook with fear as she said trembling, "Not yet."
William stood up directly and said coldly, "Then you can keep staying in here."
"No, no, I know someone who knows." Shirley was terrified and quickly called out to William.
William looked down at her from above and turned his head. "Speak."
"But you have to promise me one thing - get me out of here." Shirley gathered her courage to make a demand.
She wasn't sure if William would agree. She could only bet on how much Wendy meant to William.
William's eyes narrowed. "Fine."
Shirley immediately wrote down a string of numbers on paper. "This is Ruby's phone number. She used to be Wendy's nanny and has taken care of her since she was little. She definitely knows."
Good thing Lisa had found Ruby's number. Shirley had wanted to find her herself and use this secret to trade with William for some benefits.
But things didn't go as planned. Before she could find Ruby, she ended up in jail first.
Now she could only use this bargaining chip to trade for her freedom.
William took the number. "You can get out tomorrow."
Hearing this, Shirley was so excited she almost cried. She hadn't had a decent meal in so long.
But Shirley also felt sad inside. So, Wendy was important to William.
For Wendy, William could do anything.
Wendy didn't know about the things William was doing. She arrived early at the restaurant Jack had booked, waiting for the suppliers.
But after waiting forever, the suppliers didn't come - William did instead.
"Why are you here?" Wendy stood up, confused.
William said, "The suppliers had something come up at the last minute. They said they won't come for lunch and will just go straight to the conference room this afternoon."
"Okay." Wendy didn't think much of it.
Jack at the door pursed his lips, thinking to himself, 'Mr. Ford clearly planned to have lunch alone with Wendy. He never invited the suppliers at all. Now Mr. Ford lies without even blushing.'
The whole meal was Wendy's favorite dishes.
"You like this." William used the serving utensils to put food on Wendy's plate.
Wendy ate quietly. She felt a bit awkward being with William now.
"Wendy." William's suddenly serious tone made Wendy's heart skip a beat.
Wendy put down her utensils. "Mr. Ford, what is it?"
"Do you have some problem with me?"
Wendy shook her head. "No, what problem could I have with you?"
William was her boss - who would dare mess with him?
But William wasn't satisfied with her answer. "Then why have you been avoiding me lately?"
This question had been on William's mind for a long time. He wanted to know the reason.
"I, I haven't." Wendy's eyes darted away.
She thought, 'I can't exactly say Mr. Ford, you have a girlfriend now, so you should keep things proper.'
That would sound like Wendy was jealous.
But she and William had no relationship - what right did she have to be jealous?
"Tell the truth!" William's voice was commanding.
Wendy was stammering, about to speak, when Jack's anxious voice came from the doorway. "Ms. Landon, Mr. Ford is meeting with a client. You can't go in."
"What client? I probably know them too and could help. Let me in, or I'll have William fire you." Evelyn pointed her finger at Jack, aggressive and pushy.
Jack was sweating with anxiety, firmly blocking Evelyn. "Ms. Landon, this really isn't appropriate. You should go back."
"Tell me honestly - is William having lunch with a woman? Who is she? I'm going to smash her mouth in."
Evelyn had a violent temper. She shoved Jack aside and grabbed the door handle of the private room.
