What is Henry planning?
What is Henry planning?
When Simon Leclerc arrived home that evening, little Maite greeted him with that charming smile, running to his feet for her father to pick her up, followed by his wife coming out to greet him.
"Welcome home," she said, giving him two kisses on his lips. They settled in the living room, as every evening after he came home, and they had their afternoon tea together. "How was Alice's first day?" Sofia asked with keen interest. It was Alice's first job, and everyone was curious to know how it went. Her sisters had already talked amongst themselves, laughing at each other's comments because Alice had to work.
"She was clearly surprised to learn she would work with her ex-husband. I still don't understand how Henry let them divorce." Simon couldn't fathom why Henry would allow that. "But rumors spread fast, Sofia. You hadn't told me that Graham Group now belongs to the Taylors. How did that happen?" he took a sip of his tea, looking at his wife. "Although asking is pointless. But... wasn't a divorce too risky? I think the alliance with the Grahams was better than taking over their company, which I find to be a very low move, too dirty, even for your father. I doubt Robert Graham is very pleased. Was he the one who made such a tragic deal with Henry?"
"It was his father," Sofia was aware of everything, but she couldn't hide her surprise when Henry told her that Robert would work there, and Alice too. She tried to object, to say no, but that wasn't an option. She didn't want Robert near Alice. But there was no other choice. "It was Tom Graham who made that deal with my father. With the divorce finalized, the company passed to him."
"Well, well," he feigned surprise. Obviously, this was one of Henry Taylor's typical moves, but this one seemed easier than usual, even if it took a whole year. "And now he puts Robert there. You know that's in exchange for something, right?" it might be so, perhaps due to Robert's threats, but they didn't know about that. "I'm glad my office is far from theirs, I don't want to get splattered with the mess they'll make."
"I doubt it, Alice is very careful, I don't think she'll cause any scandal with Robert."
"Then I believe you don't know her very well. I'm telling you, nothing good will come out of this. They just got divorced, and suddenly they have to work together, something will come out of that, good or bad."
"If something comes out, it'll be bad, I assure you. All Alice feels is relief from being divorced."
"And now I understand why your father allowed the divorce, he wanted the company. Who's in charge?"
"Jared Sinclair. He already worked there before."
"Isn't he the one you told me Alice was dating? Your father is allowing many things with Alice, isn't he? Is he changing? A job, a divorce, a boyfriend not chosen by Henry. What's next?"
"I wonder the same thing. What's next? I don't know his plans, I don't know how he thinks, and I have no clue what he's plotting. What do you think of Robert? At least professionally."
"He's just arrived, there's much to see. I can't say anything right now. But as a person, he's pleasant, I already knew that."
Sofia put her tiny teacup on the center table and stood up, taking little Maite from her father's arms.
"I don't want you to be his friend, that's all I have to say. Stay away from Robert Graham. I don't like him, and I don't want you to like him either. Let that be clear, Simon."

Alice didn't want to see Jared that day; she had many things to think about. That same afternoon, she wanted to look for a house to move into, but she knew that would take time, and no, she wasn't in the mindset to start house hunting right now. There were too many impressions for one day, from now being a coworker to her ex-husband, who was also her boss, to the talk she had with Robert.
She heard her mother in the kitchen and went there.
"Oh, you're home, Alice!" She ran to give her a hug, excited for her daughter to tell her about her first day. But then she remembered Robert would also be there, and her enthusiasm faded, especially seeing the look on her daughter's face. Mentally, she was exhausted, and it showed in her expression, the tired slump of her shoulders, and the way she walked, as if her soul had been taken out before sending her home. "What's wrong, honey?"
"Why do you lie to me like this? What are you playing at? What do you want to do with my life?" she clung to her mother and cried silently. "You didn't tell me Robert would be there. And I'm under his supervision! What do you want from me? I've done everything, I don't want you to control me, your control over me ended when I divorced Robert, don't you get it? What's the reason for Robert working there? I want to know, mom."
"Those are matters between your father and Robert."
"And where's dad? He owes me an explanation for all of this. He told me he wanted me close to Simon, but he puts me close to Robert. I need to know why. Why aren't both of you honest with me? I'm not a child!" She thought her father might be in his study, and she headed there, opening the door after knocking.
"He's not home," his mother told him.
"Where has he gone?"
"He'll be out for a few days, Alice."
"A few days." She would have to wait a few days to confront her father about that job, where they put her away from Simon and close to Robert. "If his intention was for me to work, he could have placed me at Graham Group, but that's not his intention. He said it was to be close to Simon, and they put me near Robert. If he's planning a new direction for my life, it won't work out for him because I won't follow the path he wants to lay out for me."
"And what is that path? According to you, what is your father plotting?"
"The darkest thing is that I have no idea what he's planning, but it won't work out for him."
She went to her room where she started a video call with all her sisters to talk about her crappy day with her ex-husband.
She didn't know what her father was up to, but she was on the alert.
She didn't want any surprises.

He had grown a lot since she saw him months ago, those eyes reminded her of her youngest daughter's, so innocent, so genuine, that loving look, and the blond hair. He looked just like his mother.
They offered him to hold him, to carry him in his arms and feel his grandson, but he refused just like the last time; he didn't want to hold him.
"He has grown a lot," he commented.
"Yes, and he's very healthy, Mr. Taylor. Ethan is very healthy."
"I want to start the adoption process with the chosen couple. The lawyer will come next week."
"I will inform them, but they say they don't want to get paid, they just need a child and are very grateful."
"It's not for them, it's for the baby, so he has a better future. They can't refuse it, apply it as a condition for adoption."
"But sir..."
"No buts, Amanda. It will be done that way." He approached the crib once more where the baby played; his cheeks were chubby and he moved his legs gracefully while letting out some babble. He was enormous, beautiful, and had the same features as the Taylors, identical to his mother, except for that pointed nose, that was Robert's.
He watched him for a few seconds, looking at that perfect mix between Alice and Robert.
He felt no remorse, turned around, and left the way he had come.
He wouldn't back down on this; the fact that Ethan was alive was something that could never come to light.
The union with the Grahams was never meant to last, and a child made it eternal.
He already had what he was looking for, Graham Group.
