Chapter 10
Freya Rose I tried to call Tristan to warn him that Mason, Evan, and my dad were on their way to kill him.
“Hey, it's Tristan, I can't answer the phone right now, leave a message after the beep and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.”
For Christ's sake Tristan, I shouted in my head, while slamming the phone back down.
Ring, ring, ring...
“Tristan?” I called out over the phone.
“No, Freya it's me” replied my mom.
“Oh hey, mom I can't really talk right now, I...” I was going to say about Mason and the others, but she cut me off.
“I'll be quick, Tyler rang. Him, his father and another wolf are heading to Banff to stop Tristan. Tyler needs you to call him and give him Damien's address,” she said in a surprisingly controlled and calm manner.
“Thanks, mom, I'll call him now. Did he leave his number?” I asked, remembering that Tristan had my phone. She gave me the number then hung up. I sighed, I was a little relieved that Tyler and some of the pack were coming here to stop Tristan. I just hoped that they'd make it to him before Mason did. I should have flown after them, but I didn't even know how I managed to fly all the way here. I hadn't really thought about it, I just focused on Damien's cabin and my body seemed to do the rest. I'll call Tyler then head out, I decided.
Ring, ring, ring...
“Hello?” Tyler answered.
“Hey Ty, it's me,” I replied.
“Oh thank God Freya, what's your address, we think we have closed in on Tristan, but we are still about ten minutes behind him according to the tracker app. With the address, we might be able to find a shortcut and beat him to Damien's,” he said frantically but hopeful.
I hated to burst his bubble, but there wasn't time to skirt around the truth.
“You can have the address, but it won't make a blind bit of difference. You need to keep following Tristan, and try to catch up to him. Mason overheard me saying that Tristan was coming here to kill him. He saw it as a direct challenge. Tristan shouted 'bring it on' down the phone, and that was all the encouragement the three of them needed. They all ascended and flew off to find him, Tyler they're hunting him!” I shouted frantically. There was silence for a few seconds, but it felt like an eternity. “Tyler?” I screamed down the phone.
“I'm here... Okay, we'll stay on route then, he's ignoring my calls, but I'll leave him a message warning him. Hopefully, he will see that it's suicide going up against one hunter let alone three. I'll call you if we manage to catch him,” he sounded defeated already.
“I'm going to fly out to try and catch Mason, and the other two,” I let you know if I find them.
“Good idea, be careful, Freya,” he said with concern.
“I will. If you get to Tristan first, can you tell him that I love him, and that I'm sorry for everything?” I said holding back a sob, now is not the time to fall apart, I told myself.
“Yes, of course I will, good luck.”
We said our goodbyes then he hung up. I quickly ran outside and ascended, then flew up and into the air. I had no clue how I was going to find them, I focused on Tristan and my wings suddenly flew to the right, that's cool! I thought to myself, must be my own built in sat nav.
***
I flew over the woods, for about an hour or so, I must be getting close by now, I thought. I was focusing on Tristan, and where I was going so much, that I didn't realize I was being watched from the ground. I flew over her head and heard her gasp. I turned back to look at her, and she glowed in a bright blue light. It was like fire dancing all around her. She screamed when she saw that I'd noticed her. She froze as I turned around and hovered in the air watching her. I wanted to tell her not to be afraid and slowly lowered myself towards her, but she took off running. I don't know what came over me, I felt my heart race and electricity pulsed through my veins. An overwhelming need to hunt her, took over and I began the chase.
She ran fast, then to my surprise she shifted in mid-air, and I'd never seen anyone shift into a wolf so quickly. I watched her in awe, but I couldn't stop myself wanting to chase her, so I sped up and went lower into the trees. I was so focused on this beautiful little strawberry blond wolf, that Tristan and the others had completely slipped my mind. I was caught up in the hunt. I didn't know what I was going to do to her when I caught her, but the chase was so exhilarating. I didn't think at all of what was coming next.
I weaved in and out of the trees, and every second that passed by, I was gaining on her. She stood no chance against me, I wasn't even pushing myself yet, and I could tell that she was at full speed already. After a few more twists and turns she began to tire, and slow down. She darted to the right, so I slowed a little, and had to take a sharp turn to narrowly avoid hitting a tree. I then sped back up again, to catch up to her.
Being up in the air gave me the advantage of being able to see what was ahead of us, I looked up and saw a cliff edge. The little strawberry blond wolf had no idea that it was coming. I didn't want her falling off the edge, so I slowed right down and lowered myself to the floor. It's a good job Evan gave me a quick landing lesson, I giggled to myself. I walked through the woods towards where I knew the little wolf was heading. As I got into the clearing I saw her, she was panicking and sprinting along the cliff edge trying to find an escape route, and when she spotted me she took off back into the woods.
“Ahhhhh-oooooo.”
I heard a high pitch howl, and I quickly ran after her, and then gasped when I saw that she'd got her paw stuck in a bear trap. She saw me and started pulling at her leg, and howling out in pain. It was horrendous to watch; my hunting instinct had thankfully been overtaken by my humanity and compassion. I edged closer to her with my hands held out in front of me, trying to let her know that I meant her no harm. Her eyes grew wider in fear the closer I got to her. I thought it best that I calm myself down, so, I began my breathing exercises and eventually my wings faded, and my eyes returned to normal. She cowered in front of me watching my every move. I made sure I went really slowly, and then crouched down in front of her.
“I'm sorry I chased you. I'm Freya Rose,” I said softly as I held my hand out for her to sniff. She cautiously brought her head forward and took in a deep sniff. She sneezed and it made me chuckle. She shook her head and then let out a whimper as it had yanked on her paw. “Will you promise not to run if I get this off of you?” I asked her while pointing at the bear trap.
She nodded, but I didn't believe her. I put my hands on either side of the trap and pulled as hard as I could.
“I do really want to help you, I promise. I can take you to my boyfriend's pack, they have a doctor there, she'll get you patched up in no time,” I said calmly as I pulled harder on the trap.
She turned her head to the side, and I hoped that would be enough to convince her to trust me, letting her know my boyfriend was also a werewolf. I managed to pop open the trap enough for her to pull her paw free. She sat there for a few minutes licking her paw and I actually thought she might let me help her. But nope, as soon as she'd finished cleaning the blood from her paw, she cautiously stood up on her three good paws, and then made a run for it.
I fought the hunters urge to chase after her, and just sat cross-legged on the floor watching her run into the distance. I saw her turn back around and look at me, and I think she expected me to chase her again, and then kill her. Instead, I stood up, turned around and walked in the opposite direction. I ascended, and then flew up into the air and focused on Tristan again, I knew he was close, I could feel it.
***
I flew for another half an hour or so, when I suddenly heard a car beeping off in the distance. As I flew closer I could hear it screeching and revving. I flew over the treetops and spotted the road, and there it was. Tristan's mustang was swerving all over the road, and it was going at a crazy speed. I sped up and then spotted Mason, Damien and Evan flying behind Tristan's car. Their eyes were glowing brighter than the moon.
I could tell that they were in full on hunt mode. I decided to do the only thing I could think of. I flew right over the top of Tristan's car and then landed on the roof, slamming my feet down onto it. I crouched down and held one arm out to steady myself as I inhaled the biggest breath I'd ever inhaled in my life.
“Stop!”
I screeched so loud; the windows of the car shattered sending glass shards everywhere. I could hear Tristan screaming out in pain, and the car began to swerve out of control. It swerved to the left and then took a sharp turn back to the right. Suddenly it hit a pothole, that sent us hurtling into the air. I was violently flung off of the car, and crashed into the ground, before rolling a few times until I came to a stop in the dirt. I lifted myself up to rest on one of my arms, and gasped as I watched Tristan's car flip over and over again. Finally, the car smashed into a tree, bringing it to a complete standstill.
“Tristan!” I screamed as I tried to crawl towards the car. Damien reached me first and tried to pull me away. “Get the fuck off of me!” I yelled at him.
He backed up, while holding his hands up. Behind him stood Evan, I then spotted Mason land. He wasted no time and stormed towards me. Damien and Evan had descended, and were in their human form again. Mason, on the other hand, was more seething than ever. While still in his ascended form, he glared right past me, at Tristan's car. I fought through all of my pain, and stood up holding myself high and strong.
“You come one step closer, and I swear to the archangel's, I will end you right now!” I screamed at him.
He stopped and stood there staring at me with his head tilted. I extended my wings as far as they would possibly go, and illuminated my eyes to within an inch of their lives. The driver's door on Tristan's car unexpectedly popped open, and it instantly lured Mason's gaze away from mine. My heart jumped with joy that Tristan was at least alive, he’s got shit timing, I thought to myself. I almost had Mason listening to me, now he was zoned out again, caught up in the hunt.
“I'm not playing Mason! You lay one hand on him, and I will fucking rip you apart,” I screeched at him in the highest pitch voice I had ever heard in my life.
Even Damien and Evan covered their ears. Mason stopped immediately, then glanced at me. He blinked a few times, and I could tell that he was struggling with his hunting instincts and his angel side.
“Please, Mason don't do this!” I begged him as I threw myself into his arms.
He promptly held on to me to stop me from falling. I buried my head into his chest and began to sob. He proceeded to stroke my hair, trying to comfort me. He rested his cheek on the top of my head, and I felt his wings wrap around me, they were so warm and comforting. He was slowly beginning to calm down and his heart rate was returning to normal.
“Get your filthy hands off of my mate! She is mine!” Tristan growled from behind me.
In an instant, Mason was back to full-on ascension form again. He roughly heaved me behind him and stretched his massive wings out, Tristan began to shift in response.
“Tristan, no!” I screamed out, knowing that Tristan's shift would be seen as a direct threat.
Mason screeched into the sky, while Evan and Damien groaned and writhed around behind me. I turned to glance at them and gasped. I saw them fighting tooth and nail to stop themselves from ascending.
This is bad, this is very bad, I thought to myself. If they both ascend too, there is no way I can hold three of them off, they'll rip Tristan limb from limb. I tried to think of something I could do, but the only thing I could think of would only bide us a few more seconds or minutes at the most.
I jumped right in the middle of Tristan and Mason's line of view, hoping that seeing me stuck in the middle of them would somehow snap them out of it. It didn't, and neither of them paid me any attention at all, they were both too focused on each other. I thought of one last thing that might work to distract them, it was risky, and I wished I didn't have to do it, but if they started fighting I would lose them both. Mason would kill Tristan, then I knew that I would kill him in revenge. I sprinted to the side of the road and picked up a big chunk of metal that had been ripped away from the car.
I held it tightly with both hands, blood immediately dripping down between my fingers as the sharp metal edges cut through my skin. The blood slid down the mangled metal and dripped onto the ground. Tristan sniffed the air and turned his head in my direction. His eyes were filled with fear as he watched me place the point of the metal shard onto my stomach. It was working though, and I finally had his full attention.
“Freya, no!” Damien screamed out, making Mason quickly turn to look at me.
Mason held up his hands and slowly edged towards me.
“Freya don't do anything stupid,” Mason said while still edging towards me.
“Stupid!? Stupid is trying to kill the man I love, then expecting me to fall into your arms afterwards. If you kill him, I'll kill myself, then neither you, nor Prince Balan can have me!” I screamed at him, my hands shaking with fear and anger.
Tristan shifted back to his human form, and his sudden shift distracted Mason, making his wings fly open again.
“Baby please don't do this; I won't fight him I promise. Please just put that down. We can go home, okay. I love you Freya,” he said while walking closer to me.
As quick as a flash Mason charged towards him screaming, “She’s mine!”
Without even thinking about it, I reacted and plunged the metal deep into my stomach, screaming out as the excruciating pain swept over me. Luckily, Evan was there to catch me before I hit the ground.
“Angel cakes, what have you done?” He asked in a low voice, as he held my head gently on his lap.
I let out a weak giggle, and replied in a scratchy voice,
“I had to do something badass to get their attention.”
He chuckled then furrowed his brow as he wiped away some blood that had started seeping out of my mouth.
“Well, that was definitely badass, Angel cakes. I can safely say, that nobody else would have had the guts to do that,” he replied with a slight smirk, not knowing if he'd taken the joke too far, considering I had a large piece of metal currently sticking out of my gut.
“Too far?” He asked, I chuckled and held my fingers up to indicate a little.
He laughed again, and I tried to join in, but I began coughing because of all of the blood. Tristan arrived and knelt down beside me, shortly followed by Mason and Damien. Tristan took my hand and brushed my hair away from my face.
“Baby, I'm so sorry, this is all my fault,” Tristan said as he kissed my hand.
“I know now's not the best time, but I need to know. Tell me that you don't love me, and I will walk away, for good,” Mason said as he lowered his head. Tristan shot him a glare and growled.
I took Mason's hand, so that I was holding them both.
“I'm sorry Mason, I don't love you. I love Tristan, it has always been Tristan,” I said softly as I broke his heart.
I heard a car screech up and we all turned to look. Tyler came running up and slid along the grass to get to me.
“Freya what the hell happened? Who did this to you?” He yelled out while eyeing up Mason, Damien and Evan. They all glared at him back, for Christ's sake, men, I thought to myself.
“Me! I did it to myself,” I choked out.
“Why would you do that?” He asked in confusion.
“Enough with the questions Ty, can't you see she's struggling,” Alpha Aiden said in a harsh tone.
I expected him to be happy with this situation, with me out the way his son could move on and give the pack a normal Luna. But he wasn't, he was worried about me and his face was riddled with sadness. I guess he does care for me after all, I thought to myself. Landon was there too, even he had a look of sadness. He flashed me a small smile and I replied with one of my own. He then suddenly turned his head towards the woods.
“Is my smile that bad?” I managed to choke out my little joke, knowing that my teeth were covered in blood. Tyler followed Landon's gaze and growled,
“There's a rogue wolf watching us.”
Everyone snapped their heads in the direction of the woods. Tyler shot up and went to shift.
“No!” Damien shouted at him.
“He's right son, shifting will be too much for them to handle,” Aiden said looking at Evan, Damien and Mason.
Tyler nodded his head and started to run in human form instead, followed by Aiden and Landon. I couldn't see the wolf; I think I was too weak to see that far. I winced when I heard a wolf scream, then it all went silent.
“Oh no, did they kill it? Did they?” I asked looking up at Tristan.
“Rogues are usually very nasty and violent; they don't have a pack for a good reason. I wouldn't waste your tears on one of them baby,” Tristan said as he wiped away one of my tears.
I turned my head to see Aiden and Tyler emerge from the woods. Landon followed behind them carrying a woman's naked body, I closed my eyes and sobbed gently.
“Why is she crying?” Landon asked in a cold tone.
“She's upset about the wolf you just killed,” Evan snapped at him defending me.
“We didn't kill her Freya, she's alive, look,” Tyler said as he sat back down on the grass.
I raised my eyes and looked at Landon, he had a massive grin on his face and said, “She's fine, she just fainted when I yelled mate at her,” he chuckled to himself as he carried the small, and very naked, strawberry blond woman back to the car.
