Chapter 70 The Sense of Security Has Arrived
Chapter 70 The Sense of Security Has Arrived
Evelyn's POV
My consciousness drifted through chaos. I felt like I was floating in a silver ocean, surrounded by endless gentleness and calm.
That feeling was both strange and familiar, like returning to the very source of life.
I remember I was healing that injured girl, wasn't I? Suddenly the magic inside me felt like it was awakened by some force, and then came the blinding white light.
My body felt drained of all strength, and then I seemed to fall.
When I finally regained sensation in my body, the first thing I felt was a strong wave of magic, followed by a warm touch in my palms—the poisoned girl's skin, now gradually coming back to life under my healing.
I could clearly feel my life force transforming into the purest healing energy, flowing continuously into her body.
This seemed similar to when I usually healed wounds, but also somehow different.
I looked down, and what met my eyes were no longer human hands, but a pair of hooves covered in snow-white fur. The fur was white as snow, and in the sunlight streaming through the window, every strand seemed to shimmer with a faint glow.
Even more amazing, I could feel something on top of my head growing slightly warm, carrying a sense of sacred and ancient power.
Antlers? I couldn't see myself, but I had a strong feeling.
A pair of silver antlers flowing with starlight were now gracefully extending from my forehead. The tips radiated gentle yet powerful healing energy, and tiny starlight vines had somehow wound around them, swaying gently with my breathing.
"So... this is my power."
I murmured to myself, both shocked and somewhat enlightened.
Watching the silver starlight flow along the antlers, turning into points of light that entered the girl's body, the poison that had invaded her was being cleared away bit by bit. The girl's face changed from a terrible blue-purple to a healthy flush, and her weak breathing became steady and strong.
I really did save her, thank goodness.
But... after the girl was saved, when I wanted to change back to my original form, an unprecedented panic instantly gripped my heart. I found I didn't know what to do.
That massive magic power was rampaging through my body but couldn't find an outlet. My body seemed fixed by some ancient force, only able to maintain this deer form, unable to move.
"What do I do..."
I lifted my head, looking around at the people in panic. Celia stood not far away, her face full of shock and... helplessness.
And those classmates were even more like they'd been frozen in place, staring at me blankly. Their eyes held amazement and awe, but nothing that could help me.
"Kane..."
I helplessly called out that name in my heart. If only he were here.
Just as I felt desperate and lost, the classroom door was violently thrown open.
A loud crash, and a familiar figure rushed in.
It was Kane.
He must have run here in a panic. I don't know how he learned about my situation, but I saw anxiety in his expression, and he hadn't even put on his jacket.
The moment I saw Kane's gaze fall on me, a feeling of relief replaced my earlier unease.
"Evelyn."
He called my name softly, his voice carrying a barely noticeable tremor.
He didn't rage like before. He just looked at me, his eyes full of concern and tenderness, and the moment I saw him, I was willing to show my fear.
"Don't be afraid."
He walked toward me step by step, his shoes making dull sounds on the messy floor.
"I'm here."
He came before me, slowly crouched down, reached out his hand, hesitated for a moment, then gently stroked my neck.
"Come on, look at me."
His voice was low and gentle, carrying a magic that calmed me down. My heart gradually settled.
"Take a deep breath."
"Imagine your magic is like a river, flowing out from the tips of your antlers, then slowly, slowly drawing back."
"Back into your body, back into your heart."
"Picture your original form, little by little, take your time."
I looked at him and tried to do as he said. Closed my eyes, cleared my mind, felt the flow of magic in my body.
That wild power, under his guidance, gradually became tame. Following my will, it slowly withdrew back into the depths of my body.
The antlers on my head began to heat up, then slowly shrank, and finally disappeared.
The snow-white fur on my body also gradually faded away, replaced by the familiar feeling of skin and the friction of fabric.
When I opened my eyes again, I had changed back to human form.
Sure enough, Kane could always guide me well, making all my worries disappear.
But the side effects of forcibly overusing magic followed.
My head spun with dizziness, my legs went weak, and my whole body uncontrollably fell toward the cold floor.
Kane didn't say anything, but steadily caught me and held me tightly in his arms.
His embrace was warm and strong, carrying his familiar scent, making me feel incredibly safe.
"It's okay now."
He said softly in my ear, patting my back again and again, like comforting a frightened young animal. "You did great, Evelyn. You were amazing. Too bad I didn't see your transformation right away—it must have been super beautiful."
"And it's my fault for not being with you. I shouldn't have let you come to class alone."
"Evelyn, never again. I'll always be here. You'll always be safe."
I leaned against his chest, listening to his racing heartbeat. Kane seemed even more nervous than me.
"Just now I..."
I choked out, my voice hoarse. "I thought I couldn't change back... I thought you wouldn't recognize me..."
"Never."
"No matter what form you take, I'll recognize you. I definitely will."
Kane lowered his head and kissed my forehead, his movement incredibly gentle. "With me here, I'll never let anything happen to you. I swear."
With that, he scooped me up in his arms and strode toward the classroom door with firm, powerful steps.
I leaned weakly in his arms, catching glimpses of the classmates in the hallway, Celia, and Esko who had rushed over with a medical kit. They all stood frozen there, eyes full of surprise, watching Kane carry me out.
His eyes held only me.
He carried me through the crowd, through the hallway, through those curious gazes, all the way back to his room.
"Rest well."
He carefully placed me on the soft bed, tucking in the corners of the blanket. "I'm right here, not going anywhere."
He sat by the bed, holding my hand, his gaze firm and gentle, not leaving my face for a moment.
"I'll keep watching over you, always by your side."
I couldn't help but close my eyes. Perhaps I had used too much energy earlier. Under his warm gaze, I gradually drifted into sleep.
