Chapter 69 Out-of-Control Guardianship
Chapter 69 Out-of-Control Guardianship
Kane's POV
This week of being confined to my room has been pure torture. Every inch of air in the room carries a suffocating stillness. I wouldn't have minded before, but now I'm not alone anymore.
Though I don't know if Evelyn still sees it that way.
I promised Evelyn that except for taking her to class and breakfast, I wouldn't step foot outside the room.
But every second apart makes me anxious and restless. I want to see Evelyn, I want to touch her, I want to kiss her, but I can't. I have to stay in this room.
I need to give her peace of mind, to let her know that I can learn restraint and patience for her sake too.
I don't care about the school's demands and rules, but I care about Evelyn.
To kill this long, boring time, I buried myself in books.
I went through every book on the shelf and all the ancient texts the academy automatically provided, wanting to use this time to really understand Evelyn's species. The academy knows I'm doing this for Evelyn, which is why they're being so nice to me.
"What type of shapeshifter is Evelyn exactly?"
I stared at those obscure words on the pages, my brow furrowed.
Her healing abilities, the aura she occasionally shows, and my earlier assessment that she should be a mammalian shapeshifter.
But after going through all the materials, I still came up empty.
I couldn't find any book that could give me the right answer, just as mysterious as the Phoenix Clan with no records to be found.
"Why is that..."
I irritably closed a thick volume of Ancient Records and angrily tossed it aside.
Since I can't find answers, I'll find something else to do.
I walked to the corner of the room and opened a small chest filled with all kinds of rare treasures.
I wanted to see if there was anything suitable to give Evelyn as a gift.
She accepted the earrings before, but I still feel like I need to give her another present.
Just as I was rummaging through those treasures, the room door was suddenly blown open by a tremendous force.
"Bang!"
The loud noise startled me. I figured no one would be stupid enough to come looking for trouble like before.
Before I could react, the academy's alarm system let out a piercing beep, and the room door shook violently.
In that instant, my heart skipped a beat. Something must have happened to Evelyn.
Only she would trigger this level of alarm from the academy's system. After all, I know the academy doesn't like me that much—or rather, nobody likes me except Evelyn.
"Damn it!"
I ran like crazy toward the Basic Potions classroom. The wind roared in my ears, but I didn't care. I had this intense feeling of dread.
"Wait for me... Evelyn... please be okay..."
When I burst into the classroom, I saw complete chaos—tables and chairs overturned, equipment shattered, dark green poison and broken glass all over the floor.
The air was thick with the pungent smell of sulfur and burning.
And in the center of the classroom, surrounded by a group of terrified students and a pale-faced Celia.
"Move!"
My voice trembled, but the anger radiating from me made everyone around step back.
However, when I saw clearly the figure surrounded in the middle, I froze completely.
It was a deer, or rather, it was Evelyn.
A deer so breathtakingly beautiful, yet full of divinity and majesty.
Its entire body was covered in snow-white fur that sparkled like crushed diamonds in the sunlight. On its head grew a pair of silver antlers, their tips glowing with a faint light, wrapped with tiny starlight vines.
Its eyes—those were light brown eyes. Clear, sharp, gentle, yet tinged with confusion and helplessness.
Those were Evelyn's eyes. I could never mistake them.
"This... this is..."
A Steldeer? The legendary Steldeer?
That's a creature that only exists in myths, said to possess the ability to heal all wounds.
And they're extremely rare, even thought to be extinct.
"Kane..."
Celia saw me, and her expression eased slightly, though still full of gravity.
"Those guys just now... knocked over a highly toxic potion that splashed onto a student."
She pointed to a girl on the floor who had regained consciousness and was trembling. "Just when she was about to die, Ms. Gray rushed over."
"And then... she turned into this."
I took a deep breath, forcing down the shock in my heart, and walked step by step toward that snow-white deer.
As if sensing my presence, Evelyn suddenly raised her head.
Seeing me, her ears twitched. I was afraid she wouldn't let me touch her, especially after this week...
But she looked at me and made a soft sound. I couldn't help but reach out my hand to touch her.
My hand, suspended in mid-air, trembled slightly. "Evelyn, you're so beautiful! I..."
Before I could finish, she moved her slender legs and walked toward me.
She came up to me, lowered her head, and gently nuzzled my chest with those silver antlers.
That sensation—warm and soft, carrying Evelyn's unique scent.
"Evelyn..."
I reached out my hand, trembling as I stroked her snow-white neck.
The fur felt delicate and smooth. I was so happy she didn't reject me.
"Don't be afraid, I'm here."
I said softly, my voice carrying a barely noticeable catch. "I'm here."
The surrounding students gasped, but I didn't care what they were saying. I only cared about Evelyn.
I turned around and coldly swept my gaze across the crowd.
"Seen enough?"
My voice wasn't loud, but it carried undeniable authority.
"Get out."
Those students were startled by my look and fled the classroom one after another.
Even those guys who caused the accident were chased out by a grim-faced Celia.
Soon, only Evelyn and I remained in the classroom.
I crouched down, looking directly into those light brown eyes. "Evelyn, can you hear me?"
Evelyn blinked, seeming to understand what I said.
She nodded, then shook her head, her eyes full of grievance and helplessness.
"Can't change back?" I paused, remembering what I'd read in the ancient texts. This was probably her first awakening transformation, and under extremely urgent circumstances, she had forcibly exhausted her life force to heal. For a Steldeer transforming for the first time, trying to control this form all at once was indeed too difficult.
"It's okay."
I reached out and gently hugged her neck, burying my face in her soft fur.
"It's okay, Evelyn."
"I'll teach you, I'll be with you. This is something you instinctively know how to do. Just relax slowly."
