Chapter 69
FLASHBACK
Three days after the wedding, the air in Jacob and Noemi's home still buzzed with the lingering joy of their celebration.
Noemi was adorned in the simplicity of her white wedding gown, she moved about the living room, adjusting a few leftover decorations and smiling at the memories that beautified every corner.
The doorbell chimed, and Noemi's heart quickened. She knew who it was, Lisa.
They had been friends for years, and Lisa had been an integral part of Noemi's journey, even if their paths had taken unexpected turns.
However, when Noemi opened the door, she was greeted by Lisa's familiar smile. "Hey, newlywed! How is married life treating you?"
Noemi laughed, the sound musical and genuine. "It's been amazing, girlfriend. I never thought I'd be this happy."
Lisa stepped inside, carrying a gift bag decorated with a cheerful bow. "Well, I came bearing gifts for the happy couple."
Noemi's eyes sparkled with curiosity as she accepted the bag. "You did not have to, Lisa. But thank you."
After a few more gist, they settled on the couch, the air filled with a comfortable warmth that only old friends could share.
Lisa looked around, as she took in the post-wedding glow that infused the space.
"So, spill the beans. How was the honeymoon?" Lisa nudged playfully.
Noemi turned red, her smile was infectious. "It was like a dream. We went to this quaint little cottage by the sea. Just the two of us, surrounded by waves and each other."
Lisa grinned. "Sounds like a fairy tale. I am happy for you, Noemi. You deserve all the happiness in the world."
As the conversation flowed, they reminisced about their shared history, the highs and lows, the laughter and tears. The bond between them seemed to transcend time and circumstance.
"So, what is next for the happy couple?" Lisa asked, her eyes gleaming with curiosity.
Noemi glanced at her wedding ring for the first time, the symbol of a new chapter. "We are taking things one step at a time. Jacob and I are excited to build our life together, and face whatever challenges come our way."
Lisa nodded in agreement, her expression thoughtful. "I am glad to hear that. You deserve every bit of happiness, darling."
The day unfolded with a leisurely pace, filled with laughter, shared stories, and the unspoken comfort of friendship. Lisa had brought a board game, one they used to play during their college days.
They spent hours engrossed in the game, the competitive banter and friendship were reminiscent of simpler times.
As evening approached, Noemi suggested ordering dinner from their favourite local restaurant.
They sat around the dining table, and the aroma of the delicious food filled the air. Nevertheless, the conversation flowed effortlessly, with a blend of recollections and excitement for the future.
In the midst of their laughter, Lisa's expression shifted, like a momentary cloud crossing her features. Noemi noticed the change and inquired, "Is everything okay, Lisa?"
Lisa hesitated before responding, her voice was measured. "There is something I need to tell you, Noemi. It's been on my mind for a while."
Noemi's brow furrowed in concern. "What is it? You can tell me anything, Lisa."
Lisa took a deep breath. "I have been working on a project for some time now, something relating to my work, more like a project. I did not want to involve you until I had more information, but it is important that you know."
Noemi's eyes widened with curiosity and a touch of apprehension. "What project? What are you talking about? Make me understand better."
Lisa glanced around as if gauging the weight of her words. "I have been looking into opening a new branch or expanding the shop, Noemi. Trying to improve everything to attract more customers and make more sales. I wanted to find a way for people to reconnect and believe in my brand."
Noemi's heart skipped a beat, a mix of emotions swirling within her. "Wow, Lisa, that is thoughtful of you. So tell me, what is your proposition."
Lisa met with Noemi's gaze and sincerity in her eyes. "Hmmm… I really do not know much right now Noemi. I have seen how much the lack of being known and connected has affected the brand. And there is something more, I have discovered that someone has been trying to manipulate our lingering customers against us."
Noemi's mind raced, a thousand questions flooding her thoughts. "Who? Who would do something like that? Do you have any slightest idea of who it could be?"
Lisa's expression tightened. "I don't have all the answers yet, but I am determined to find out. First, I need your opinion and advice, Noemi. This is bigger than what I could sit down and plan myself."
Noemi took a moment to absorb the gravity of Lisa's disclosure. The complexities of her business seemed to unfold like a puzzle, and the pieces were scattered, waiting to be put together.
As the evening wore on, Lisa shared the details of her little investigation, the mysterious threats, the attempts to keep her customers away from her brand, and the web of deception that had entangled the vicinity of her workplace.
Meanwhile, Noemi listened, with a mix of shock and sincerity colouring her features. "Lisa, I had no idea there's someone somewhere trying to see you sad because the person is clearly jealous. I promise to support you in any way I can, just the way you have always done for me."
Lisa nodded, her eyes reflecting a determination to unravel the truth. "I am sure We will get through this together, girlfriend. I promise."
"Yeah, that's the spirit, I love that," Noemi said excitedly.
The night deepened, the glow of friendship and shared secrets binding them in a cocoon of trust. As Lisa prepared to leave, she hugged Noemi tightly.
"Take care, Bestie. I will keep you updated, and we will figure this out."
Noemi smiled, with genuine gratitude in her eyes. "Alright, Lisa. I am lucky to have you in my life."
As Lisa left, Noemi stood in the doorway, the weight of the revelations settling around her. And the night seemed to hold the promise of answers and the challenge of confronting the shadows lurking in the darkness.
