Chapter 49 Astonishment
Soon, the Lewis family arrived at the hospital one after another.
Nora saw them and smiled smugly. She thought, 'Queenie, you're finished!'
She pretended to be anxious and ran to Austin's side. "Austin, I'm afraid we can't hide it anymore. Uncle Bruce and Uncle Caleb have both come." Bruce Lewis was Austin's second uncle, and Caleb Lewis was Austin's third uncle.
Austin remained calm.
Nora asked anxiously, "Austin, what should we do?"
The quick arrival of the Lewis family made it impossible to doubt Nora's expressions and actions. And she had been by Austin's side all along.
"Austin!" A group of people rushed out of the elevator and headed straight for Austin. Austin didn't have time to think about what to do. "You're here. How is your grandfather?"
Nora covered her face and cried, "Uncle Bruce, Aunt Cathy, Uncle Caleb, Aunt Brenda, Aunt Bella, don't worry. The doctors are treating Grandpa. I believe he will recover soon."
Cathy Lewis, Bruce's wife, was impatient. "Which doctor? I heard Queenie is back. Is she inside?"
James Lewis, Cathy's son, also developed a liking for Queenie. Cathy disliked Queenie even more. She didn't understand why Derek, Mary, and Austin's parents were so pleased with Queenie. She was just an average girl from an ordinary background. Moreover, Queenie was ugly, and Cathy felt that she was a disgrace to the Lewis family.
James always liked beautiful girls, but he fell for Queenie, who was both ugly and fat. Cathy found it very strange. After much thought, Cathy found a reason. James was deliberately opposing Austin because they had once fought over Nora.
Caleb said, "Austin, tell the truth. Is Queenie inside?"
Austin's face darkened. "Yes!"
"What is she doing inside?" Brenda Lewis, Caleb's wife, screamed.
"Austin, you shouldn't do this. We are your elders. Your wife came back, but you didn't tell us. You disrespect us," Caleb and Brenda said, standing aside.
In fact, they were afraid that Queenie would persuade Derek and Mary to divide the family's property for her. As Derek's son and daughter-in-law, they felt they should stay by Derek's side and not miss a word he said.
"Why didn't you call the doctor?" Bruce asked angrily.
Bella Lewis, Derek and Mary's eldest daughter, was always arrogant and rude. Nobody dared to provoke her. Mary and Derek were helpless with their daughter too. Bella said angrily, "Bruce, Caleb, don't waste your time with them. Let's go and see Dad first."
Then, she blamed Austin, "Why did you do this? Something so important happened, yet you didn't inform us. If it wasn't for me and your uncles worrying about your grandfather every day, he would have passed away without us by his side. If outsiders find out, they will mock us. They will think we didn't care enough for your grandfather."
Austin saw through everyone's greed and scheming. He thought, 'Not one of them cares about Grandpa.' From the time their grandfather was hospitalized, they had started to think about their own interests. It's not strange for them to come now.
"Uncle Bruce, Aunt Cathy, Uncle Caleb, Aunt Brenda, Aunt Bella," Nora said gently, extending her hand. "Don't blame Austin. He is also worried about Grandfather. As the Lewis family, we should stand united against outsiders."
Nora's words were meaningful. They were the Lewis family, except for Queenie. Everyone was intelligent. And they all liked Nora.
"Nora, don't cry. Your grandfather will be fine," Cathy said. She hoped Nora would marry James, but Nora liked Austin instead. James was not as outstanding as Austin, which made Cathy angry.
Now, Nora had her own place in the entertainment industry. Despite her age, she was popular. She earned money and attracted attention. If James could marry Nora, everyone in Imperick would envy him. Cathy thought James still had a chance, assuming Austin and Nora didn't get married.
Nora was gentle and good at pleasing others. "Aunt Cathy, I'm just worried about grandfather. You, Uncle Bruce, Uncle Caleb, and Aunt Bella must be tired from coming here at night."
"You're really considerate," Cathy held Nora's hand.
Nora said these words to buy time, she thought, 'If Grandfather dies later, everyone will be surprised. Queenie is doomed.'
Intentional murder was punishable by death in the country. If the Lewis family seized the opportunity, they wouldn’t easily let Queenie go.
"Nora, you look pale. Have you been staying up taking care of Grandfather?"
Nora whispered, "I haven't taken care of Grandfather for a long time. I've been feeling tired recently."
"..."
Most members of the Lewis family liked Nora because she was gentle and famous. Everyone gathered around her to chat.
Austin took the opportunity to secretly tell Sam, "Find a way to get the doctor into Grandfather's room. We must make sure he wakes up."
Sam felt troubled. "Mr. Lewis, this is the only entrance to the room. It's difficult to get the doctor in."
"I'm here. We can do it."
Austin planned to use Nora to stabilize their elders with the interests of the company. Then, Sam would find an opportunity to take the doctor to the room. He also needed to tell Mary to keep the door open. He called Mary, but she didn't answer the phone. He tried to conceal his worries and walked outside the hospital room. Seeing this, the Lewis family stopped chatting with Nora and followed him.
Austin halted everyone and said coldly, "Grandma has said that nobody should enter without her permission."
Bruce and Caleb exchanged glances, and Bruce spoke in the same tone, "Our father is inside. Why can't we go in? Austin, we are your elders, do you dare to disrespect us? Can you take responsibility if something happens to your grandpa?"
Caleb said, "Austin, are you afraid of us going in? Did you do something to your grandpa when we weren't around?"
Austin didn't say anything, but just stood in front of the hospital room door, with a furrowed brow. He seemed to emit an unsettling chill.
Now, he was the head of the Lewis family, and even his uncles and aunts were wary of him.
"Well then, we will wait here. If anything happens, Austin, you will have to take responsibility, because Queenie is your wife."
Hearing someone say that Queenie was Austin's wife, Nora bit her lip in anger.
At that moment, the door of the hospital room opened and Mary came out. "What are you all arguing about?"
"Mom," everyone said respectfully.
"Mom." Bruce and Caleb approached and grabbed Mary's arm. "How is Dad? Why didn't you inform us about this?"
Tears welled up in Bella's eyes as she said, "Mom, we want to go in and see Dad."
Mary looked sharply at them and coldly snorted, "As long as you don't disturb your dad, he can live a few more days."
"Mom!"
Seeing that everyone's attention was no longer on Queenie, Nora timely asked, "Grandma, has Queenie cured Grandpa?"
Everyone came back to their senses and began blaming Queenie.
"Mom, what's wrong with you? How could you let Queenie treat Dad?"
"I never heard about Queenie knowing medicine."
"That's right."
"Mom..."
While everyone was discussing, Queenie came out from inside, looking exhausted.
Nora comforted everyone, saying, "Uncle Bruce, Aunt Cathy, Uncle Caleb, Aunt Brenda, Aunt Bella, don't blame Queenie. She just came back and wanted to take care of Grandpa and Grandma. I believe she must have cured Grandpa."
Nora deliberately praised Queenie. If Queenie hadn't cured Derek, she would be in trouble. "Queenie, is Grandpa okay?"
Queenie knew Nora's malicious thoughts. She smiled and didn't pay attention to them.
When they saw the Queenie in front of them, they were surprised and scared. They thought, 'Is this Queenie?'
Before they could recover, Queenie calmly said, "Ms. Lewis, thank you for believing in me. I didn't disappoint everyone. Grandpa's condition has improved. You can go in and see him now."
Nora was shocked.
Austin was also shocked, his eyes shining as he stared at Queenie.
