Chapter 180: Crossing the Threshold

Chapter 180: Crossing the Threshold
Dawn broke slowly over the mountain pass.
Mist clung to the slopes like a thin veil, drifting between the jagged rocks that surrounded the ancient portal outpost. The air was colder here than in the kingdoms below, carrying the quiet weight of a place that had witnessed centuries of guarded crossings between worlds.
The portal site had been built long ago for a single purpose.
To watch.
To guard.
And, when necessary, to open the path between realms.
Stone pillars encircled the clearing, each one etched with protective markings placed there by priests and seers from generations past. Their faded runes glowed faintly in the morning light, evidence that the magic of the place had never truly faded.
Today the outpost was far busier than usual.
Guards from the Western Kingdom stood at attention around the perimeter, their armor catching the pale sunlight. Messengers moved between the small stone structures of the outpost while soldiers prepared the ceremonial standards that would accompany the delegation.
The summit had been accepted.
And the Lion Kingdoms were ready to answer.
Kenneth Paige XII stepped onto the stone platform at the center of the clearing, his sharp gaze taking in the preparations.
Beside him walked Lucy.
Though she was not part of the official delegation, she had insisted on accompanying Kenneth to the portal site before their departure. As Regina of the Western Kingdom, she had every right to witness the crossing.
Ryan Foster arrived moments later, his long cloak shifting in the cool mountain wind.
“The Northern escort reached the pass before sunrise,” he reported.
Kenneth nodded.
“Good.”
Ryan glanced toward the stone arch that stood at the far end of the clearing.
Even dormant, the structure carried an unsettling presence.
Two massive stone pillars rose nearly twenty feet into the air, connected by a curved arch carved with ancient symbols. The surface of the stone looked weathered, yet faint traces of magical energy flickered across it like dying embers.
“That thing always gives me the feeling it’s watching,” Ryan muttered.
Lucy crossed her arms thoughtfully.
“That is because it is not merely a doorway.”
Ryan looked toward her.
“Oh?”
“The portal is bound to the barrier between realms,” she explained.
“When it opens, it does not simply create a path.”
Her eyes moved toward the archway.
“It asks permission.”
Ryan raised an eyebrow slightly.
“That is both fascinating and slightly unsettling.”
Kenneth gave a faint smile.
“That is magic.”
Footsteps approached from behind.
Thomas Kane-Barot and Queen Nelly arrived together, followed by Deven and Priest Mayi.
Nelly’s dark cloak flowed softly behind her as she surveyed the outpost.
“It has been years since I last came here,” she said quietly.
Thomas nodded.
“The place has not changed.”
Priest Mayi stepped toward the archway slowly, studying the runes carved into the stone.
“These markings are older than the current kingdoms,” he said thoughtfully.
“They were placed when the realms first agreed to separate their worlds.”
Ryan crossed his arms.
“A decision that becomes harder to understand with every generation.”
Kenneth glanced toward the priest.
“How long will it take to open the portal?”
Mayi considered the question.
“Not long.”
He looked toward the guards stationed near the arch.
“The outpost wardens have already begun the preparation ritual.”
Almost as if summoned by his words, a low hum began to ripple through the clearing.
The carved symbols along the stone pillars flickered faintly.
Energy stirred within the archway.
Deven stepped forward slightly.
“That would be our signal.”
The guards around the clearing moved into tighter formation.
No one spoke.
The hum grew stronger.
Lines of light slowly traced themselves along the runes carved into the pillars. One by one the ancient symbols awakened, glowing with soft golden energy.
Wind stirred through the clearing, tugging gently at cloaks and banners.
Ryan glanced toward Kenneth.
“Well.”
Kenneth gave a small nod.
“It seems our hosts are waiting.”
The glowing symbols suddenly flared brighter.
At the center of the archway, the air began to ripple like water disturbed by an unseen force.
The space between the pillars shimmered.
Then it opened.
A curtain of swirling light filled the archway, shifting with colors that did not belong to any sky of Earth.
The portal had awakened.
Even those who had crossed realms before felt the familiar chill run along their spines.
Ryan exhaled quietly.
“No matter how many times I see that…”
He shook his head.
“…it never becomes normal.”
Priest Mayi stepped forward, studying the portal carefully.
“The path is stable.”
Thomas nodded.
“Then we should not keep the Minotaurs waiting.”
Lucy stepped closer to Kenneth.
For a brief moment, the noise of the outpost faded from her awareness.
“You will be careful,” she said softly.
Kenneth met her gaze.
“I always am.”
Ryan chuckled quietly.
“That is a generous interpretation of events.”
Kenneth ignored him.
Lucy rested a hand lightly on his arm.
“Something in the world is shifting,” she said quietly.
Her eyes flickered briefly toward the portal.
“Promise me you will trust your instincts if something feels wrong.”
Kenneth nodded.
“I will.”
Behind them, another group approached the clearing.
Matthew, Lilian, and Kenneth Junior had arrived with several escorts from Council Land.
They had not been expected to come so close to the crossing.
Ryan raised an eyebrow.
“I thought the younger generation would remain behind.”
Kenneth Junior shrugged slightly.
“We wanted to see the portal open.”
Matthew and Lilian stood quietly beside him.
Their attention was not on the portal.
Instead, their gazes drifted toward the sky above the mountain pass.
Lilian spoke softly.
“Do you feel that?”
Matthew nodded.
“Yes.”
Kenneth Junior looked between them.
“Feel what?”
Before either twin could answer, Priest Mayi suddenly looked upward as well.
A faint tension had entered the air.
Not visible.
But unmistakable.
Pontionne had been right.
The barrier between realms was stirring again.
The surface of the portal flickered briefly.
Ryan noticed it immediately.
“That didn’t look stable.”
Mayi frowned slightly.
“The path remains open.”
Matthew’s voice came quietly.
“But something is watching.”
The adults exchanged uneasy glances.
Thomas stepped closer to the archway.
“We should proceed.”
Kenneth nodded.
“Yes.”
The longer they delayed, the more uncertain the crossing could become.
Ryan gave the twins one last curious look before stepping toward the portal.
“Well,” he said.
“Time to meet the Minotaurs.”
One by one, the members of the delegation moved forward.
Thomas stepped through the glowing curtain first.
Then Ryan.
Then Deven and Priest Mayi.
Kenneth paused for a final moment beside Lucy.
Their eyes met briefly.
Then he stepped forward and vanished into the light.
The portal rippled as the delegation crossed into the Minotaur Realm.
Behind them, the swirling surface slowly began to calm.
But Matthew and Lilian continued staring at the sky above the mountain pass.
Neither of them spoke.
Because the strange pressure they had felt earlier had not disappeared.
It had only grown stronger.
And somewhere beyond the barrier between worlds—
Something had begun watching the twins very closely.
