Chapter 179: The Quiet Before the Crossing

Chapter 179: The Quiet Before the Crossing
By late afternoon the council chamber had grown quieter.
The formal decision had been made. The delegation that would travel to the Minotaur Realm had been chosen. Messengers had already been dispatched to prepare a formal response to the High Warlord.
Yet no one present felt the relief that usually followed the conclusion of a difficult council meeting.
Instead, an uneasy stillness lingered within the ancient chamber.
Pontionne stood near the tall archway overlooking the open courtyard of Council Land. His hands rested behind his back as he studied the sky above.
The heavens looked calm.
Too calm.
Behind him, the rulers of the three kingdoms remained in discussion.
Kenneth Paige XII sat beside Lucy, their heads inclined toward one another as they spoke quietly.
Ryan Foster leaned against the stone table, reviewing the parchment that would soon be sent back through the mountain portal outpost.
Across the chamber, Thomas Kane-Barot stood beside Queen Nelly, the two speaking softly about the journey that awaited them.
Deven and Malcolm remained nearby, already discussing the practical details of travel and security.
The summit was no longer an abstract question.
It was becoming reality.
Pontionne’s voice broke the quiet.
“You will need to leave within two days.”
The rulers turned toward him.
Kenneth nodded slowly.
“That soon?”
Pontionne turned from the archway.
“If the Minotaurs extended their invitation immediately after the celestial manifestation, they are already expecting a response.”
Ryan exhaled quietly.
“And if we delay too long, they may assume hesitation.”
Thomas nodded.
“Or weakness.”
Lucy glanced toward Pontionne thoughtfully.
“You believe they are watching how we respond.”
Pontionne’s expression remained calm.
“I believe many eyes may now be watching the Lion Kingdoms.”
His gaze drifted briefly toward the younger members of the chamber.
Matthew and Lilian sat beside Kenneth Junior, quietly observing the preparations.
The twins had spoken little since the council finalized its decision.
But Pontionne had not forgotten the subtle disturbance he had felt earlier.
Nor the fact that the twins had sensed it first.
Ryan rolled the parchment closed.
“The delegation is clear enough,” he said.
“Kenneth, Thomas, and I will represent the kingdoms.”
Thomas nodded.
“Deven and Priest Mayi will accompany us.”
Malcolm folded his arms.
“And I will oversee security arrangements from here.”
Kenneth gave him a small smile.
“You sound disappointed.”
Malcolm shrugged slightly.
“I prefer to keep potential enemies within sight.”
Lucy looked toward him.
“You will have plenty to do here. Three kingdoms cannot be left without protection while their rulers travel.”
Malcolm nodded once.
“That is true.”
Across the chamber, Kenneth Junior finally spoke.
“Father?”
Kenneth turned toward him.
“Yes?”
The young heir stood slowly.
“Will the portal journey be dangerous?”
Ryan gave a faint chuckle.
“Every portal journey carries risk.”
Thomas added calmly,
“But the crossing itself is not what concerns us.”
Kenneth looked at his son carefully.
“The Minotaur Realm is not hostile terrain by nature,” he explained.
“But we will be guests of warriors who have fought against our people for generations.”
Kenneth Junior nodded slowly.
“I understand.”
Matthew leaned back slightly in his seat.
“The real danger is not the journey.”
All eyes shifted toward him.
“It is what waits at the end of it.”
Lilian glanced briefly toward her brother but said nothing.
Pontionne watched them both thoughtfully.
“You felt it earlier,” he said quietly.
Matthew did not pretend to misunderstand.
“Yes, Elder.”
Ryan frowned slightly.
“Felt what?”
Lilian finally spoke.
“The barrier.”
The chamber grew still again.
Lucy straightened slightly in her seat.
“You felt it move?”
Matthew nodded.
“Not move.”
He paused briefly before choosing a better word.
“React.”
Pontionne’s eyes narrowed slightly with interest.
“As if it had become aware again.”
Thomas exchanged a glance with Nelly.
Ryan looked toward Pontionne.
“You felt it as well?”
“Yes.”
The elder lion remained thoughtful.
“But only briefly.”
Priest Mayi stepped forward slowly.
“If the barrier between realms is responding to the twins’ power…”
He looked toward Matthew and Lilian carefully.
“Then the balance between worlds may be changing more quickly than we realized.”
Kenneth frowned slightly.
“You believe the two events are connected?”
Mayi inclined his head.
“The manifestation of the First Lion… the sudden interest of the Minotaurs… and now the barrier reacting again.”
He clasped his hands together.
“None of these things feel accidental.”
The chamber grew quiet again.
Lucy looked toward her children.
Matthew and Lilian met her gaze calmly.
They did not appear frightened.
If anything, they appeared thoughtful.
As if they were beginning to understand something the others had not yet grasped.
Ryan finally broke the silence.
“Well,” he said lightly, “that certainly makes the upcoming summit more interesting.”
Thomas gave a faint smile.
“Understatement of the year.”
Kenneth stood slowly.
“We will prepare for departure at dawn two days from now.”
He looked around the chamber.
“Until then, each kingdom should return briefly to their territories and ensure stability in their absence.”
Ryan nodded.
“The Northern Kingdom will be ready.”
Thomas placed a hand gently over Nelly’s.
“The Eastern Kingdom as well.”
Pontionne watched them carefully.
The rulers spoke with confidence.
But the elder lion had lived long enough to recognize when the world itself had begun shifting beneath familiar structures.
And something had unquestionably shifted.
His gaze drifted once more toward the open sky.
The heavens remained calm.
But Pontionne knew better than to trust appearances.
Because the last time the sky had appeared so peaceful—
The First Lion had appeared within it.
And somewhere beyond the boundaries of Earth, within a distant realm guarded by ancient portals, the Minotaurs were waiting.
Preparing.
Watching.
Just as the Lion Kingdoms were now preparing to step directly into their domain.
