Chapter 71: Back Again
The next morning, Amy woke up with a deep ache in her body—not just from the hangover but from everything that transpired the night before. Her mind was in turmoil. She found herself lying beside Zack, who was awake, staring at the ceiling. His face bore traces of sleeplessness and guilt.
“Amy…” Zack called her softly, startling her. His gaze was now fixed on her, his voice filled with concern. “Are you okay?”
Amy met his eyes with a deep, penetrating stare. “I should have known better, Zack. Why does it always have to be this way? Why do we always have to hide what we feel?”
Zack's expression softened. “I know… and I’m sorry. Hurting you was never my intention, Amy. But…” He hesitated, his voice faltering. “I never meant to make things worse.”
“But I am hurt,” Amy replied, her voice heavy with sadness. “I keep thinking about you—always you. And yet, it feels like I’m the one always left broken.”
Zack took her hand gently, his grip warm but firm. “I understand, Amy. I know I’ve failed you in so many ways. But I want to change that. I want to make you happy. I’ll prove to you how much I love you.”
Amy fell silent, her thoughts racing. “How can you make me happy, Zack, when you’re the one who lifts me up just to tear me back down?”
Zack’s grip on her hand tightened as he spoke with sincerity, “Amy, I want to make things right—for you, for us, for our family. I know I’ve made mistakes, but I’ll do whatever it takes to fix them.”
That evening, Zack drove Amy back to her house. He couldn’t hide his joy when he saw their twins, Aliah and Josh, running out to greet them. Amy felt a surge of warmth as she embraced her children, but questions lingered in her mind—questions she knew she had to address with Zack soon.
As the kids played, Amy and Zack sat down in the living room. Amy looked at him, her expression serious. “Zack, we need to talk about us. I can’t keep living like this. I don’t know what’s ahead for us, but I can’t keep pretending everything’s fine.”
Zack nodded, understanding the weight of her words. “I get it, Amy. I’m ready to work on this. I want to prove to you that I’m here to stay. No more lies, no more secrets.”
Amy’s lips curved into a faint smile, though her eyes still glistened with traces of sorrow. “I need time, Zack. But I’m willing to try—for the kids, and maybe… for us.”
Zack pulled her into a tight embrace, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. “Thank you, Amy. I swear I’ll make it up to you. I love you, and I’ll do everything I can to show you.”

From that night on, their lives began anew. Zack was determined to rebuild their relationship and devoted more time to Amy and the kids. Together, they visited the twins’ school, celebrated small victories, and worked on the little things that brought their family closer.
One afternoon, while Amy was tidying up, she received a message from Zack.
> "Amy, I miss you. I’ll be back next month. Please take care of yourself and the kids. I can’t wait to see you all again. I love you."
The message brought a mix of comfort and heartache. Amy wanted to trust Zack, but doubts and fears from their past lingered in her mind. She decided to call him.
“Zack, how are you?” Amy asked, her voice betraying her emotions. “Aliah and Josh are doing great. They’ve been excelling at school. I’m so proud of them. But… it’s hard without you here. I wish you could spend more time with us.”
On the other end, Zack sighed deeply. “I know, Amy. I’m sorry. Work’s been demanding, but I miss you. I miss all of you. I never wanted to be away this long.”
“I understand, Zack,” Amy replied, her voice soft yet filled with longing. “But I need you to show me that you’re really here for us—for me.”
Zack’s voice was steady and determined. “I will, Amy. I promise. I’ll make things right when I return. I love you, and I’ll prove it.”
Amy ended the call with a mix of hope and uncertainty. She knew rebuilding their trust and relationship would take time, but for their children and their shared love, she was willing to try.
As weeks passed, Amy focused on her kids, cherishing the moments they spent together. She found strength in their laughter and achievements, even as she awaited Zack’s return. Deep down, she hoped their love would prevail against the challenges ahead, bringing their family closer to the happiness they all deserved.
