Chapter 119 Unconscious
Chapter 119 Unconscious
Scarlett's POV
“No, I can't do this,” I told Christian.
I stepped backwards but the heat from the fire which burned my back made me step forward again.
Christian turned to look at me and he held my shoulder together.
“Look at me” he said and I looked at him like he had said.
“You can do it,” he said. I could only shake my head sideways because I believed I couldn't.
“I'll jump first and I'll catch you,” he said.
I swallowed because lumps won't stop forming in my throat.
Will he make it? Even if he does, he's a man and he's strong. I've always believed I am strong too, but that doesn't change the fact that I'm just a lady.
He might make it but I might not.
“Do you understand?” He shook my shoulders and I nodded.
I took a deep breath and nodded.
Christian held me by the hand and stared down at the first floor again.
“Once I land on the floor, jump into my arms” he said and I nodded.
He let go of my hand and I wished he wouldn't. I was becoming so scared at the moment.
I was suddenly starting to miss Serena and even my Mom too.
“Will you be able to climb here with your sprained ankle?” He asked.
“Yes,” I answered.
He nodded and turned away from me. He climbed the rail of the balcony and after a few seconds of hesitation, like he was getting himself ready for the jump, he jumped down the place.
I quickly moved closer to look at him and Christian landed on the floor and rolled on his back.
I knew he'd have gotten hurt like that but he stood up quickly and faced me.
“Now, Scarlett!” He yelled but suddenly, I started getting scared of the height.
The fire looked like it was escalating behind me and the thought of jumping looked like it could kill me first.
“Hurry, Scarl!” He yelled again. “That thing is going to fall soon!”
I looked up at what he was talking about and there was fire from the third floor, something burning even though I couldn't say what it was.
It was about to fall and I knew it would fall at my front or even on me any moment from now.
And if it does, it's game over for me, I'd be trapped here forever.
They won't even be able to find my body after I die.
“Trust me, Scarlett! Jump!” Christian yelled.
“I'm scared!” I yelled back at him and didn't even know if he heard because of how shaky my voice was.
“Just do it, Scarlett!” He kept urging me to jump. “I got you”
Maybe I should give it a try and just jump. It would be better than staying here and doing nothing but wait for death.
I would rather trust Christian Hartley to kill me than trust the burning fire above and behind me.
I climbed the rail even though it proved to be a little bit difficult.
Every part of my body was hot, and even sweat was getting dried off my body with the fire.
I stood on the rail and closed my eyes for a few seconds.
“Trust yourself, Scarlett. You can do this. Trust Christian, he said he got you.” I told myself.
The moment I opened my eyes, I jumped.
All I felt was my movement in the air before I landed into Christian who fell to the ground with me trapping him down after he caught me.
My eyes were closed. I knew I made it but I was still scared.
I opened my eyes slowly and looked at Christian.
He was looking at me and his breathing was hard, I could feel it because my hands were on his chest.
He sighed in relief. “You almost got me scared there, Scarlett”
“I thought you weren't going to jump,” he said. “I thought I’d lose you in the fire”
I didn't know what to say, I was still so shaken to even find a word to say.
Christian's eyes moved from me to the upper floors.
“Watch out!” He yelled and rolled us on the floor away from where we were.
Something heavy fell on the floor beside us and blisters of fire went around.
I looked and saw that it was that thing that wanted to fall from the third floor.
“We have to go” Christian said and I quickly stood up away from his chest. He stood up and held my hand.
“Let’s go” he moved me towards the entrance as we scaled through the smoke. My legs hurt and from the way Christian walked, I knew he had also gotten hurt when he jumped. Just as we were about to reach the door, it broke down.
Some people rushed in. They had helmets on and from the way they dressed, I could tell they were firefighters.
“Firefighters coming through!” They kept yelling.
How fucking early they arrived!
They went through, extinguishing the smoke first before they moved to extinguishing the fire.
Two of them stopped in front of us and it looked like they were paramedics.
“Are you hurt anywhere? Can you breathe well?” He was trying to examine me but Christian stopped him by holding a hand up.
“Don't touch her,” he said. He shoved them aside and we walked outside.
Outside, the air was calm, smoke filled the air but I could still breathe well.
Many people were still outside while many of the rich people had left.
From nowhere, someone approached me and pulled me into a hug even before Christian could stop him.
“I got so scared, Scarlett!” It was Logan.
He hugged me tightly. I tugged at his hands and he broke the hug.
He held my shoulder while he looked into my dizzy eyes.
“Scarl, your face….it's turning pale” he said.
“Logan?” I called, voice sounding like someone that had no strength. “I'm feeling sleepy”
I said and collapsed, succumbing into darkness right after.
