Chapter 112 I'll prove them wrong
Chapter 112 I'll prove them wrong
Scarlett’s POV
“What's happening here?” I squinted my gaze and that made Elish and the rest of the team turn to me.
Elish chuckled when she saw me. She moved over to me. “Here the incompetent boss comes”
She crossed her arms more tightly and tilted her head.
“It's almost 12pm and you just resume work and you say you are fit to be here?” She laughed.
“Don't cross the line, Elish” I spat at her and that made her face turn in surprise.
She wasn't expecting me to talk back, she was expecting me to stay silent and treat her like the boss like I've always tried to do.
“This is my department. It should have no business with you” I said with a stern gaze.
She smiled. “It's your department, you're right”
“But everyone heading departments agreed to evaluate how competent you are before we hire you permanently”
“You don't get to work here mainly because you are the CEO's wife,” she said, the words said in silence.
“And I’m not!” I snapped. “I got in here because of my qualifications not because of the CEO”
“Yeah, yeah” she said, nodding her head mockingly. “Even if that is true, you are still slacking off”
“You are acting like you own this place” she moved closer to me. “I had gotten here since five fucking hours ago!”
I closed my eyes and calmed myself down by taking a deep breath.
There was nothing to defend this. Do they want to know if my sister was sick and I had to quickly go to her?
I was sure someone like Elish doesn't even give a damn about an excuse like that.
“What? Wanting to make something up?” She asked, seeing me looking quite lost in thoughts.
I didn't give a response but thought about how I'd defend the situation I had found myself in.
I didn't want to bring Serena in. I didn't want to bring any personal matter into the discussion at all.
While I still stayed silent and looked defeated, cheistian’s voice rose behind me.
“She was out on a meeting with me,” he said.
Elish’s gaze turned to him and she squinted her gaze, not wanting to believe his words.
I also turned to Christian. I was surprised but decided not to show it.
“It was an urgent impromptu meeting” he said. “I couldn't reach my secretary and the available person I could reach was Mrs. Hartley”
“I had her prepare my schedule and made her attend the sudden meeting with me, is that wrong?” Christian asked.
I blinked. Meeting? Schedule? I never did all those but I knew better than to say he's not saying the truth.
He was trying to cover up for me at the moment.
Elish’s gaze darted between Christian and me. “Why then did she not say anything?” She was starting to stutter as she looked at Christian with blinking eyes.
“Because I didn't want to explain to you when it was not necessary” I said. “You weren't supposed to come here to create a ruckus”
My voice was stern, laced with venom and showing the anger I had kept in all these while.
“You should leave, Elish.” Christian said. “She isn't late to work, instead, she started today’s work even before anyone of you did”
With that, he turned. Our gazes locked and I was forced to swallow the lump in my throat, seeing the way he looked at me.
He walked away while I turned my gaze back to Elish.
“Don't think I'm incompetent. You’ve been on my neck because of that” I said calmly.
She curled her lips upward and smiled. “You think you aren't?” She laughed.
“Then let's see when you organize the weekend's office vacation,” she said. “We will know if you are competent then”
She walked away after glaring at me and her heels clicked through the floor.
I stared at her back as she exited the department. I was sure the rest of the team were also staring at her as she left.
“She's so cunning,” one of the team members whispered.
“Yes, I hate her,” another said.
We were all watching as she swayed her lips and flailed her arms as she walked.
“She likes Mr. Christian and that's why she's acting like that!” Someone said, I didn't know if it was the same person as earlier, but I didn’t turn my gaze to look.
“Yes. She crushed on him and tried to seduce him before he got married” someone else chirped in, their conversation done in whispers. “But Mr. Christian never looked her side”
“And now that he's married to someone else, she hates his wife!” they added.
And like that, Elish completely went out of sight.
I turned my gaze to the team members immediately. “Now, get back to work!” I snapped.
My voice softened. “I'm sorry you all had to go through this early in the morning”
“I had a sick sister and had to check up on her before I came back here” I said truthfully.
They murmured but from the little I heard, they didn't sound like bad people, they were only curious about the state of my sister and I heard someone say I shouldn't have tried coming to work.
I didn't know they were this nice and lovely. Now I'm realizing I've just never gotten to know them.
I moved to my office and settled down on the desk. Sophia’s daily routine was to show up in my office after I came in and today, she did that too.
She brought my schedule and placed it in front of me. “I looked through and saw that the day wouldn't be busy.
The other departments had refused to let their projects go through us for management before they sent it to the next department which will work on it.
“We should start preparing for the weekend vacation” I twirled my chair and smirked.
Elish wants to know if I'm capable and I'll do my best to show her that I was more than capable.
