Chapter 14~ Valerie's POV
\===========
A few hours after the doctor addressed us on my mother's health, I felt unsettled as I began walking back and forth, and Dante sat on the chair staring at me with concern in his eyes.
To be frank, this side of him surprised me, as I had never expected him to be this supportive, but still, I will never show how much I am impressed by it.
Not too long, as I thought to myself, the Doctor came out of the operating room once again. And this time, I kept calm on my composure, allowing him to come close to where we were.
"Please, doctor, how's my mother now?"I inquired as he got to where I stood.
"We tried everything we could, but she is slow in her response, which would make the recovery take some time, so she has to stay in the hospital for at least a month," the doctor explained.
"One month, doctor!" I interjected.
"Is there any other way to enable her to receive her treatment at home, for a better rest, because my mother hates hospitals?" I asked.
"There is a way, actually, which means you would have to hire a nurse for her," the doctor replied.
Taking a deep breath, I said, explaining to him, "Is there a way to help me cut costs because I am not financially capable of such expanded expenses?"
My words made him laugh a bit as he uttered, "Mr. Dante paid all the bills before you brought your mother here, and don't be frightened, the payments still cover the nurse's payment if that's what you want."
Surprise crept over me as I was short of words, but I eventually found my voice.
Facing Dante, I questioned, as I stammered, "Dan-Dan-Dante, why didn't you tell me you paid my mother's bills before we got here, and also, did you call this hospital before we arrived?"
"I only wanted to help, and the way you sounded on the phone made me call the hospital in case anything extremely serious happened," Dante responded.
"I'm not requesting a favor from you, Mr blaze, what are you trying to prove?" I snapped out in anger.
"And hold on to my words, I will return everything I owe you," I bellowed.
Then I returned my gaze to the doctor, as I continued, "Doctor, what ward number will my mother be situated in?"
"We would move her to a private ward to erase any form of disturbance reaching her room," He said.
Then the doctor said, "I will take my leave now."
"Thank you, doctor, I appreciate it," I thanked and so he walked away from us.
Sitting quietly, I was buried in mixed emotions as I felt grateful for my mother not dying, but also furious as Dante flaunted his wealth in my face. I couldn't even take it anymore.
So I said, "I am grateful to you for all you did and your response to my sudden call, despite that you were busy."
"It's okay, Miss Skye, I felt I needed to be there for you, that was why I came running when I heard your voice," he responded.
Then I continued, as the intention to state my mind to him heavied on me, "Please, can you take your leave now?"
Instantly, he looked at me in the eyes as he was shocked by my utterance.
"Are you serious right now?" He quipped.
"Yes, I am," I answered with a straight face.
"Is this what I get for being so responsive to your sudden call and nice to you?" Dante rambled.
"Please, Dante, I don't want to argue with you, just leave, and I promise to pay back every dollar you spent on my mother's treatment," I stated with both of my hands clapped together.
"Okay, I will leave, but I want you to know this, I did it for humanity, not for you to pay me back," He uttered as he stood on his feet.
Rolling my eyes at him, I spoke out, "I don't care what motives you have for this favor you rendered, but all I know is I don't want any favor from a man who doesn't know how to respect a woman."
Smirking, he remarked, "Now I don't know how to respect a woman, but calling me for help didn't take you too much of your thoughts and ego."
Sneering, he said, "I will take my leave now," and with that, he turned and left the hospital.
Instantly, he left. I sat on the seat close to the end of the waiting area, and then, my conscience began eating me up.
I murmured silently in guilt as I reprimanded myself, "Valerie, you acted like an ingrate, and now he is gone. How would I apologize for my attitude towards him?"
While still feeling dejected, suddenly I saw my mother lying unconscious on an equipped bed as she was being taken to her new ward.
I tried running in the direction they took her, but I was unable to get there on time. Still, I didn't give up as I continued with my steps, and eventually I got to the ward they took her into.
I tried entering, but it was off-limits for visits till the next three hours, so I stood at the transparent glass outside the room, which enabled me to see her as she rested in solace.
At that moment, I wished I could hug her tightly and apologize to her for leaving her at home alone without getting someone to watch over her.
I felt so guilty of myself for putting her through this bedridden phase once again, after the last accident she had that resulted in her being unable to walk again. I just hope there are things I could do to make my wrong decisions right.
All this I thought to myself as I stood there watching her from outside, as time took its length in making the day close itself up for the night to take over its place.
