Maya
I have been a little anxious this morning because I was at Conrad’s place alone. I didn’t know what to do with myself. I was also worried that someone would come by when he wasn’t here looking for him. I wouldn’t answer the door, but I don’t know if any of his family and friends have keys. No one needs to find me here.
Conrad told me to make myself at home which I haven’t. All I have done is make a coffee for myself. I don’t want to touch anything in case I break it. Everything in here looks so expensive. I wouldn’t ever forgive myself if I broke something. Lucky had brought some books with me to entertain myself. Conrad said he would be back for about one, so I only had a couple of hours left to pass since I didn’t get out of bed until ten. I fell back asleep after Conrad left for work. I didn’t mean to, but I was exhausted. I just hope when I return to work tomorrow, Meredith isn’t on my case for being off sick today. I can worry about that tomorrow. I didn’t want to take the day off when Conrad suggested it, but I am glad I agreed because I needed it after everything that has been happening.
I find my page in my book and happily start to read. I only manage a couple of pages before my cell starts to ring. It can only really be two people; Conrad or work. I glanced down and saw a local number calling, but it wasn’t stored in my contacts. I have no idea who it could be. I don’t tend to answer unknown numbers, but I pick it up and answer it.
“Hello,” I say softly.
“Did you miss me, baby girl?”
The voice on the other end made me freeze. No, it can’t be. How did he get my number?
“Sorry, who is this?” I ask, refusing to believe it is my ex when I know it is.
“Don’t pretend like you don’t know who it is. I bet you thought you had gotten rid of, uh?”
The tone in his voice makes me shudder, and not in a good way.
“What do you want, Callum?” I snap.
I am terrified right now, but I don’t want him to know that.
“I miss you. I know you miss me too. I think it is time you come home. You have been gone too long. I promise things will be different.” He says sweetly.
I have heard that before, but I am not falling for it this time.
“No, things won’t be different. I am never coming back to you. Leave me alone.” I hiss.
He laughs loudly on the other end, such an evil laugh, “Yes, you will. You always do.”
“No, I fucking won’t. Now, leave me the hell alone. If you contact me again, I will call the police.” I yell.
I hang up the call. My hands were shaking, and my heart was pounding in my chest. I don’t understand how he has my number. I changed it, and no one has it. A text comes through from the same number.
You are going to regret hanging up on me, Maya. Watch yourself.
I whimper as I read his threat. Fear taking over. I quickly block the number before he sends me anything else. I toss my cell aside, pull my knees to my chest and hug them. If he can’t find my number, what else can he find? The thoughts in my head are quick to spiral out of control. I close my eyes and concentrate on my breathing. I have cried enough tears over that bastard; he doesn’t deserve any more.
I am glad Conrad’s building is secure, and he wouldn’t be able to get in. He probably doesn’t know where Conrad stays, but I feel safer knowing I am secure in here. I stand from the sofa and start to pace the living room. I go over to the window and look outside, double-checking he isn’t out there. There is no sign of him. I quickly walk away from the window.
I don’t know what to do now because I won’t be able to focus. I head back to Conrad’s bedroom and climb back into bed, burying myself under the covers. Sleep will be a good way to take my mind off things. As much as I try to fight them, the tears flow down my cheeks. I let them fall, but only for a minute and wipe them away.
I sigh, close my eyes and hope for sleep to take over. I need to get out of my head.
****
The feel of warm kisses on my forehead brings me out of my sleep. I open my eyes to see Conrad sitting on the bed next to me.
“Hey, beautiful.” He says softly and strokes my cheek.
“Hi,” I whisper and slowly sit up.
He looks at me, “Have you been crying?” he asks concerned.
I nod, “My ex found my number and called. If you grab my cell from the living room, you will see the text he sent after I hung up on him.” I whimper.
I watch anger flash in his eyes, “He called you?”
I nodded. His jaw clenched, and he went through to get my cell.
“I will fucking find him and kill him.” He hisses as he reads the text.
I jump a little at his anger. When he notices, his face softens, and he comes over to sit back on the bed with me. He takes my hand in his.
“Sorry, angel, I didn’t mean to scare you.” He says softly.
“No, it’s okay, but please, just leave it, okay? I don’t want you getting hurt.” I beg.
“Maya, I won’t get hurt. I can’t do nothing.” He sighs.
“Yes, you can. He will get bored and disappear.”
“I know you want to believe that, but I can see on your face you know that isn’t what is going to happen.” He whispers.
“You are right, but please be careful.” I plead and climb into his lap.
He wrapped his arms tightly around me and hugged me to his chest, “I will be. I promise that you have nothing to worry about. He won’t get near you. I will hire security for you if I need to.” He says and strokes my hair.
“I don’t think I need that,” I reply.
“Remember, it is an option, okay?”
I nod against his chest. He holds me tightly and lies on his face, pulling me over him and hugging me close again.
“I still don’t know how he managed to get my number. I worry he will find my address too, or yours.” I whisper.
“Yes, I don’t understand how he got it either. Even if he does find my place, it won’t matter; he can’t get in. You will be staying here with me until we know he is gone or arrested.”
“It could take months, Conrad.” I sigh.
“It doesn’t matter. You will stay here with me for as long as needed.” He replies and kisses the top of my head.
“Okay.”
I could try arguing with him, but I know it won’t matter. He isn’t going anywhere, and he will be around to protect. If I didn’t stay here with him, he would just come to mine and stay.
